Two Covid patients die due to comorbidities in Ahmedabad: AMC
Two Covid positive women, aged 18 and 47, who were admitted to LG hospital have reportedly died due to comorbidities in Ahmedabad's Maninagar area, confirmed the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials. The deaths took place within the past week at the hospital even as the Gujarat government on Monday evening in its daily Covid bulletin shared no information about the deceased persons. Sharing details, AMC Medical Officer of Health (MoH), Dr Bhavin Solanki said, 'Two Covid positive patients were admitted to LG hospital. One patient was a 47-year-old woman from Danilimda, who was suffering from hypertension, while the other was an 18-year-old recent mother who had severe cardiac problems. Both passed away due to comorbidities.' The Indian Express has learnt that the middle-aged woman, who was admitted to the hospital on May 23 with hypertension suffered from septiscemia (blood poisoning), following which her health deteriorated rapidly, leading to further complications and subsequent death on May 28. Meanwhile, doctors said that the 18-year-old woman had delivered a baby just a week before being admitted to the hospital on May 30. She is said to have developed cardiomyopathy and died on June 2, according to sources. As of now, about 40-50 new Covid cases are being reported in Ahmedabad city per day, according to sources. On June 3, till the filing of this report, the city had recorded 241 active Covid cases, said Dr Solanki but warned against panic, stating that 'vulnerable members of the population such as the elderly, people with comorbidities, children and pregnant women need to observe caution and report to a hospital if they have sustained fever or other symptoms for more than 2-3 days'. Currently, most patients are in home isolation while only a few patients have been admitted to civic-body run hospitals, according to sources. Serious patients are being admitted to LG Hospital, Shardaben Hospital and SVP Hospital, said the sources. Notably, doctors at GMERS Sola Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad were a worried lot on Tuesday after the 20-year-old Covid patient who delivered a preterm baby in the seventh month of her pregnancy and was still on oxygen support, suddenly left the hospital with her child, taking Discharge Against Medical Advice (DAMA), according to souces. The woman's child had been tested positive for Covid three days after he was born on May 30 and was also in treatment along with his mother. Till Monday evening, the state reported 95 new Covid cases, taking the tally to 433 cases, according to the Health Department. Of the total cases, 397 are active cases, out of which 22 patients have been admitted to hospital while 375 were in home isolation. At least 36 patients have been discharged so far, according to the department.

Court: Property buyers can't be added as accused in investment fraud case
Mumbai: A special MPID court recently ruled against adding as accused two persons who purchased a property for Rs 2.6 crore from two accused in an investment fraud case involving Cosmo Investment and Athena Investment. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The court held that those whose involvement is not direct in managing the fraudulent financial establishments cannot be added as accused. "Even if the submission that respondent numbers 10 and 11 (purchasers) acted as agents of respondent numbers 1-7 (accused), they cannot be added as accused. Respondent numbers 10 and 11 are not directors of the firms. They are not persons responsible for the business or management of the business. The role of respondent numbers 10 and 11 is only that they paid Rs 2.60 crore out of the consideration amount to 34 investors on the instruction of respondent numbers 1 and 3. Thus, even if they are considered as agents, they cannot be added as accused," Judge N G Shukla said. The plea was filed by one of the investors, Arvind Solanki (67), against the existing accused in the fraud case—Juhu residents Amit Masalia, Prakash Masalia, Dina Masalia, Payal Masalia and Mayank Doshi, Cosmo Investment and Athena Investment, as well as the property purchasers Jitendra Shah and Kirti Shah. Solanki claimed the transaction was fraudulent. Amit, Prakash, Dina, Payal and Doshi were involved in the two firms. They are accused of defrauding 42 investors by failing to return substantial investments along with promised lumpsum benefits and interest. The victims invested around Rs 22.37 crore. A case under the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (in Financial Establishments) Act was filed in 2018. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Names of 15 depositors and their investments were revealed after the chargesheet was filed. During their anticipatory bail proceedings, the accused returned the invested amount to the original complainant and her relatives, leading to the grant of their bail. At that time, a property previously attached by the investigating officer was also released. This property is an office space in Andheri West. Shortly after, Amit and Prakash sold it for Rs 2.75 crore. After an initial payment of Rs 15 lakh, the remaining Rs 2.6 crore was paid directly to 34 investors, victims of the fraud. The advocate representing Solanki argued this property sale was a "mala fide transfer" aimed at circumventing asset attachment under the Act. It was contended the Shahs acted as agents for the original accused and committed fraud by selectively repaying certain investors, some of whom were not named in the original chargesheet. However, advocates representing the Shahs argued they legitimately purchased the property and fulfilled their payment obligations by settling debts with investors as instructed by original sellers.

Ghagra, gasoline & guilt: Gujarat woman 'fakes death' using murder victim's body, inspired by film plot
Representative Image NEW DELHI: A woman in Gujarat's Patan district allegedly killed a man with the help of her lover, dressed the corpse in her clothes, and set it on fire in a bid to fake her own death, police said on Wednesday, according to news agency PTI. The charred body was discovered near a pond on the outskirts of Jakhotra village in Santalpur taluka late Tuesday night. Initially mistaken for 22-year-old Geeta Ahir, the body was later identified as that of 56-year-old Harjibhai Solanki, a nomadic resident of nearby Vauva village. Geeta and her 21-year-old partner Bharat Ahir were arrested early Wednesday from Palanpur railway station, where they were allegedly waiting to board a train to Rajasthan. "Geeta, who lives with her husband in Jakhotra, devised the plan after watching the film 'Drishyam'," said Patan Superintendent of Police V K Nayi. "She convinced her lover to help her find a dead body so they could fake her death and flee together." According to police, Geeta left home on Tuesday night while her family was asleep. When her husband and other relatives began searching for her, they found a half-burnt body lying near a pond on the outskirts of the village. ' Since Geeta's ghagra (long traditional skirt) and her anklets were found on the body, her kin initially thought that it was Geeta's body. However, after bringing the body home, they found that the deceased was a man,' Nayi said. Police launched a murder investigation and identified the deceased as Solanki. "Bharat spotted Solanki on May 26 and offered him a lift. He then strangled him at a secluded location and transported the body to the pond area," said Nayi. Geeta allegedly met Bharat at the site with petrol. The couple dressed Solanki in her clothes and set the body alight before heading to Palanpur station. 'They admitted to the crime during interrogation,' the official said. Both suspects remain in custody as the investigation continues.
