Singer Jahiem charged with animal cruelty for the second time in 4 years

R&B singer Jaheim was charged with six counts of animal cruelty and booked into a Georgia jail earlier this month, according to Fulton County Police Department records. Fulton County Animal Control Officers first responded to a call on April 27 about a large, copper-red dog roaming through a shopping mall parking lot looking malnourished, according to the arrest affidavit. Officers found the dog tied up to the back of an RV and left unattended. An unknown male approached officers in an aggressive manner saying, "We not taking the dog," and explained he was outside doing work on the RV, the affidavit states. Animal control left without any further incident. The following day, police accompanied animal control workers to the site, where they encountered the man. He became "irate" and initially refused to identify himself, according to the affidavit; then he stated he was the singer Jaheim, whose legal name is Jaheim Hoagland, the court papers say. Jaheim took the dog out of the kennel for officers to see, and the animal appeared "severely emaciated and his rib cage was protruding through the skin," the affidavit stated. The singer was given a written warning and the officers said they would return to obtain the dog's veterinarian records and do a reassessment. On April 29, animal control received an additional complaint about another of Jaheim's dogs that looked emaciated, the affidavit read. The singer allegedly moved his RV to different locations in the Atlanta area until a search warrant was executed and he was found on May 1. The "Just in Case" singer from Tucker, Georgia, was arrested that day and released on May 2 after posting a $35,000 bond, records show. Six of his dogs found in the RV — named Tweet, Tip, Taka, Tink, Timber and Tanger — were found to not have "adequate food, water, sanitary conditions and ventilation," court documents stated. There were four American pit bull terriers, one French bulldog and one hound type mixed breed found. Three of the dogs were puppies, according to the court records. The puppies were found in kennels with urine and feces covering the floor in an RV with no air circulating, according to the affidavit. They had overgrown nails and some had feces on their paws. The Frenchie canine was found missing patches of hair from its rear end, the affidavit stated. Jaheim is scheduled to appear in court on June 2. It is not clear if the 47-year-old singer has an attorney. Jaheim was previously charged with third-degree animal cruelty in 2021 after officials found multiple emaciated dogs at his New Jersey home, including one that was in such poor condition that it had to be euthanized. Officers found six dogs in crates in separate animal crates in Jaheim's driveway and an additional nine dogs in "in varying stages of emaciation," according to a September 2021 press release from the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office. Suspect cuts plea deal in cold case killing of NJ woman in 1997

A Canadian man accused in the cold case killing of a New Jersey woman took a plea deal on Monday, admitting to the killing in exchange for a 10-year prison sentence. Robert Creter, 61, pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree aggravated manslaughter, the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office said on Tuesday. He told police he strangled Tamara 'Tammy' Tignor to death with his bare hands. Creter was initially charged with murder in the death of Tignor, who was 23 years old when she was found dead in Bridgewater Township on Nov. 4, 1997. Tignor's body was found on a dirt access road by a local resident. She had been living in Newark, about 20 miles east of where she was found dead. The case went cold for decades, until DNA found at the scene was retested in 2023. Cops said the DNA matched Creter, who was born in Canada and moved back to his native country in 2002. He was living in Winnipeg, Manitoba, when cops identified him as a suspect. Eyewitnesses in 1997 said Tignor was last seen alive stepping into an orange van on the streets of Newark. Investigators said Creter had access to such a van. Creter was first charged in May 2023, and following the diplomatic process, he was finally arrested in June 2024 and extradited to the U.S. in November. Creter's sentencing hearing was scheduled for July 11. Under the terms of the plea deal, he must serve at least 8.5 years without parole.

Manitoba man pleads guilty in U.S. killing of woman 27 years ago

A Manitoba man has admitted he strangled a woman in New Jersey in the late '90s, putting an end to a homicide case that had remained unsolved for decades in the U.S. Robert Creter pleaded guilty Monday in the death of Tamara "Tammy" Tignor from Newark, N.J., Somerset County Prosecutor's Office said Tuesday. The 61-year-old was extradited to New Jersey from Winnipeg in November after being charged with first-degree murder in connection to the decades-old cold case. A news release issued by the prosecutor's office Tuesday said Creter admitted to strangling Tignor with his bare hands in the Township of Bridgewater on the afternoon of Nov. 4, 1997. The 23-year-old woman's body was found on a dirt access road near Washington Valley Park later that day. DNA collected from the remains linked Creter to her killing in 2023, after more advanced testing was used. Prosecutors said the man — a Canadian citizen who was working as a day labourer in Bridgewater when Tignor's body was found — moved to Manitoba in 2002 and remained there until his extradition. Creter had been homeless in Winnipeg in the months leading to his arrest last June. The man pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of aggravated manslaughter as part of a plea deal. Prosecutors have agreed to a 10-year prison sentence, with 85 per cent of that sentence to be served without parole, the release said. Sentencing has been set for July 11.

NJ woman charged with attempted murder in road rage shooting

A New Jersey woman is facing an attempted murder charge after an alleged road rage shooting early last month. Juliette Piscopo, 26, is accused of pulling up next to another vehicle on Route 22 in North Plainfield and opening fire on Feb. 2 around 9:05 p.m., the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office announced on Tuesday. The gunshots shattered the victim's front driver's side and passenger side windows, hit the fuel cap on the driver's side and broke the rear passenger window. Piscopo, a resident of Greenbrook, then allegedly fled the scene in her Mercedes-Benz. The victim, who was not identified, escaped the incident unharmed. The dispute purportedly began about 20 minutes earlier in Dunellen when Piscopo attempted to merge into the victim's lane before then passing the victim and another driver on the shoulder. She then got behind the victim and began following them into North Plainfield, according to police. Piscopo, who surrendered last week, is now facing a potential sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison on the attempted murder charge. She has also been charged with two weapons offenses, the prosecutor's office said. She is currently still in custody at Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing.
