Mira Sorvino to star as Roxie Hart in ‘Chicago' on Broadway

NEW YORK (AP) — Mira Sorvino is about to cross off something else on her bucket list. The Academy Award winner will make her Broadway debut this fall in 'Chicago,' playing the spotlight-seeking Roxie Hart from Sept. 15-Nov. 2 at the Ambassador Theatre. 'I have wished to dance and sing in a Broadway musical since I was a small child. To join 'Chicago,' such a legendary show, and such an incredible cast past and present, is literally a dream come true,' Sorvino said in a statement Wednesday. Set in the 1920s, 'Chicago' is a scathing satire of how show business and the media make celebrities out of criminals. It has Bob Fosse-inspired choreography, skimpy outfits and killer songs such as 'All That Jazz' and 'Cell Block Tango.' Sorvino won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a Critics' Choice Award for her performance in 'Mighty Aphrodite,' going on to such films as Spike Lee's 'Summer of Sam,' Antoine Fuqua's 'Replacement Killers,' Robert Redford's 'Quiz Show' and the cult comedy 'Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion.' 'Chicago' tells the story of Roxie, a housewife and dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to leave her. To avoid conviction, Roxie hires Chicago's slickest criminal lawyer to help her dupe the public, media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by creating shocking headlines. Roxie has been played by dozens of women since the show opened in 1996, including Pamela Anderson, Melanie Griffith, Ashley Graham. Christie Brinkley, Marilu Henner, Brooke Shields, Lisa Rinna, Gretchen Mol, Ashlee Simpson, Brandy Norwood, Jennifer Nettles and Robin Givens.

"Romy and Michele" Sequel in Works with Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino in Talks to Return

Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are in final talks to return for a sequel to the 1997 cult classic comedy 'Romy and Michele's High School Reunion.' The upcoming movie will be directed by Tim Federle, who created 'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' and wrote and directed the Disney+ original movie 'Better Nate Than Never.' Original film screenwriter Robin Schiff and producer Laurence Mark are also set to return for the sequel. Barry Kemp will also produce. 'Romy and Michele's High School Reunion' follows two unsuccessful 28-year-olds who invent fake careers to impress their former classmates at their 10-year high school reunion. Schiff created the characters for her 1988 stage play 'Ladies' Room,' which starred a pre-'Friends' fame Kudrow. The actress was joined by Oscar-winner Sorvino in the 1997 film, which was a moderate box office hit. For decades, Sorvino and Kudrow have fielded questions about a follow-up movie, however, in 2022, they delighted fans by teaming up to present at the SAG Awards (wearing pink and blue suits that evoked Romy and Michele's metallic minidresses), then confirming in separate interviews that a sequel was 'closer than ever' to getting a green light. 'There's nothing official to report, but I can unofficially hint that we're closer than we've ever been to getting something to happen,' Sorvino said in an appearance on Today. The same day, Kudrow was interviewed on Sirius XM and revealed Schiff was 'thinking about it and coming up with something. Isn't that thrilling?'.
