(WHTM) — An eighth grader from our area is a finalist in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and will compete against eight others Thursday night for the title.
Akshaj Somisetty is an eighth grader at Mountain View Middle School in the Cumberland Valley School District and it's his second time competing in the national spelling bee. He tied for 60th place last year.
This year, he'll finish no worse than 9th.
In Wednesday's semifinals, he correctly spelled Tajin to lock in his spot in Thursday's finals.
To make it to the finals, he had to spell henotheism, thermolysis, blazar, adenitis, cinchona, and Tajin, as well as providing a definition for a 'chortle,' a synonym for 'lucrative' and a definition for arborescent.
Somisetty is one of nine spellers who will compete in Thursday's finals, set to take place at 8 p.m. live on Ion, WHTM-TV 27.2.

Storm Team 3: Dry and warm Tuesday, wet weather moves in Wednesday

The new week started out with a quiet weather pattern. High pressure moved in over the weekend brought in direr air at the surface which led to comfortable conditions, despite highs still reaching the mid and upper 80s. Weatherwise, a similar day is expected for Tuesday. A mainly sunny sky will set up again with temperatures in the mid to upper 80s. We can expect a strong onshore wind throughout the day with gusts over 20 mph. Tuesday's sky will have a hazy appearance due to Canadian wildfire smoke that has been drifting into the southeastern United States. Air quality may be an issue for people with severe respiratory issues. Rain and storm chances will make a return on Wednesday and will continue through Friday from an area of disorganized clouds over Florida. This system will drift northward over the coming days as it becomes a little more organized. As the area of low pressure moves over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, the National Hurricane Center has highlighted it for potential tropical development. The overall development risk is low (10%) over the next five days. Regardless of any tropical development, this system will bring heavy rain to the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Rainfall totals will be over 1-2″, especially near the coast. A drier pattern will return in time for the weekend along with temperatures back in the lower 90s for highs. Victim recalls having gun pulled on him after Corvette crash on I-40

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some scary moments for a Memphis driver after a gun was pointed at him following a crash with his son's Corvette last week along I-40 in Northeast Memphis. The victim, who did not want to be identified, said his son called him after he got into an accident with the driver of a black Nissan Murano Friday morning at I-40 east and Sycamore View Road. The father drove to the son's location. He said after he saw the driver of the Murano flee the scene, he followed him in his truck, but backed off when the driver pointed a gun at him. 'I said, okay, okay. I let him go because I had his information,' he said. 'It's Memphis. I don't like it. I only work and come home, and that's it.' The man's son said the driver of the Murano swerved into his lane and hit the passenger side of his Chevy Corvette, causing about $3,200 worth of damage. A camera inside the Corvette captured the crash and the driver getting out of the black SUV. He said after they moved to a safer spot along the interstate, they called the police. However, he said the driver told him he didn't have insurance or a driver's license and asked if he could switch places with his driver. 'Once we told him no, they kind of sat in the car for a while. I was on the phone trying to get the police, and all of the sudden I just see him take off. It wasn't casual, you could hear his tires screech,' said the driver of the Corvette. Police released a picture of the black Nissan Murano with the temporary Tennessee tag QK8GRL9. Mother, sons killed in I-40 wreck remembered by loved ones The driver of the Corvette said the Murano has heavy damage to the driver's side back door. He said the driver of the Murano showed them the registration information for the SUV, but told him the vehicle belonged to the mother of his child. The man behind the wheel of the Murano is facing a charge of aggravated assault. Call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH if you recognize the man or vehicle. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
