Local speller eliminated in National Spelling Bee finals

(WHTM) — A Midstate speller exited the Scripps National Spelling Bee early in Thursday night's finals. Akshaj Somisetty, of Mechanicsburg, was asked a multiple choice question for the definition of an imbroglio in the second round of the finals, the 12th round overall. He answered 'a stone carving' and was the first to hear the bell signifying elimination from the tournament. The correct answer was 'a complicated question.' In the first round, Somisetty correctly spelled 'gomphosis' to move on. A Mountain View Middle School 8th grader, Somisetty finishes 9th in his second appearance in the national tournament. T-A-J-I-N spells final round berth for Midstate student in National Spelling Bee

(WHTM) — An eighth grader from our area is a finalist in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and will compete against eight others Thursday night for the title. Akshaj Somisetty is an eighth grader at Mountain View Middle School in the Cumberland Valley School District and it's his second time competing in the national spelling bee. He tied for 60th place last year. This year, he'll finish no worse than 9th. In Wednesday's semifinals, he correctly spelled Tajin to lock in his spot in Thursday's finals. To make it to the finals, he had to spell henotheism, thermolysis, blazar, adenitis, cinchona, and Tajin, as well as providing a definition for a 'chortle,' a synonym for 'lucrative' and a definition for arborescent. HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — A Harrisburg-area student will once again compete in the National Spelling Bee. In a field of 243 top young spellers, one student from Harrisburg will be looking to become the best in this year's 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee, which will take place from May 27-29 at National Harbor, Maryland. Subscribe Now Mountain View Middle School student Akshaj Somisetty will make his return to the National Spelling Bee stage after placing 60th overall in last year's competition. According to the Spelling Bee's website, Somisetty, who is now in 8th grade, speaks three languages, including English, Spanish, and Telugu. In his free time, his favorite hobbies include biking, swimming, sleeping, and playing board games. He will join hundreds of other spellers ranging in age from 8 to 14, and each will have a chance to make their mark in what is the 100th anniversary of this iconic spelling competition. 'Reaching 100 years is more than a milestone – it's a testament to the enduring power of words, learning, and the human spirit,' Corrie Loeffler, the Executive Director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, said. 'For a century, this competition has brought people together through eras of profound change – from world wars to the digital age – and still, the Bee continues to inspire excellence, curiosity, and connection. It's a living piece of American history, and we're honored to celebrate its legacy.' The broadcast schedule for this year's spelling bee is the following: The preliminaries will be streamed on Bounce XL, Grit Xtra, Laff More, and from 8 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27. The quarterfinals will be streamed on Bounce XL, Grit Xtra, Laff More, and from 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28. The semifinals broadcast will air 8-10 p.m. on ION on Wednesday, May 28. (The live semifinals will be streamed on Bounce XL, Grit Xtra, Laff More, and from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. earlier that day.) The finals will air live in primetime on ION from 8-10 p.m. on Thursday, May 29. CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A Cumberland County middle school student won the Central Pennsylvania Spelling Bee for the second consecutive year and will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May 2025. Akshaj Somisetty, an eighth-grader at Mountain View Middle School in the Cumberland Valley School District, won the 2025 Central PA Spelling Bee in Round 16 by correctly spelling 'prodition.' Somisetty was first place of over 200 spellers from 10 Central Pennsylvania counties who participated in this year's Central PA Spelling Bee.
