Chance to meet Wicklow's bats on free tours
The talks are free, with no booking required, making them accessible to all ages.
Wicklow Mountains National is home to nine out of the ten bat species found in the country. Several hundred Soprano Pipistrelle bats use the Information Office in Glendalough as a maternity roost each spring, and bat walks are organised by the park to observe these and other bat species.
After dark the park comes alive with nocturnal creatures and it is hoped that participants in the walk will be able to witness with their own eyes several of the native bat species flying around at different locations around the valley.
The first bat walk of the summer season took place on Wednesday, June 11, with further events due to take place on Wednesday, July 9, at 9.30pm and on Wednesday, August 6, at 8.30pm. The August 6 walk will also be preceded by a bat talk taking place at 7.30pm.
Participants are advised to check for the weather forecast for each event to make sure they are wearing suitable attire. There may also be some midges, so bring along some repellent and a midge net, if you have one.
The meeting point is at the national park information office. Bring a torch to find your way back to the car, but please do not use the torch during the actual bat walk, as it will scare the bats away.
