"Romy and Michele" Sequel in Works with Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino in Talks to Return

Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are in final talks to return for a sequel to the 1997 cult classic comedy 'Romy and Michele's High School Reunion.' The upcoming movie will be directed by Tim Federle, who created 'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' and wrote and directed the Disney+ original movie 'Better Nate Than Never.' Original film screenwriter Robin Schiff and producer Laurence Mark are also set to return for the sequel. Barry Kemp will also produce. 'Romy and Michele's High School Reunion' follows two unsuccessful 28-year-olds who invent fake careers to impress their former classmates at their 10-year high school reunion. Schiff created the characters for her 1988 stage play 'Ladies' Room,' which starred a pre-'Friends' fame Kudrow. The actress was joined by Oscar-winner Sorvino in the 1997 film, which was a moderate box office hit. For decades, Sorvino and Kudrow have fielded questions about a follow-up movie, however, in 2022, they delighted fans by teaming up to present at the SAG Awards (wearing pink and blue suits that evoked Romy and Michele's metallic minidresses), then confirming in separate interviews that a sequel was 'closer than ever' to getting a green light. 'There's nothing official to report, but I can unofficially hint that we're closer than we've ever been to getting something to happen,' Sorvino said in an appearance on Today. The same day, Kudrow was interviewed on Sirius XM and revealed Schiff was 'thinking about it and coming up with something. Isn't that thrilling?'.

Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino in Final Talks for ‘Romy and Michele' Sequel

Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are officially reuniting. The actresses are in final talks to reprise their roles for a Romy and Michele's High School Reunion sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter. They are also set to serve as executive producers on the project. The original 1997 film, which follows two unaccomplished women who invent fake careers to impress their classmates at their 10-year high school reunion, became a cult classic hit. Sorvino, who played Romy, said in a November interview with People that all of the original cast is set to return for the sequel. 'This is all pending, them making deals, them saying yes, but they're all in there,' said the Oscar winner. Many of the heavy-hitters from the production team are returning as well. Robin Schiff, who wrote the first movie, also penned the script for the second. Sorvino said Schiff wrote an 'amazing funny script, which checks all the boxes for all the fans.' Laurence Mark, who produced the first film, will also be coming back. Tim Federle is attached to direct the film, which is expected to start production in June. Federle created High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which aired on Disney+. Romy and Michele's High School Reunion originated as a stage play, written by Schiff and starring Kudrow, as part of The Groundlings. The sequel will be distributed by the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios.
