The song references the 1972 Bloody Sunday shootings in Derry, where members of the British army's Parachute Regiment opened fire at civil rights demonstrators. Bono said: "I used to introduce this next song by explaining that it wasn't a rebel song. "Peace creates possibilities in the most intractable situations. Lord knows, there's a few of them out there right now. "Hamas release the hostages. Stop war. Israel be released from Benjamin Netanyahu. "All of you protect our aid workers, they are the best of us." Hosted by The Ivors Academy, the award ceremony aims to recognise and celebrate "exceptional achievements in songwriting and screen composing". "It's a beautiful thing to be given." BACK ON THE ROAD The singer is due to release a new album Britpop in the autumn and is due to start his UK, Ireland and European tour on May 31 in Edinburgh. Speaking about the new album, he said: "They (fans) can expect high octane guitars, at least for a few releases, until I jump back into pop, because we all get scared. She said: "I feel like we live in a world right now where there are so many great songwriters who are undeniably technically brilliant, but will unfortunately never get a big enough platform for people to actually hear or possibly record their work. "In my head, a great song alone has never actually been enough to captivate an audience, but instead, a song with a distinct identity coupled with a point of view, a potent culture surrounding it, and above all, conviction is what can catapult a songwriter from being technically good to globally renowned. Advertisement "As a songwriter, but above all, as an artist, conviction is everything. You literally die without it. It separates the frauds from the greats, the good singers, from the trendsetters. It's an undeniable sense of style and personality and of course, it's embracing the idea of daring to suck. "In my opinion, from writing songs with no fear and no agenda other than making something totally reflective of who you are, come the best songs. Songs that can soundtrack a night out, a summer, possibly even define a moment in time. The singer ended her speech calling out the songwriters in the room and encouraging them to "make what you want to hear". She said: "Make something with a niche and not something broad. Don't try and be clever. Advertisement "Be dumb, have fun and play songs for your friends and above all don't be afraid of yourself or of your own internal language, because it's the thing that makes you distinctly you."

Irish singer Orla Gartland 'can't believe' Ivor Novello win
Irish singer Orla Gartland has said she "can't believe" she won an Ivor Novello award following her success at the awards ceremony in London on Thursday night. The Dubliner won the Best Song Musically and Lyrically award for her track Mine, beating the likes of compatriots Fontaines DC and the British acts Raye and Lola Young. Speaking to Oliver Callan on RTÉ Radio 1 this morning after her big win, Gartland said: "I've just woken up and I still can't believe it. "My parents came over for it, I almost didn't want them to come over for it as I felt there was such little chance of winning but I was so glad they were there." When Callan said it was a "lovely thing to win", Gartland agreed wholeheartedly. "It is, it's my first time being at anything like that or having a red carpet experience, but it's a really special one," she said. "The category that I was in is decided by other songwriters, the panel are my peers or people through the generations who are making music, so there's no big corporate aspect to it, it feels like it's actually about the music. I don't know if that's the same for some of the other awards." She also joked that she asked British popstar Charli XCX, who was named Songwriter of the Year at the awards, for a photo but "got rejected". "Not by her, by handlers?", Callan asked in surprise. "She did have some people with her, it was all very chic," Gartland laughed. "I actually really respected it, it was very cool. "There was a red carpet room you got brought into after you win, I wanted to respect her space, so I asked my manager to ask who she was with. She probably would have said yes to her credit." Speaking about the progression of her career, Gartland added: "It's a marathon not a sprint. I've done this job since school and I've never had one big viral overnight rise, it's been really gradual. "I'm very content with that, I'm very grateful because it feels like it's never got bigger than where I'm at. If you do get a moment in the spotlight in this job they rarely come around a second time and I'm glad that all of this is happening at this point and not a few years ago. I feel ready for it." "Playing live shows is a skill in itself, it takes years to become good at that, it's a different set of skills to writing songs. I played The Olympia just over a month ago, which is obviously a dream venue, again I was just happy that that didn't happen sooner. "I felt like the show was at the right level for my name to be on that ticket. I'm very happy with the pace of it all."

Ivor Novello Awards 2025: Charli XCX, U2 and Robbie Williams win big
This year's Ivor Novello Awards marks its 70th year of celebrating outstanding achievements in the field of songwriting and composition. 2025's ceremony, held last night at Grosvenor House in London, saw 22 songwriters and composers collecting awards over 14 categories, with over 70% of winners being first-timers. Charli XCX, Lola Young, Self Esteem, U2 and Robbie Williams were among the winners. Check out the full list below. Charli XCX was named Songwriter of the Year. Her album 'Brat', which featured in Euronews Culture's Best Albums of 2024, was praised for its global and cultural impact. "I'm sure you all agree, I am hardly Bob Dylan," she joked to an audience that included Bruce Springsteen, "but one thing I certainly do is commit to the bit". Berwyn won his first Ivor Novello, taking home the award for Best Album. The judges commended his album 'Who Am I''s 'vivid storytelling that transcends generations, race and social differences, offering a voice to those often unseen by society'. Lola Young received the Rising Star Award, Self Esteem took home the Visionary Award, and Raffertie won Best Original Film Score for their work on the soundtrack from the Oscar-winning film The Substance. Check out our interview with Coralie Fargeat, the director of The Substance. Elsewhere, winners include Orla Gartland (Best Song Musically And Lyrically), Sans Soucis (Best Contemporary Song), Robbie Williams (Music Icon) and U2 (Academy Fellowship). U2 became the first Irish band to win the Ivor Novello fellowship, with the award recognising almost 50 years of hits, including 'Sunday Bloody Sunday', 'I Will Follow', 'With Or Without You' and 'One'. Speaking on stage, Bono paid tribute to the power of music. "Songs can be arrows through time if they come from the right place," he said. "They can fly higher and farther, last longer, hit harder. They can pierce the hardest armour of the human heart. I don't know if they can change the world, but they changed us." Here are the Ivor Novello 2025 winners in full:
