Sonder announces retirement from VALORANT after Red Bull Instalock
The ES TIMES — Veteran Game Changers player Diana 'sonder' Zhang has officially announced her retirement from VALORANT competition, with Red Bull Instalock 2025 being her final appearance on the stage. The Chinese-American player, who currently represents FlyQuest RED, shared the news on social media, stating that she will be stepping away from professional esports to pursue new goals in her life. 'I am grateful for all the amazing people I have met along the way,' Sonder wrote. 'Thank you all for the support, love, and encouragement through every moment, whether it's the ups or the downs. I hope I've made it clear that no matter what, always have fun.' 'I'm not sad that it's over, I'm happy that it happened. I love you all.' Sonder's journey in VALORANT began in 2021 with Moon Raccoons Black, quickly rising to the top, joining Shopify Rebellion GC, where she spent over two years. Her successful tenure with the team saw her reach the final of the 2022 Game Changers Championship, cementing her position as one of the best duelists in the industry. In early 2024, Sonder joined FlyQuest RED, remaining with them for over a year before announcing her decision to retire. The team issued a heartfelt farewell message to her: "Thank you, Sonder, for your time with us at RED and Game Changers. Your impact on the team and the scene as a whole has been incredible. You willbegreatlymissed." Sonder's final appearance was on May 2–3 at the Red Bull Instalock event, which took place at the Red Bull Gaming Sphere in London. Fans can follow the event live on the official Red Bull Gaming Twitch and YouTube channels. Sonder's retirement comes at a time of significant change in the scene, with another Game Changers star, Ava "florescent" Eugene, also announcing she will be taking a break from competition in 2025 after moving to Team Apeks in the EMEA region.

Historic California Hotel Location Has Closed After 86 Years
The hospitality industry was hit hard by the pandemic, as travelers were simply unable to reach destinations and take trips while locked down due to stay-at-home orders. The industry is reaching pre-COVID turnout half a decade later, but growing economic issues have also made it difficult to stay profitable. One historic hotel is feeling the effects in California, and will be shutting its doors at the end of the month. The Shangri-La Hotel in Santa Monica is closing to end May, ending an 86-year run of hospitality in the area. The Shangri-La was acquired by San Francisco-based tech company Sonder in 2023, and was renamed to "The Beacon." The hotel appears to have gone dark, as rooms are no longer listed for sale and contact information has been removed. The website also redirects travelers to Marriott's home page. Bookings are unavailable through third-party websites, and some Yelp reviews indicate that existing reservations at the hotel will not be honored, per the Santa Monica Daily Press. 'I made three bookings with Sonder The Beacon… one to stay in June, one in July and one in September,' said one reviewer set to travel from New Zealand. 'I received an email last week, only six weeks out from our stay, from the hotel saying that the management… has now changed and they could no longer fulfill our booking.' The reviewer also noted that they lost around $350 in the refund process after differences in currency exchange rate, and that Sonder's customer service said the company would not be liable for the difference. 'Surely goodwill goes a long way in this instance. I guess not. What a shame,' the review said. Sonder is currently experiencing financial issues, closing 80% of locations last year according to Los Angeles Magazine. The company also laid off 17% of its workforce and received a deficiency notice from the Nasdaq Stock Market. The Shangri-La was built by architect William E. Foster in 1939 and eventually earned the status of a historic building by the city of Santa Monica. A sign in the doorway says 'Hotel temporarily closed. Reopening early June," and features branding for "The Eden," which appears to be the new name the property will reopen under later this summer. Historic Shangri La Hotel in Santa Monica Closes
Santa Monica's historic Shangri-La Hotel has gone dark; the doors shuttered by Sonder, a San Francisco tech company that took over the landmark in 2023. The 86-year old hostelry, renamed The Beacon when Sonder arrived, had been transformed into an automated rental in the style of Airbnb. Sonder properties did not typically have a front desk or room keys and amenities like housekeeping are requested through their app. "The fact that hotels still have a person typing in who knows what when you're checking in at a hotel is a complete joke," twentysomething CEO Francis Davidson-Tanguay told Skift. 'It's really laughable how far behind the hotel industry is from a tech perspective."Sonder closed 80 locations last year, laid off 17% of its workforce, and received a delinquency notice from Nasdaq before acquiring a new round of investment totaling $18 million. CRETECH reports that the owner of their former 125-room Craftsman hotel, across from Downtown's Apple store, recently defaulted on a $56 million loan. Today, Sonder lists only one L.A. property, the Winfield, on their website. Former locations, including the Beverly Terrace, City Center in Long Beach, and Lum Hotel near LAX no longer appear connected to Sonder. Marriott has entered into a licensing agreement to create Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy which will take over some 10,000 rooms from the company throughout 45 cities in the U.S. and abroad. The Santa Monica Daily Press reports that existing room reservations at the Shangri La / Beacon are not being honored, citing one guest from New Zealand who lost not only their room, but hundreds of dollars due to exchange rate differences. A sign on the door announces a new name and operation coming in June when it will be renamed Eden. The hotel will have the same Streamline Moderne architecture and breathtaking views of the Pacific but the price of paradise is high. It may be a pre-opening glitch, but room rates on the site start at $999 a night, or about five times the rate of Sonder's other L.A location.
