Sony's new XM6 headphones are surprisingly easy to repair, even for battery replacements

TL;DR iFixit's teardown of Sony's latest flagship headphones reveals some welcome repairability improvements. The WH-1000XM6's battery is secured with screws instead of adhesive, allowing for easier replacements. The headphone's drivers, USB-C port, audio jack, and button board are also much easier to access. Sony recently unveiled the WH-1000XM6, the highly anticipated successor to one of the best flagship headphones on the market. The new model brings several improvements over its predecessor, including a significantly faster QN3 processor, better ANC, enhanced voice call quality, longer battery life, and more. The XM6 also brings some welcome design changes. Sony has reintroduced the folding mechanism on the new model, which was omitted on the XM5. The company has also added detachable earpads for easier replacement and designed a completely new travel case. But that's not all. Sony has reportedly also redesigned the XM6's insides, which could improve repairability. iFixit has spotted several upgrades that should make the flagship headphones easier to repair. Its teardown reveals that the lithium polymer battery powering the XM6 is secured in a plastic housing with two screws instead of double-sided adhesive, making replacements easy. The modular plate housing the XM6's drivers is also held down by Phillips-head screws and a rubber plug, allowing for straightforward disassembly. Sony has also made the modular USB-C port, audio jack, and button board much easier to access than they were on the XM5. You can check out how easy it is to pull the headphones apart in iFixit's teardown below. Although the company has yet to share a repair manual for the headphones, you can expect it to arrive soon. Sony has published one for the older model, and we don't see why it won't do the same for its latest flagship headphones. As for replacement parts, Sony currently doesn't offer any for the WH-1000XM6 or its predecessor. However, given that the company is actively making changes to improve the repairability of its headphones, there's a chance it could start selling replacement parts soon. What do you think of Sony's decision to make its headphones easier to repair? Would these changes convince you to buy the WH-1000XM6 instead of a flagship headphone from a different brand? The XM6 are set to launch two days after the Xperia 1 VII, on May 15 at 9AM PDT time (4PM UTC). Sony's upcoming flagship noise-canceling headphones are set to receive several key upgrades. There's an additional rumor that Sony may bring water resistance to the XM6, but that's still speculation at this point. WH-1000XM6 in their folded state (credit)

Sony WH-1000XM6 emerge in Amazon listing ahead of launch

Nearly three years since the launch of the WH-1000XM5, Sony is finally ready to introduce a new version of its premium over-ear headphones. Sony's highly anticipated WH-1000XM6 made an unexpected appearance in an Amazon Spain listing (since deleted), revealing a plethora of key specs and pricing ahead of their launch. Sony WH-1000XM6 leaked image (credit: Reddit) A Reddit user also posted a leaked image of the headphones revealing their redesigned headband and folding hinges, which would be a move back to the XM4 design, making the headphones easier to store. The XM6 are set to bring a multitude of improvements over their predecessor, including a new QN3 HD Noise Cancelling processor. According to the listing, the QN3 is 7x faster than the QN1 chip inside the outgoing XM5s. This should improve the sound quality coming from the headphones as well as their noise cancellation. WH-1000XM6 listing on Amazon Spain Sony will opt for 30mm dynamic drivers and is bringing a total of 12 microphones (6 on each side) with Multi Noise Sensor technology with AI enhancements. The XM6 are also retaining their Hi-Res Audio, LDAC and DSEE Extreme support alongside the 360 Reality Audio with head tracking. The listing also confirms a 10-band customizable EQ, Bluetooth 5.3 with multipoint pairing. The XM6 are also getting Adaptive Sound Control, Quick Attention mode, Background Music, Wind Noise Reduction, and Speak to Chat. Battery life is rated at 30 hours with a 3-minute quick charge bringing back three hours of playback. The XM6's listed dimensions are 25.69cm x 20cm x 7.83 cm, with a weight of 254 grams. They will be available in Black, Platinum Silver, and Midnight Blue. The retail package consists of a carrying case, a USB-C cable, and a 1.2m 3.5mm cable. Sony XM6 will cost $449.99 and are expected to launch as early as next week between May 14 and May 16. Via (in French)

Sony WH-1000XM6 leak reveals all specs and details

There's a good reason the WH-1000XM5 over-the-ear headphones can be found in pretty much every best headphones list on the internet (ours included). And now we have information about the next model that seems to be coming shortly, the Sony WH-1000XM6. Looking at the specs table above, it's important to put all those features and specs into perspective. The previous model already raised the bar for noise cancellation, but it seems that Sony is amping up its game in this department with the WH-1000XM6. Here are the main differences between the two models. Sony WH-1000XM6 vs WH-1000XM5* New QN3 real-time noise-canceling processor vs QN1 A little heavier at 254 grams versus 250 g for the previous model Bluetooth 5.3 versus 5.2 on the XM5 6 microphones on each cup for a total of 12 vs 10 mics for the XM5 New Platinum Silver color but the Smoky Pink is missing More expensive starting at $449 versus $399 for the previous model All other specs look pretty much the same (codecs, features) *based on leaked info Even though the differences might not be that many, a new noise-suppressing chip and two additional microphones sound like a decent upgrade. The WH-1000XM5 uses the QN1 chip, so Sony is skipping one generation, going straight to the QN3, which will potentially bring even better noise cancellation and sound quality. The retail box content (and the included 1.2mm 3.5mm cable, specifically) also hits that Sony is going to keep the 3.5 mm jack on the WH-1000XM6, which is a good thing, as you can use the headphones both in wireless and wired mode. There's also a carrying case included, which isn't a new thing, as all previous models from the series came with cases in the retail package. The leaked Sony WH-1000XM6 Amazon Spain listing | Image by Dealabs" Finally, there's not much difference when it comes to colors. The previous model is available in four hues - Black, Midnight Blue, Silver, and Smoky Pink, while, according to the leaked listing, the WH-1000XM6 will launch in only three colors - Black, Platinum Silver, and Midnight Blue. The report from Dealabs also includes a retail price for the WH-1000XM6. According to the information, these headphones will launch in the US between May 14 and May 16 (the listing says May 15) at $449.99. This is a $50 price jump compared to the previous generation, which launched for $399 last May. Are you excited about the next flagship headphones by Sony? Would you buy them at $449.99?
