Spain women's team coach Montse Tomé is 'disappointed' after not having her contract extended
MADRID (AP) — Montse Tomé had been expecting to keep her job as coach of Spain's women's national team after leading it to the final of the European Championship last month and says she doesn't know why her contract wasn't extended. 'Things happen in soccer that you don't expect,' Tome said in an interview with Spanish radio Cadena Ser. The Spanish soccer federation announced Monday that it was not extending Tomé's contract and will replace her with former player Sonia Bermúdez. The announcement came two weeks after Spain lost the Euro 2025 final to England in a penalty shootout. Tomé, who took over the job after Spain won the 2023 World Cup, also led Spain to the title of the inaugural Women's Nations League last year. Tomé said she was taken by surprise with the federation's decision to not extend her contract that expires at the end of the month. She said federation president Rafael Louzán had told her that she would remain in charge if Spain did well at Euro 2025. 'He has always shown a lot of confidence in me, but I'm a little disappointed about how everything was handled. He didn't keep his word about the continuity. I felt that he was happy with my work," Tomé said. "It was hard to understand everything that happened since the final. It's understandable that the federation wants to go into a new direction, but that message wasn't really clear for me. They had given me a different impression.' Goodbye messages Tomé said she was not bothered by not receiving goodbye messages from her players on social media. 'I received many messages from them,' she said. 'I felt very respected by everyone. I'm not concerned about whether they posted them online or not." The decision to replace Tomé — the first women to coach the senior women's team in Spain — was made by the federation's board members. She had been an assistant to former coach Jorge Vilda during the World Cup and was promoted in the fallout of former federation president Luis Rubiales' nonconsensual kiss of player Jenni Hermoso. Tomé had been criticized by some for not including Hermoso in recent call-ups, but she always maintained it was a decision based on sporting performances. 'I don't want to think it had anything to do with it,' Tomé said. "Since I was appointed, they allowed me to make decisions based on my sporting criteria. No one told me to bring in this player or another. I've never had to send the list of players to a president.' ___ AP soccer:

New Coach in Spain: Montse Tomé Out After Runner-Up Finish at Women's Euro
Spain's women's national team is making a coaching change two weeks after reaching the final of the 2025 UEFA Women's Euro. Montse Tomé will not have her contract renewed and will be replaced by former player Sonia Bermúdez, the Spanish soccer federation said Monday. Another former Spain player, Iraia Iturregi, was named the team's second coach. The decision was made by the federation's board members after Tomé led Spain to the Euro 2025 final, which it lost to England in a penalty shootout on July 27. "The board of directors would like to express its gratitude for Montse Tomé's work, professionalism and dedication in her various roles during her time as a member of the national teams at the Spanish soccer federation, particularly during her time as national team coach," the federation said. Tomé replaced former coach Jorge Vilda following the team's World Cup title in 2023. She led Spain to the title of the inaugural Women's Nations League in 2024. Her current contract with the national team was valid until the end of the month. Tomé was the first woman to coach the senior women's team in Spain. She had been an assistant to Vilda during the World Cup and was promoted in the fallout of former federation president Luis Rubiales' nonconsensual kiss of player Jenni Hermoso during the World Cup's awards ceremony in Australia. Spain has enjoyed some peace and stability since Rubiales was convicted of sexual assault for the kiss that ignited one of the worst crises in Spanish soccer. The outrage surrounding the scandal led to widespread changes and improved conditions for the women's national team. Spanish society called for more support for women, and sports officials ultimately were forced to review outdated protocols related to the women's squad. Bermúdez was a Spain captain — with 63 appearances and 35 goals internationally — and also played for Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, among other clubs. She retired as a player in 2020, and her first job as a coach was with a Real Madrid youth team. Bermúdez had been coaching the youth squads of Spain's national team. She was currently with the under-23 squad. The board that made the decision was composed of 30 members, half of them women. Spain's next match is in October in the semifinals of the Nations League. Spain part ways with manager Montse Tomé after defeat in Euro 2025 final
The Spanish football federation (RFEF) has confirmed the contract of its women's team manager, Montse Tomé, will not be renewed when it expires at the end of August. The under-23 side's manager, Sonia Bermúdez, has been appointed to replace Tomé, with the former Spain international to be assisted by Iraia Iturregi in a new joint model. Tomé arrived amid controversy in 2023, the assistant manager taking over from Jorge Vilda, who was sacked in the aftermath of Spain's first World Cup win. Long-held frustrations boiled over after the federation's then president Luis Rubiales's inappropriate actions during the medal ceremony, including kissing Jenni Hermoso. Tomé left Hermoso out of her first squad, citing a need to protect her, a decision the player criticised. She guided the team to the 2023-24 Nations League title and to the final of Women's Euro 2025, where they lost against England last month. The federation's board thanked Tomé for 'her work, professionalism and dedication in various roles during her time as a member of the national teams at the RFEF, especially during her time as the national team coach'. Bermúdez scored 35 goals in 63 games for Spain and played for clubs such as Rayo Vallecano, Barcelona, Western New York Flash, Atlético Madrid and Levante, winning nine league titles and three Copa de la Reina trophies. She coached the under-19 and under-20 women's national teams, winning two consecutive European titles, before taking charge of the under-23 side. Iturregi played 15 seasons in the Spanish top flight, winning four league titles with Athletic Club.
