YSU women drops fifth straight in tough overtime loss
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Youngstown State women's basketball suffered another heartbreaking loss in overtime as they fell to IU Indy, 73-68, in Horizon League action on Saturday.
The Penguins led by six points with 32 seconds to play before the Jaguars drilled three 3-pointers in the final half-minute to force overtime. IU Indy would then outscore YSU, 13-8, in overtime.
Youngstown State was led in scoring by Hermitage native Malia Magestro with 22 points, who also went a school record 14-14 from the free throw line.
Freshman and West Branch graduate Sophia Gregory notched 17 points and 10 rebounds in a team-leading 41 minutes of action. It's her third double-double of her young career.
Also notching double-figures scoring for the 'Guins was Jewels Watkins with 14 points.
IU Indy saw a game-high 29 points from Katie Davidson and another 19 on five 3-pointers from Nevaeh Foster as they move to 7-19 on the season.
The setback sends YSU to a fifth consecutive loss and second straight in overtime as they fall to 9-17 overall and 4-12 in conference play.
YSU travels to take on Detroit Mercy on Thursday, Feb. 20 for a 7 p.m. tipoff.

YSU senior finishes Top-10 at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships
EUGENE, Oregon (WKBN) – YSU senior Tye Hunt finished 10th in the long jump at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday. Hunt's best jump measured 7.77m at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. University of Florida senior and three-time First Team All-American Malcolm Clemons won the event with a jump of 8.04m on his first attempt to win his first national title. Hunt was one of 24 finalists in the country to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He posted a season-best 7.92m at the Virginia Challenge in April. He also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships last year and finished in ninth place to earn All-American honors. Hunt's teammate Hunter Christopher will compete in the 5,000m NCAA finals on Friday. Alabama gets leading hitter from Horizon League school that discontinued baseball program Coach Rob Vaughn and Alabama baseball have picked up their first position player from the transfer portal since the Crimson Tide's season ended in the Hattiesburg Regional of the NCAA Tournament a week ago. Infielder Justin Osterhouse announced his commitment to Alabama in a post to social media on Saturday. Osterhouse, a sophomore last season, spent the past two years in the Horizon League with Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). The school announced it was discontinuing its baseball and softball programs on May 23. A left-handed hitter, Osterhouse led the Mastodons at the plate with a .328 average, 16 home runs and 46 RBIs this past season. He added 10 doubles and led the team in stolen bases (13) and on-base percentage (.453) while starting 52 of the team's 53 games. Listed as 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, the Grand Rapids, Mich. native started 30 games this past season at second game, 16 at third base, and six at shortstop. His best showing at the plate came on May 15 against Wright State in Fort Wayne. In a 21-17 Mastodons victory, Osterhouse hit four home runs in a 5-for-6, eight-RBI night. Alabama used senior Brennen Norton, Jon Young Jr. and Garrett Staton at second base this past season. The Crimson Tide went 41-18 overall, winning 40 regular-season games for the first time since 2002. They fell to Miami and Southern Miss on back-to-back days at the NCAA Tournament in Hattiesburg. Ohio State isn't immune either. We've seen additions, modifications, and cancellations of some of the future opponents as the Big Ten has expanded, the College Football Playoff has gotten bigger, and Name, Image and Likeness continues to change the landscape of talent on teams. On Wednesday, Ohio State announced further football nonconference schedule changes, and we're here to keep you in the loop. All told, there are three changes to the nonconference schedules in 2029 and 2030. Ohio State added a game against Navy for the season opener on Sept. 1, 2029. However, in order to make room for that game, the Buckeyes and the University of Nevada have agreed to move their previously scheduled game to Sept. 7, 2030. Ohio State also added a game against Youngstown State, to be played at Ohio Stadium on Sept. 15, 2029. That all means that the Buckeyes have just one game remaining to fill out their non-conference schedules over the next five years by way of the season opener on August 1, 2030.
