Two Daviess county schools earn global leadership award
OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) — Two Daviess County Elementary Schools are among the top in the world when it comes to student leadership. Sorgho Elementary and Country Heights Elementary schools have earned legacy school status. It's a recognition fewer than 30 schools across the globe achieve. For students, the school day started as any day would. They recited the pledge of allegiance and listened to announcements in the gym. A special message revealed their daily actions toward independence landed them on a list of world two schools joined only 25 others around the world that have achieved legacy status through the Leader In Me program. Legacy status is birthed through a the program is based on a book by the author Stephen Covey. '7 Habits of Highly Effective People' discusses life and leadership skills like goal setting, decision making, discipline and teamwork. Becoming a legacy school requires everyone from administration, teachers and young minds to walk the walk. '…you want to score this on the test? you want to set a goal? you want to make a team?…whatever actions you're going to take to get to those goals,' says Marjie Pippin, Sorgho's Principal. For Sorgho, the journey started 13 years ago. Muriel Summers, the programs global ambassador, says it takes 8 years of rigorous work before they even think about inviting a school to be considered. She says 100 percent of the students should be involved or leading in some form, and schools answer questions and present data showcasing how they meet the criteria. 'Most schools are focused on the academics…which is our core business. Leaders in these schools are also focused on developing the whole child…the mind, the heart, the body, and the spirit of the child,' says Summers, global ambassador for the FranklinCovey's Leader In Me program. The school was evaluated in February. 'They spent the day with us. They spoke to our students. They spoke to our teachers. They spoke to a couple parents. They gave a testimonial on how the leader has changed their child's life,' says Pippin. From classroom leadership roles to service projects, these schools are teaching more than math and reading. They're helping every child see themselves as capable and confident. Summers says that's evident as Kentucky leads the world in the accolade with 6 schools. Whitesville Elementary School was the first school in Daviess county to earn legacy school status last year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Early learning building students' academic, social skills
Jessica Fogle, who has been teaching kindergarten for two years at Sorgho Elementary School, was helping her students practice phonics Friday, a process that largely involved the students leading the instruction. A second student pointed out the letters of the alphabet as the students practiced the sounds, and another held aloft 'Baby Echo.' Later, a student helped trace out the vowel sounds as the students practiced. 'A lot of our curriculum is hands-on,' Fogle said. 'They get to play, but they don't realize they are learning, too.' Daviess County Public Schools began enrollment for next year's kindergarten and preschool classes on Monday. While schools will register students leading up to the start of the new school year, early registration allows the schools to better plan for their incoming classes of Pre-K and kindergarten. 'Our goal is to ensure people register (for preschool and kindergarten) early, so we can be prepared,' said Leslie Peveler, the district's director of elementary education. 'We need to know where they are going to be, and some of their needs.' People can register their children for preschool and kindergarten for the 2025-26 school year at People can also register at the school their children will attend, Fogle said. The kindergarten and preschool years are critical learning periods that set their course for the rest of their academic careers. 'It's really important. Not only are you teaching them the basics of academics, but (also) you're also teaching soft skills' such as listening and collaboration, Fogle said. With about 16 students in her classroom, Fogle and the class' instructional aide have their hands full. The work can be challenging, but has its rewards, Fogle said. 'I think it just takes a lot of patience,' Fogle said. 'I think most teachers go to school because they love kids. It's hard, but you're teaching them,' and are preparing them to go out in the world, she said. '(It takes) a lot of patience and a lot of love,' Fogle said. There are academic standards for preschool students, such as learning the sounds of the alphabet and to count up to 20. Memory is also part of the curriculum with students tested on how well they can retell a story. Sorgho has students from numerous countries, so the teachers are also helping students learn English, Fogle said. The young international students, even those who arrive unable to speak any English, learn quickly. 'When they get here, they just pick (English) up,' Fogle said.'They love it, and they love to come to school.' When the students move on to first grade, Fogle stays in touch with her former students, she said. 'They are always on your mind,' she said. 'I'll go down to the first grade room and check on them, and they'll come and talk to me about their day.' In addition to academics, part of preschool and kindergarten is teaching students 'to be a better person,' Fogle said. 'The hardest part of the day is (thinking), 'am I doing enough?' ' Fogle said. 'Even sending them home, I hope I just gave them what they needed. At the end of the day, you love these children as your own. I consider these kids my kids, too.' Fogle said of her students: 'I just love really making a difference. I love being that person for them. I love helping build that character they need, and teaching them how to be a lifelong learner.'
