Deftones' Chino Moreno shares ‘cold, dystopic' remix of The Cure's ‘Warsong'

Deftones leader Chino Moreno has shared his own version of The Cure's 'Warsong', offering his own 'cold, dystopic' take on the track. The cover arrives as part of the remix record of The Cure's Songs of a Lost World, which arrived last year to huge acclaim. It's called Mixes of a Lost World and also features Four Tet's remix of the band's 'Alone', as well as offerings from the likes of Mogwai, Mura Masa and Paul Oakenfold. Now, Chino Moreno's new offering is the latest to arrive. While not too dissimilar from the original, it offers a more uncompromising take on the song. 'I chose 'Warsong' to remix as it's one of those slow-building, brooding musical pieces that have always drawn me into The Cure's music,' Moreno said. 'My idea with this remix was to strip it back slightly of its organic instrumentation and bring in ridged, mechanical percussion and some down-pitched vocals aimed to bring forth the cold/dystopic feel of the song while maintaining the core beauty of what existed.' Chino Moreno and Robert Smith previously joined forces when Smith shared his remix of 'Teenager' in 2020 for Deftones' White Pony remix album. In a statement, Smith previously said that the remix project began just after Christmas when he received 'a couple of unsolicited remixes' and 'really loved them.' He continued: 'The Cure has a colourful history with all kinds of dance music, and I was curious as to how the whole album would sound entirely reinterpreted by others. This curiosity resulted in a fabulous trip through all eight songs by 24 wonderful artists and remixers and is way beyond anything I could have hoped for.' Mixes of a Lost World will be released as a three-CD or vinyl LP deluxe edition, while a standard two-CD or vinyl LP edition will also be available. (A full track list for the deluxe edition is below.) The album is available to pre-order now, and the Cure will donate all of their recording royalties from the project to War Child UK — a cause that, Smith said, made Mixes 'an even more special release.'

The Cure: Designer Andy Vella on creating art for the goth rockers

Designer Andy Vella has been creating album covers for more than 40 years, with his work to be found in millions of homes around the world. "The weird thing I get is whenever I design a new album or a new logo for The Cure someone sends me a tattoo that they've just had done of it," he explains."I've seen pictures of Robert Smith's silhouette from Boys Don't Cry on people's backs, on their arses, on their legs, on their arms."I met [comedian] Greg Davies and he said, 'Did you do Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me?' and he got on his knees and bowed to me. I was so embarrassed and he just said: 'Oh my God, I grew up with that on my wall.'"For his latest record sleeve, Vella has used his much-lauded design skills for a project run by the charity War Child, as part of its fundraising efforts to help children caught up in conflict zones. Vella's career in design has seen him work with various musicians and authors over the years, from Jeff Buckley to Margaret Atwood, but it is his work with acclaimed goth rockers The Cure, often in collaboration with lead singer Robert Smith, for which he is best is also where his career began, soon after the band formed in Crawley in the still studying at art school, Vella was approached by on-off Cure guitarist Porl Thompson who wanted him to photograph another group he was playing in."He said, 'You've got a reputation at the college that you're really good at photography'... and by chance he showed Robert my work and then suddenly at the age of 18 I was being asked to design a record sleeve [for The Cure]," he record was the band's doom-laden third album Faith. Vella would later return to create the covers for some of The Cure's most iconic records, including the 1989's Disintegration, The Head on the Door from 1985 and last year's chart-topping Songs of a Lost World. Whenever he's working on a new design, Vella says he looks for "something that just makes you tap into what they're doing and you just riff on that"."With Robert, his lyrics are so inspiring... All you have to do is read one line quite often and suddenly you've got the start of something really great."It was this and the expansive brooding sound of Songs of a Lost World which saw Vella and Smith hit upon the design for the record, which features a stone statue head lying on its side."The Cure sounded just as brilliant and massive as they did back in the 80s... so the album had to have something large, something incredibly poignant and solid to represent that," Vella says. Even so, he admits the final look of a record can come about from something unexpected, as happened with the cover for 1987's Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss the band were on tour in Brazil, Vella was asked to fly out to Rio de Janeiro to get his design for the new album approved - despite the fact he was still working on the photo of a pair of heavily painted lips decided upon and the handwritten lettering printed on a separate sheet of clear plastic, he was experimenting with the layout in a taxi on the way to the airport when "we went over this sleeping policeman [speed bump] and the acetate just jumped to the middle of the sleeve"."Now I would always say don't put type in the middle of the sleeve, and especially the top, but it just stuck in place so I stuck it down with Sellotape thinking, 'well it's an option'," he says."I showed it to Robert when I got to Rio and he said: 'I love that, that's brilliant! I love the way you've placed the type.'"You can be really arty-farty about things but I think sometimes it's quite nice to let the universe take over," Vella adds with a laugh. For his latest record sleeve, Vella has created a cover for War Child's Secret 7" sees 700 creatives, such as designer Sir Paul Smith, sculptor Antony Gormley and Radiohead artist Stanley Donwood, all forming one-of-a-kind untitled record sleeves for a song by one of seven different artists - this year including Sophie Ellis-Bextor, The Cure, Gregory Porter and Scissor 700 records are then put on display at London's NOW Gallery, in Greenwich Peninsula until the start of June when they are auctioned off, with all the proceeds going to is only when the sale is over that buyers discover the song that they've purchased and which designer was behind the cover. It is not the first time Vella has taken part in Secret 7" having previously created record sleeves for the likes of The Rolling Stones, St Vincent and The Chemical it still left him a little stressed."There's just too much pressure! One year I was in there and I was next to [father of British pop art] Peter Blake," he says."It's a really amazing cause and you want to create something brilliant so that you raise a load of money for War Child."The charity started up in response to the Bosnian genocide. The Help Album, which it released in 1995, featured artists including Oasis, Radiohead, Suede and Portishead. War Child now works in more than a dozen countries helping children living in warzones. Describing the process of putting together his creation, Vella says it involved "going through the painstaking thing of creating about 20 iterations, all crap", before "suddenly you have that amazing Eureka moment".That Eureka moment led to a cover he considers to be "quite deep" and "very meaningful" - although of course he won't reveal which song he created it says the project is something he's proud to be part of."It's such an amazing, powerful cause, helping children in war-torn countries. It just shows you as well how music and art can bring people together." Secret 7" is on display at NOW Gallery, Greenwich Peninsula until 1 June with the 700 record sleeves then being sold in a global online auction on the project website in aid of War Child.

