Oman's first waste-to-energy project takes shape in Barka

Muscat – In a significant step toward sustainable development and circular economy goals, Oman is advancing its first large-scale waste-to-energy (WTE) project in Barka, located in the South Batinah governorate. The strategic initiative, being developed with an investment of RO2.9mn, marks a shift from conventional landfill-based waste disposal to energy recovery through advanced incineration technology. The project aims to process approximately 3,000 tons of municipal solid waste daily, with a projected power generation capacity ranging between 95 and 100 megawatts. Expected to begin commercial operations in the second quarter of 2031, the facility will contribute to reducing around 302,000 tons of waste annually. It will also supply an estimated 260 GWh of renewable electricity per year to the national grid, reinforcing Oman's commitment to green energy solutions. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources says the project is a cornerstone in achieving Oman Vision 2040 goals related to environmental protection, sustainability, and efficient resource utilization. It also aligns with broader efforts to cut carbon emissions and reduce reliance on landfills. Once operational, the Barka waste-to-energy plant is expected to deliver far-reaching environmental and economic benefits, including job creation, innovation in waste management, and enhanced energy security. © Apex Press and Publishing Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. Oman: South Batinah offers over 100 plots for investment to drive growth

Rustaq – In a major step towards enhancing economic growth and food security, South Batinah is offering more than 100 plots of land for investment as part of its drive to meet the objectives of Oman Vision 2040. The initiative aims to attract quality investments across multiple sectors, including agriculture, industry, education and commercial services. Haider bin Abdul Hadi al Lawati, Director General of Housing and Urban Planning in South Batinah, said the governorate is seeing strong interest from investors, thanks to an attractive business environment and diverse investment opportunities being made available. 'In the first half of 2025, we've added 40 new agricultural plots and are preparing 54 more for industrial, commercial and mixed-use projects,' Lawati said. 'These plots will soon be offered through the Tatwir platform to ensure transparency and easy access for investors.' He informed that six special plots have been set aside for private schools, fuel stations and business incubators. Additionally, industrial land in the wilayat of Musannah will be released under the 'Choose and Invest' initiative, supporting local entrepreneurs and SMEs. In 2024, the governorate offered 40 agricultural plots, five plots for specialised services, and 80 commercial and industrial plots via public auction. Thirty-five industrial plots were distributed in Musannah under the Choose and Invest initiative. Lawati added that land distribution continues to follow updated urban planning guidelines with focus on digital platforms and sustainable practices to ensure balanced growth while preserving natural resources. In the agricultural sector, usufruct land contracts are playing a vital role in supporting food security. Initiatives such as greenhouse farming, aquaculture and livestock production are helping reduce reliance on imports and improve national self-sufficiency. The move to offer land for investment is part of broader efforts under Oman Vision 2040 to diversify the economy, create job opportunities and foster sustainable development across the sultanate. © Apex Press and Publishing Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. Oman: South Batinah records over 17 tonnes of wheat production this year

Muscat – South Batinah governorate has produced more than 17 tonnes of wheat this year, with over 80 feddans of land cultivated across its wilayats, according to the Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries, and Water Resources. The initiative is part of the government's ongoing efforts to enhance food security in the sultanate, with wheat identified as a strategic crop. Eng Abdullah bin Saif al Saidi, Director of the Agricultural Development Department in South Batinah, said the ministry has implemented several programmes to support wheat cultivation. 'These include research to develop wheat varieties suitable for Oman's climate, as well as providing farmers with seeds and post-planting technical supervision,' he said. More than 2.5 tonnes of wheat seeds were distributed to over 60 farmers across the governorate. Saidi added that the 'Wheat Harvest' programme remains one of the ministry's most important services, offered free of charge. It provides harvesting equipment and specialised staff to assist farmers during the harvest season. Eng Sawsan bint Talib al Khanbashiya, head of the Date Palm and Plant Production Section, said the wheat seed project plays a key role in advancing food security efforts in the region. 'Our team continues to follow up with farmers through field visits and technical guidance throughout the planting season until harvest,' she said. The ministry's support for wheat cultivation reflects a wider national strategy to promote sustainable agriculture and ensure long-term food resilience. © Apex Press and Publishing Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc.
