Saeed proud of weightlifter Sybil Sohail's gold medal
Farhan Saeed, former frontman of the renowned Pakistani band Jal and now a singer-songwriter and actor, took to Instagram to publicly express his pride after Sybil Sohail became the first Pakistani woman to win the gold medal at the Asian Weightlifting Masters Championship in Doha, Qatar. In a simple Instagram Story, Saeed tagged Sohail herself and wrote, "Proud moment. Congratulations." Adding a Pakistani flag emoji at the end of his short but sweet message to lock in his national pride, Saeed's simple message captured the essence of the country's joy and pride in Sohail's achievement. This was not the first time Saeed has used his social media platform to highlight Pakistani sporting excellence. When javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem clinched gold at the Asian Athletics Championship by defeating a strong Indian contender in the men's javelin final in May, Saeed took to Instagram Story to extend his congratulations on the historic victory. Sohail, 31, competed in the 59kg weight category in Doha. She lifted a total of 95kg — 40kg in the snatch and 55kg in the clean and jerk — to secure her place at the top of the podium. This gold medal marked not only her debut in international weightlifting but also a significant milestone for Pakistani women in strength sports. Previously a decorated powerlifter, Sohail holds titles such as Commonwealth Powerlifting Champion and Asian Commonwealth Powerlifting Champion. Transitioning to weightlifting, she set out with a clear ambition: to raise Pakistan's flag at major Asian events. "I aim to make my country proud, make my family proud. We have sacrificed a lot for the sport, but I need to make sure that all of that effort and dedication pays off," Sohail told The Express Tribune in Doha.

Eid-ul-Adha 2025: trade peaks at Asia's largest cattle market in Karachi
As Eid-ul-Adha nears in Pakistan, trading activity is reaching its peak at the Asia's largest cattle market, sprawling across 1,200 acres along Karachi's Northern Bypass. Muslims around the celebrate Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Festival of Sacrifice, every year in the last Islamic month. This year, the first day of Eid-ul-Adha will fall on Saturday, June 7 in Pakistan. Shahab Ali Ikram, Administrator of the Northern Bypass Cattle Market, told Business Recorder that around 250,000 animals had arrived at the market, and the number was expected to hit 300,000 by the second day of Eid. As per an estimate, the Northern Bypass market alone is expected to record over Rs38 billion worth of business this year. When asked about inflation and people's purchasing power, the administrator explained that the cattle market operates on bargaining. 'Since the market operates on bargaining, it is difficult to set a minimum price. However, regarding the highest price, a trader named Saleem Chacha sold a pair of animals for Rs17.5 million (Rs1.75 crore), which so far is the largest deal in the market,' he said. Ikram also stated that gate pass fees had been reduced in 2025 for public convenience. The gate pass for cars was brought down from Rs6,500 to Rs3,250 per car, while the pass for motorcycles was reduced from Rs3,000 to Rs1,500 per motorcycle. 'Additionally, ATM machines from various banks have been installed inside the market for the public's ease,' he said. The administrator further informed that the cattle market had been divided into 12 blocks, including Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Sibi blocks. Bilal Shah, who bought a cattle from the Norther Bypass market, said a free of cost gate pass was required this year to exit the market after buying an animal. 'This addition this year has helped both the buyers and sellers,' he said. Khawaja Usman Sohail, a regular visitor to the Northern Bypass market, shared his experience that animals in the market were being sold in the price range of Rs80,000 to Rs125,000 per maund (approximately 40kg). 'Facilities in the market have improved significantly this year, ranging from cashless banking to food streets,' he said. Regarding gate passes, Sohail mentioned that a Google Form was available to acquire the gate pass, and he appreciated the fee reduction, saying such steps would enhance the vibrancy of the cattle market. Sohail noted that people were also buying sacrificial animals from different other small markets and cattle farms scattered across the city, for the main cattle market, located in the Northern Bypass, was far from many areas of Karachi. Various small and large markets have been set up in parts of the city, including Malir, Bhains colony, Lyari, Mawach Goth, Yusuf Goth, Orangi Town, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, New Karachi, and many others. It maybe noted that Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi had issued a notification banning illegal cattle markets and the sale of animals on roadsides. The city administration would take strict measures to organise market activities and ensure compliance with municipal regulations, he had said. 'It is now becoming a growing trend that people prefer buying sacrificial animals from other available options as they don't see a big price difference between the main market at the Northern Bypass and other smaller markets,' he said. 'Though the Asia's biggest market hasn't lost its significance as yet, this trend can have its impact in the coming years.'

Sikkim announces ban on tourist vehicles heading for northern areas
Gangtok, May 31 (UNI) The Sikkim government on Saturday imposed a ban on tourist vehicles from plying to entire north Sikkim owing to blockage of roads following a series of landslides triggered by heavy rains, which has also caused swelling of the Teesta and impacted the rescue operation to trace the missing people after their vehicle rolled down into the river on Thursday night. "I am directed to inform all tour operators that permits for north Sikkim will not be issued on Saturday due to incessant rains on Friday night, which has blocked a road leading to Chungthang," read a government notice on Saturday. "Advance permits issued for north Sikkim for May 31 may be treated as cancelled, " the notice said. The main artery leading to south Sikkim was also blocked at 7th Mile between Legship and Kewzing in Namchi due to an accident, in which a pickup oil tanker lost control and overturned, obstructing the passage. There were no injuries, the report said. Another communication warned that the dangerous water flow in North Sikkim's Phodong village after heavy rains on Friday last night has led to a rise in the water level of the Teesta river belt. All tourist permits remain canceled due to a landslide on the Chungthang side in the north district. The district magistrate of north district informed the people not to panic following swelling or Teesta and stay alert. " The authorities will continue to provide timely updates as the situation evolves," the district magistrate said. "It's a red warning ('take action') for the Mangan district. It will impact the stretch under Gangtok district from Dikchu to Singtam. A flood-like situation could emerge in the northern region, which is surrounded by icy hills along the China border," said the DM. The swelling of the Teesa hugely affected the search and rescue operation of a vehicle, which plunged into Teesta with 11 people on board on Thursday night near Chungthang. The rescuers retrieved a body and evacuated two wounded. The remaining 8 persons were still untraced. A woman BJP leader from Odisha, identified as Itishree Nayak and her elder son Sohail are yet to be traced, an unconfirmed report said. Tourists from Odisha and West Bengal jointly hired a Sikkim-registered car and headed to Lachung. Their four-wheeler skidded off the road and rolled down some 1,000 feet into the Teesta. UNI PC PRS
