Tom Latham century leads Warwickshire into quarter-finals

Teenager Farhan Ahmed finished the innings with a hat-trick as part of a haul of five for 25 as Nottinghamshire beat Lancashire by four wickets. Ahmed helped skittle already-qualified Lancashire for 126 before Tom Moores struck 75 to help Nottinghamshire to 127 for six with almost five overs remaining, but they failed to advance. Alex Lees' 101 not out saw Durham to a nine-wicket victory at home to Northamptonshire with both sides safely through to the quarter-finals, the hosts reaching their target of 204 for the loss of a single wicket. Graham Clark also chipped in with 79, whilst earlier Matthew Potts had taken three for 27 as Northamptonshire slipped below their opponents into fourth in the final standings. Victory for Durham ended Leicestershire's hopes of squeezing into the top four, a two-wicket defeat to Yorkshire for whom Abdullah Shafique hit 64 as the Foxes were all out for 185 to finish seventh. Results in the South Group meant a quarter-final spot for Hampshire who watched on nervously following defeat in their final match on Thursday. Paul Walter's earlier half-century had helped Essex to 172 for six but Kent easily chased down their total with Harry Finch also knocking 64. That meant Glamorgan missed out on the top four despite Dan Douthwaite's four for 22 helping them to a 52-run win over Middlesex. Kian Carlson's 49 off 19 balls saw his side to 184 for nine before Middlesex fell well short on 132 despite Kane Williamson's fine 63. Group-winners Surrey signed off with a seven-run win over Sussex, Will Jacks' hundred the outstanding performance with the bat as the table toppers reached 204 for five before Sam Curran took four for 18 to edge out Sussex. Somerset, who were already assured of their place in the quarter-finals, were 16-run victors over Gloucestershire with Ben Green hitting 36 not out.

Why all-rounder Danny swapped Rovers for cricket as part of sporting family

Danny Lamb is an all-rounder in more ways than one. The Sussex batter and seam bowler was eyeing a career as a goalkeeper with Blackburn Rovers as a teenager. He will quite happily grab a Vitality Blast quarter-final spot with both hands if the opportunity arises. Sussex Sharks host Surrey at a packed Hove this evening (6.30pm) with the significance of the final South Group fixture increased by a win at Gloucestershire yesterday. Lamb held his nerve to hit 16 runs off five balls and carry Sharks to a dramatic last-ball four-wicket win. Chasing a victory target of 186, Sharks required 15 runs off the final over, bowled by David Payne. Lamb clubbed three boundaries, including one off the final ball, to stun a large Festival audience into silence and end Gloucestershire's defence of the title they lifted last year. Both Danny and his sister Emma have had a big cricketing week, the latter playing for England. So they are a good symbol of how men's and women's games are coming together in the Blast this season. But, while they shared a love of sport, they were not exactly bowling at each other in the back garden all day as kids. Danny said: 'We did a lot together but not as much as what people think. I wanted to be a footballer! 'I always enjoyed my cricket but I was at Blackburn Rovers until I was 16. 'I wanted to be a goalkeeper. I wasn't quite tall enough - or good enough, to be honest. 'The decision was made for me, really, but I think it has worked out well. 'I don't know what level I would have got to. 'We always played different sports. I'd say we are both pretty good all-rounders in that respect, pardon the cricketing pun. 'I played a lot of tennis growing up. A lot of badminton, netball. 'I wouldn't say it was all on cricket from the start. 'It just sort of went that way. 'But I was always on the academy pathway at Lancashire so I always maintained a good level with that.' Whatever the permutations of the South Group, Sussex would love to sign off with a Hove win. Their two previous Friday games at the 1st Central County Ground have both been big disappointments at a unique venue which should offer home advantage. Lamb said: 'It feels quite intimate. The crowd is really on top of you and that should be a home advantage – and it is. 'When they are up and about, it really gets the lads firing.'

Now only wins will do for Sussex in Blast

Danny Lamb says it is win or bust for Sussex if they are to progress in the Vitality Blast. Sharks are four points off the top four going into their final two games. They visit Gloucestershire tonight and end their South Group campaign at home to Surrey tomorrow. Sussex looked well set for a quarter-final spot when they won at Kent recently. But four successive defeats now leave them as outsiders to make the cut. All-rounder Lamb said: 'It's hard to put your finger on what has gone wrong really. 'We had a really good start and for whatever reason, I'm not even sure what it is, we have lost some momentum in the last few games and just not got it quite right. 'I don't think much has changed. 'The South Group is very competitive anyway. 'I don't think there is much between certainly five of the teams. 'But a good back-end here could set us up for a really good knockout stage.' Somerset and Surrey have secured the top two positions in the group, and therefore the home quarter-finals. Gloucestershire, like Sussex, badly need a win from their clash at Cheltenham College (4pm).

