Kasmarcik Family continues Donoli's legacy

APALACHIN, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A Conklin family is continuing the legacy of a popular restaurant that has been enjoyed by many generations. Amber and Kris Kasmarcik purchased Donoli's Restaurant and Banquets from original founders Scott and Linda Fargnoli in March. The family Italian steakhouse is known for its prime rib, large banquet hall, and welcoming atmosphere. Under the new ownership, Amber says guests can expect the same great experience, plus some changes to the menu and wine list. The Kasmarcik's are no strangers to the restaurant business. Amber has a wealth of experience working in local eateries, and Kris serves as a co-owner of Stadium 138. Amber says Donoli's is a great place to celebrate milestones such as anniversaries and birthdays. 'It's a homey atmosphere. It's just a family restaurant. It's good food. It's a great place. It feels like home when I'm here,' said Amber. Amber says they plan to continue hosting the annual golf tournament, which is in its 36th year, as well as new events such as a car show for Father's Day. Donoli's is open Monday through Friday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 9. You can order takeout through its website, or by calling (607)625-3707. Donoli's is located at 6510 Route 434 in Apalachin. June 2 recognized as Sock Out Cancer Day in New York

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A charity, known for its brightly colored socks, is being celebrated across the state as it prepares for a couple of major fundraisers. Sock Out Cancer held a news conference on Friday, announcing this Sunday as Sock Out Cancer Day in New York. The organization was founded to support cancer patients with funds to cover non-medical expenses while they are battling the disease. It raises money through the sale of rainbow-colored socks, with each color representing a different type of cancer, as well as significant fundraising events throughout the year. The money is then given to the foundations of UHS, Lourdes, and Golisano Children's Hospital for distribution to their patients in need. Chairman of the Board at Security Mutual Life Insurance, Bruce Boyea, says that the effort has had a lasting impact. 'The stories that I've heard bring tears to your eyes, really. Of people who have to work, and everybody has to work, but sometimes they work to get the money, they put off the treatment which is about the worst thing that you can do for cancer. And that's why we created Sock Out Cancer,' said Boyea. The charity announced its annual concert and partnership with the Dick's Open. The Beatles vs. The Rolling Stones tribute bands battle will take place on Saturday, October 18, with all ticket sales going to the organization. And it's bringing back Birdies for Cancer, where donors can pledge for every birdie made at the Dick's Open golf tournament with Security Mutual providing an additional 10 percent match. Rod Serling Day celebrates the life of Binghamton's favorite son

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Fifth graders from all seven Binghamton elementary schools celebrated the legacy of the city's favorite son on Friday. Rod Serling Day had a different format this year, being held at Horace Mann Elementary because of its proximity to Rec Park. As in previous years, Serling's daughter Anne was the guest of honor, and she recounted to the children her memories of her famous father, especially focusing on his sense of humor. Leading up to the day, the fifth graders learned about classic Twilight Zone episodes and their underlying messages supporting compassion and tolerance. 'I feel that this is and my father would have felt that this is one of his greatest accolades, that fifth grade students are learning about the messages of the Twilight Zone, which I feel we need now more than ever. I'm so honored, as my Dad would have been, that these teachers do such a tremendous job and these kids are so great,' said Anne. After the assembly inside the school, the children went to Rec Park to participate in a variety of stations. They learned about the new bronze statue of Serling that was installed last year, Binghamton High School students did a staged reading of one of his famous Twilight Zone episodes, and the kids got to ride the same carousel that Serling once did. The day ended with a picnic lunch.
