Societe Jersiaise study sheds light on Jersey's maerl habitats

A new report will raise awareness of Jersey's "unique and relatively unseen" maerl habitats, a study group has Jersiaise said maerl was a type of slow-growing, calcified red seaweed that forms complex seabed structures, providing vital habitat for a wide range of marine life. It said the project, supported by a grant from the Jersey Community Foundation with funds from the Channel Islands lottery, would "shed light" on the marine J Bailhache, the society's CEO, said members were "delighted" to help support projects which were considered of benefit to the island. The project is managed by the society in partnership with the Government of Jersey's environment Jersiaise said the final publication was designed to raise awareness and appreciation of the "extraordinary habitat". "By identifying key knowledge gaps, it will help guide future research, monitoring, and conservation efforts," it said."The project highlights the value of collaboration between scientific, governmental and community organisations in advancing marine conservation and ensuring Jersey's natural heritage is better understood and protected."

Two students win awards for natural history work

Two students studying for doctorates have been awarded grants for their natural history work. Societe Jersiaise has given the Nigel Queree Environment Award for 2025 to Joshua Smith for his project assessing grazing practices. The study group gave the Roderick Dobson Award to Rees Monet for his work aimed at improving the protection of coastal sharks and skates in the Channel Islands. The group said Nigel Queree had been one of Jersey's most prominent environmentalists and Roderick Dobson one of the island's most distinguished field naturalists. Mr Smith is a PhD student at the Jersey International Centre for Advanced Studies. His project, 'Mow vs Moo', is aimed at comparing the success of different options of grass management in terms of biodiversity and carbon stocks. University of Exeter PhD student Mr Monet is tracking key species in his study, including the critically endangered Tope shark and three commercially important skate species. Societe Jersiaise said it continues to welcome applications for grants which are detailed on its website. South African plant removed from strip of land thanks to grant

A grant has been awarded to a Jersey group to remove a South African plant from part of the island. Societe Jersiaise said it had received £3,000 to remove purple dewplant, also called disphyma crassifolium, after it was found at St Ouen's Bay. The group said the plant probably found its way to the island via the "feet of a bird"."On the sandy foreshore of the bay it has become a threat to the native flora because it spreads exponentially on the dunes where it has no natural predators," Societe Jersiaise said. It added: "This plant creates mats of foliage which swamp native flora. It has little wildlife benefit because few local invertebrates and pollinators utilize the dewplant."With the funding from the Roy Overland Trust, the plant has been removed from a strip of land on the Jersiaise added: "Nurture Ecology was given the contract to hand pick, collect and remove from the site this noxious alien plant."
