West Branch grad named Freshman of the Year

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – West Branch graduate Sophia Gregory was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year on Monday. The YSU forward led all conference freshmen in points, rebounds, steals and blocks per game during this season. Her 7.9 rebounds per contest also led the Penguins and ranked second in the entire Horizon League. Gregory was a two-time member of the WKBN Starting 5 in both 2002 and 2024. She is also the third player in YSU history to be named Horizon League Freshman of the Year since the award started in 2014. YSU senior Jewel Watkins was also named Second Team All-Horizon League on Monday. DETROIT, Michigan (WKBN) – Youngstown State topped Detroit 67-59 in Horizon League women's basketball action at Calihan Hall on Thursday night. With the victory, the Penguins snapped a five-game losing streak. Sophia Gregory led YSU with 19 points, while Haley Thierry added 18 in the victory. Malia Magestro chipped in with 10. Detroit was led by Emaia O'Brien who piled up 15 points. Makayla Jackson added 12, while Aaliyah McQueen finished with 11 in the setback. YSU improves to 10-17 overall on the season and 5-12 in Horizon League play. YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Youngstown State women's basketball suffered another heartbreaking loss in overtime as they fell to IU Indy, 73-68, in Horizon League action on Saturday. The Penguins led by six points with 32 seconds to play before the Jaguars drilled three 3-pointers in the final half-minute to force overtime. IU Indy would then outscore YSU, 13-8, in overtime. Youngstown State was led in scoring by Hermitage native Malia Magestro with 22 points, who also went a school record 14-14 from the free throw line. Freshman and West Branch graduate Sophia Gregory notched 17 points and 10 rebounds in a team-leading 41 minutes of action. It's her third double-double of her young career. Also notching double-figures scoring for the 'Guins was Jewels Watkins with 14 points. IU Indy saw a game-high 29 points from Katie Davidson and another 19 on five 3-pointers from Nevaeh Foster as they move to 7-19 on the season. The setback sends YSU to a fifth consecutive loss and second straight in overtime as they fall to 9-17 overall and 4-12 in conference play. GREEN BAY, WI. (WKBN) – Youngstown State women's basketball suffered a 58-47 loss to Green Bay in a Horizon League matchup on Thursday. The Phoenix have now won 13 consecutive games and sit at 13-1 in conference play and 20-5 overall. Despite the loss, Jewel Watkins led all scorers in the contest with 14 points while shooting 2-for-3 from the three-point line. Two local products Sophia Gregory (West Branch) and Malia Magestro (Kennedy Catholic) each notched 12 points. Gregory, who is just a freshman, also grabbed seven rebounds while Magestro dished out four assists. With the loss, YSU falls to 9-14 on the season and 4-9 in conference play. The Mastodons, who are now 12-0 in Horizon League play, shot 46% from the field in the 23-point victory. Despite the setback, West Branch graduate and YSU freshman Sophia Gregory registered 12 points and 8 rebounds while Jewel Watkins paced the Penguins with 16 points. YSU freshman Erica King also added 11 points and Haley Thierry hauled in a team-high 9 rebounds. With the loss, YSU falls to 9-13 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