Lancashire climb above Durham with tense three-wicket Vitality Blast victory

Durham started the day atop the group and elected to bat first but runs were hard to come by and they were just 46 for three when Alex Lees was caught and bowled by Chris Green. Colin Ackermann top-scored with 42 as Durham limped to 155 from their 20 overs but they would have been happy to have England pair Phil Salt and Jos Buttler back in the shed early in the chase at 42 for two. The game remained in the balance as Lancs continued to plug away at the runs but Durham in turn took wickets at regular intervals courtesy of Callum Parkinson, Matthew Potts, James Neesham and Nathan Sowter but Green's match-winning 31 from 16 balls gave Lancashire victory. Surrey earned a resounding 67-run victory over Somerset in a battle of the top two in the South Group. They were forced to bat by Somerset but put on a pleasing display in the first innings. Will Jacks scored a half-century and fellow English pair Jason Roy and Dan Lawrence posted above 30 to help Surrey to 201 which Somerset did not make a mark on, being bowled out for 134. Northamptonshire climbed to second in the North Group with a comprehensive 64-run win over fellow quarter-final chasers Warwickshire. Matthew Breetzke clubbed 85 from 40 balls while David Willey and Ricardo Vasconcelos both struck half-centuries as the Steelbacks put a mammoth 240 on the board the halfway point. Warwickshire openers Alex Davies and Tom Latham tried to get on top of the run rate but both succumbed in doing so. Sam Hain hit a half-century but in the end they fell way short of their target. Northamptonshire earned a win over fellow quarter-final chasers Warwickshire (Mike Egerton/PA) Hampshire all but secured their place in the knockouts with a six-wicket victory over Sussex, who saw their own hopes take a huge blow. After Sussex posted 167 on the board, the Hawks were completely dominant with the bat thanks largely to James Vince who came two runs short of a century but was unbeaten on 98 from 49 balls which saw Hampshire home with 16 balls to spare. Kent boosted their hopes of a top-four finish with a seven-wicket win over Middlesex. Middlesex would have been questioning their decision to bat after Kane Williamson fell in the eighth over at 43 for three but Leus Du Plooy's 68 propelled them to 160. However, Kent were always in control in their run chase. Tawanda Muyeye's 59 alongside solid scores from Harry Finch (36) and Joe Denly (46) moved Kent to fourth in the South Group. Ethan Brookes scored a half-century to help steer Worcestershire to a six-wicket victory over Leicestershire. Leicestershire posted 173 at the end of their 20 overs, Tom Taylor ripped through Worcestershire's top order but the hosts fought back courtesy of Ben Cox's unbeaten 70 from 44 balls which helped them post a defendable target. However, Worcestershire were imperious in their run chase and posted over 50 in their first six overs. Tom Scriven aimed to pull Leicestershire back in the contest with the wickets of Brett D'Oliveira and Kashif Ali but Brookes' unbeaten 56 took Worcestershire to a sixth win of the campaign. Glamorgan's hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals took a blow after they suffered a 40-run loss to lowly Gloucestershire. Ben Charlesworth's 55 from 44 balls propelled Gloucestershire to 175 but Glamorgan never got going with their run chase and were reduced to 95 for five after 11 overs. Marchant de Lange's four wickets helped limit Glamorgan who were bowled out for 135 after just 18.1 overs. Derbyshire claimed an eight-wicket victory over fellow Blast strugglers Yorkshire at Headingley. The Falcons put the home side on the back foot from the off as Allah Ghazanfar and Ben Aitchison claimed two wickets apiece to reduce Yorkshire to 17 for four but Dom Bess' half-century helped his side up to 150. The run chase was a formality for Derbyshire. Aneurin Donald and Wayne Madsen went past 50 while Caleb Jewell remained unbeaten on 41 to help them to a win.

Dan Lawrence hits unbeaten ton as Surrey earn six-wicket win against Glamorgan

Batting at number five, Lawrence was unbeaten on 120 – he hit five sixes and 12 fours – to help Surrey close on 224 for four in pursuit of Glamorgan's 222 for six, with five balls to spare. Glamorgan pair Colin Ingram (69) and Asa Tribe (56) had both made quick-fire half-centuries for the visitors, but Lawrence, who was undefeated after facing 54 balls, sealed Surrey's win with a straight six. In the North Group, top two Durham and Lancashire both lost – the latter losing to Roses rivals Yorkshire in Manchester for the first time since 2014 – while wins for the Bears and Northamptonshire left all four on 28 points. Nottinghamshire bowler Matthew Montgomery took four for 30 to help bowl Durham all out for 156 at Trent Bridge before Jack Haynes hit an unbeaten 55 for the home side, who cruised to 159 for three in reply. Bears pair Hassan Ali (three for 32) and Danny Briggs (three for 37) were in dominant form with the ball in their side's 23-run win against Worcestershire, who mustered 153 all out, while chasing 177 for victory. Northamptonshire's Matthew Breetzke (93 off 45), captain David Willey (53) and Saif Zaib, who smashed 53 not out off 20 deliveries, all starred with the bat in their side's 13-run win against Derbyshire. The trio helped Northants reach 237 for four and although Derbyshire opener Aneurin Donald thrashed a 21-ball 71, the visitors fell 13 runs short.
