Full sleeves to cover tattoos, protruding nose helped police nab snatcher
A 24-year-old petty criminal who wore full sleeves to hide his tattooed arms and whose distinctive nose protruded from under his helmet — that's how a Delhi Police team remembered Sohan Rawat, the man arrested on Wednesday for allegedly snatching MP R Sudha's gold chain in Chanakyapuri two days earlier. A CCTV grab of the alleged snatcher. (HT Photo) It was these details that helped the same police team — which had arrested him in a similar case last year — identify and nab him again, senior officers said. Rawat, a resident of Harkesh Nagar in Okhla Industrial Area, also goes by at least two aliases — Sonu and Buggu — and frequently changed addresses to avoid being declared a proclaimed offender in any particular area, police said. A Class 8 dropout, Rawat left his wife and young son about a year ago. According to police, Rawat has 26 prior criminal involvements, mostly reported in south Delhi. Six recent theft and robbery cases have been solved following his latest arrest. He was last taken into custody on April 16 for allegedly stealing a motorcycle and released on bail on June 27. On July 17, he allegedly stole a scooter from Pul Prahladpur, which he used in Monday's chain-snatching incident in Chanakyapuri. The breakthrough came when the same team — led by Inspector Umesh Yadav — that had arrested him in July last year for snatching a woman's gold chain in Defence Colony reviewed CCTV footage. Teams from the New Delhi and South West districts traced a helmeted man riding a metallic grey stolen scooter from Ashram Chowk to Dhaula Kuan before he entered Chanakyapuri. 'More footage revealed he had started in Okhla, crossed Govindpuri and Kalkaji, joined Ring Road, turned onto Mathura Road, passed Ashram Chowk, and then proceeded to Dhaula Kuan and Chanakyapuri. He used the same route to escape,' an officer familiar with the investigation said. The team recognised Rawat by his signature appearance. 'He always wore full sleeves to cover two tattoos — a Shiva tattoo and the letters 'SN'. His nose shape also matched that of the man we arrested in July,' the officer added. After establishing his identity, the team approached Rawat's estranged wife in Dakshinpuri. Though she said they had separated, she shared the contact details of a close friend. The friend was questioned and provided an active mobile number for Rawat. The number was traced, and he was picked up early Wednesday morning near the BRT corridor. Police said Rawat works alone and has no known affiliation with any gang.

Chanakyapuri ka chor: How chain-snatcher's jail-bail-repeat career came to an end when he targeted an MP
But that was the end of his self admiration, because very soon, television channels were flashing the face of his victim, and he realised this time he had gone too far. Just out on bail a week ago for an earlier crime, he did not want to go back to prison after just a week of freedom. On the prowl in his usual haunt, Chanakyapuri's Diplomatic Enclave, the 24-year-old was cruising on his Scooty, looking for unsuspecting prey. He cruised by first-time MP representing Mayiladuthurai constituency, allegedly snatched the gold chain from her neck and rode off, patting himself on the back for his finesse. New Delhi: It was business as usual for Sohan Rawat on the morning of 4 August. The business of chain-snatching, that is. Only, the victim wasn't usual. It was Tamil Nadu Congress MP R. Sudha. But his victim, who was also injured slightly in the chain snatching, wasn't taking the incident lightly. She wrote to Home Minister Amit Shah, narrating her ordeal in the heavily guarded Chanakyapuri. Sure enough, with several Delhi Police teams on the hunt, Sohan was arrested from Harkesh Nagar in Delhi's Okhla Industrial Area on Wednesday. Also read: Crime stories dominated Indian TV news headlines—murder, suicide to execution How the case was cracked Sources say, the Delhi Police looked through footage from about a hundred CCTV cameras, and traced Sohan's blue Scooty from MotiBagh to the Chanakyapuri area. The police spoke to locals, showed them the footage, and identified Sohan. 'These efforts led to the identification and arrest of the accused, who was using a stolen Suzuki Access Scooty to commit the crime,' a senior police officer said. According to the police, Sohan is a habitual offender and has cases lodged against him across various police stations in Delhi. Previous cases against him include theft, snatching and motor vehicle theft. There are cases even under sections of the Arms Act across the jurisdictions of Amar Colony, Sunlight Colony, R.K. Puram, Lajpat Nagar, Inder Puri, Kalkaji, Hauz Khas, Mandawali, Fatehpur Beri, Defence Colony, Ambedkar Nagar, Naraina and Saket, among others. The MP's gold chain has been recovered from Sohan. Additionally, the stolen Scooty used in the crime has also been seized along with four mobile phones, suspected to have been snatched or stolen. 'The accused is currently under further interrogation for ascertaining his involvement in other recent incidents of snatching and vehicle theft,' the officer said. Delhi Police nab man who snatched Lok Sabha MP's chain, recover jewellery and scooter
The Delhi Police, early on Wednesday, arrested a man who had allegedly snatched the gold chain of Lok Sabha MP R Sudha during her morning walk on the streets of the high-security Chanakyapuri area of Lutyens' Delhi two days ago. According to the police, the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of the Delhi Police nabbed the accused, identified as Sohan Rawat, from near his house in the Okhla area of South East Delhi. The police said Rawat has 26 criminal cases previously registered in his name, and was released from jail on July 27. 'The stolen scooter that he used for the crime, the MP's gold chain weighing 30.90 grams, four mobile phones suspected to be stolen, and the suspect's clothes at the time of the incident have been recovered,' said a police officer. CCTV footage revealed that the accused was wearing a colourful full-sleeve T-shirt and a helmet, and riding a black scooter at a very high speed, before and after he targeted the MP. He was later seen fleeing towards South Delhi's Moti Bagh area. The Delhi Police had mobilised 24 teams from various units, including the New Delhi district police, Crime Branch, Special Cell, and Special Staff, to nab the accused, the officer added. In the past two days, the Delhi Police scanned over 1,500 CCTV cameras, including 900 installed around embassies and in the vicinity of the incident, and questioned over 200 people, with a focus on those with prior criminal records, as well as snatchers recently released from jail or out on bail, said a source. They also conducted searches in more than 25 localities in Chanakyapuri, Sarojini Nagar, and R K Puram. Sudha reported that her gold chain was allegedly snatched near the Polish embassy early on Monday. The Tamil Nadu Congress MP later wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying the incident was shocking, highlighting that the area is considered a 'high-security zone'. The MP alleged that she suffered injuries to her neck and that her clothes were torn during the incident.