BRIT Awards: Charli XCX wins Mastercard Album of the Year

Charli XCX didn't think awards were "important" before she won Mastercard Album of the Year at the 2025 BRIT Awards. The 32-year-old pop star scooped the coveted award at the annual ceremony on Saturday (01.03.25) evening for her hit record 'Brat', having fought off competition from The Cure for 'Songs of a Lost World', Dua Lipa with 'Radical Optimism', Ezra Collective for 'Dance, No One's Watching' and The Last Dinner Party with 'Prelude to Ecstasy'. Speaking live on stage at London's O2 Arena, she said: "I used to tell myself that things like this weren't important, this kind of recognition, awards in general weren't important. And that was pretty easy for me to do because until last year I was literally never nominated for anything so now it's cool to not be in that position. "I've always felt like an outside in the industry but in particular in the British music industry. It feels really nice to be recognised for this album when I haven't made any sacrifices." The '360' hitmaker noted that she is "living proof" that no one needs to change themselves in order to succeed n the music industry but admitted that she is unlikely to ever do the same style of album again as she goes forward in her career. She said: "I've been doing my own thing in the corner of the industry for a minute. I've never really changed that, I've worked with the same incredible people and we've always been doing our thing. I guess this time round, culture caught up with us and wanted to be on the journey with us and that's really amazing. "I would just like to share this with all artists who have ever felt that they need to compromise to be regonised and to have their moment in the sun. I am living proof that, maybe it takes a long time, but you don't need to compromise your vision. "It's the long road but if you do your own thing and you do it well, eventually, I think if you believe in yourself enough and you make good enough music then people will resonate with you and be right there with you. Thanks to all the people who have been with me all the way. "I feel like it's in my instincts to not do the same thing twice, so I'll probably not make a record like this again, I'll reject it and do something completely different but that's the charm of being an artist."

Charli xcx's' Brat reign continues, as she clears the decks at BRIT Awards

LONDON (AP) — Charli xcx's 'Brat' reign continues, as she cleared the decks at this year's BRIT Awards – the U.K.'s leading music awards show. She won five awards at the 2025 Brits including artist, song and album of the year for 'Brat,' as well as the Songwriter of the year, which was announced ahead of the glitzy ceremony, in London Saturday. The awards come hot on the heels of Charli's wins at the Grammys last month, where she took the coveted Best Album. Chappell Roan won Best International Artist and Best International Song. Fontaines D.C. won Best International Group. The Cure received their first nomination in 30 years, for their deeply orchestral record 'Songs of a Lost World.' The Beatles were also nominated for the first time since 1977 for their first and only original recording of the 21st century. Sabrina Carpenter took to the stage, performing a medley of her hits, including whimsical country track 'Please, Please, Please' - which she recently re-recorded with Dolly Parton. Carpenter was also the recipient of the Global Success Award – the first time an international artist has received the honor. The show featured a tribute to the late One Direction member Liam Payne after the singer was found dead aged 31 last year. Founded in 1977, the Brits have evolved from a rough-around-the-edges industry event to a slick showcase for U.K. talent that has boosted the careers of future megastars including Adele. Myles Smith received the coveted Brits Rising Star award – following in the footsteps of Sam Fender and Adele. Speaking earlier in the week he said last year going to the BRIT Awards was a "dream" and it was great to be able to perform at the show knowing he has an award in his 'back pocket' Other performances included Teddy Swims, The Last Dinner Party and Sam Fender.
