Firefighters help rescue fox stuck in Luton garden

A fire service helped rescue a juvenile fox that got stuck between a garden shed and a RSPCA were called to a property in Luton on 1 July to help the trapped animal rescue officer Mark Richardson tried to remove the fox by covering him in sunflower oil while easing him out of the gap, but the tightness of the space meant the risk of injuring the animal was too sought help from Stopsley Community Fire Station, which used hydraulic tools to open the space, allowing the officer to grab the fox. South Essex Wildlife Hospital then treated the animal's injuries to the groin area. The hospital released him back into the wild after a month of Richardson said: "It's the best part of the job seeing an animal you have helped to rescue be rehabilitated and released back into the wild. "After a month of care and a four-hour round trip, the fox didn't wait around to say thank you, as he quickly disappeared into the bushes. "This was a great, happy ending to a team effort rescue." Wildlife hospital issues fundraising plea for 'vital' seal rehab pool repairs

SOUTH Essex Wildlife Hospital has issued a plea to residents for support in repairing its "vital" seal rehab pool. The hospital operates on of the UK's few specialist facilities for orphaned seal pups and is currently experiencing issues with the pool's filtration system. Residents have been asked to contribute whatever they can to the hospital's JustGiving page in the hopes of raising the much-needed repair costs. We're now on WhatsApp! Join our new channel at to get all the latest breaking news and exclusive stories delivered straight to your phone. A spokesperson for the hospital said: "Helping injured, orphaned or abandoned seal pups is one of our specialties here at South Essex Wildlife Hospital. "Very few places in the UK are equipped to give these beautiful creatures a second chance and we will do everything we can to help our fishy friends get back to the big blue sea, but we need your help to do so. "Sadly, our seal rehab pool filtration system is in urgent need of repairs. This system is absolutely vital in keeping these young pups healthy and we just can't get them back to the wild without it. "Please can you help us give these little animals the chance they deserve. We honestly can't do it without you and even £1 helps so much." You can support the fundraiser at

Fox cub found choking to death in football net

A baby fox was found to be slowly choking to death after it got tangled up in a football net. It became trapped at a school in Basildon, Essex, and was unable to breathe properly or escape, said South Essex Wildlife Hospital. Lead vet Tom Linsel was called to the scene last week and managed to cut it free just in time. Following treatment, it was released back to its mother in the wild. The school was told to lift its nets when not in use, so wildlife could pass through easily. Follow Essex news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X.
