SALT LAKE CITY () — A South Jordan man previously convicted for possessing over 500 files of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) has been sentenced to federal prison for his crime. Daniel David Egli, 51, of South Jordan, was convicted on Nov. 4, 2024, for possessing CSAM while on federal supervision for another charge during 2021. Senior U.S. District Court Judge Tena Campbell sentenced him today. Egli was sentenced to 210 months' imprisonment — over 19 years. He will also serve a lifetime term of supervised release, meaning that he will be required to check in with a probation officer for the rest of his life, and can be sent back to prison if he violates the terms of his release. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Repeat sex offender found guilty for third time in federal child exploitation case According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office District of Utah (UAO), Egli's parole officer discovered that Egli had a laptop and smartphone, as well as other electronic devices he was not permitted to have as part of his release conditions. When Egli's devices were reviewed, it was discovered that he had accessed, viewed, and possessed nearly 500 files of CSAM. He was charged with the offense in 2022 and convicted in 2024. He had a history of child exploitation and had been convicted of the same offense in 2004 and again in 2010. 'Egli is a repeat offender of child exploitation, and he has shown a complete lack of remorse and rehabilitation in his continued behavior,' Acting U.S. Attorney Felice John Viti of the District of Utah is quoted in the release. 'Community safety is a priority of the U.S. Attorney's Office, and our law enforcement partners. Our community and the children in it are safer with Egli behind bars.' Charges are allegations only. Visitor numbers to ancient city of Petra slump during Gaza war
Jordan has experienced a sharp drop in visitors to its ancient city of Petra and other sites since war broke out in Gaza almost two years ago. Figures released by the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority show visitors dropping from almost 1.2 million in 2023 to fewer than 460,000 last year – a decrease of about 61 per cent. "We feel the repercussions of the aggression on Gaza every day, especially for providers of tourism services," Abdul Razzaq Arabiyat, the director of the national tourism board, told TV channel Al Mamlaka. Mr Arabiyat said tourism from Europe and North America has hit a record low, dealing a devastating blow to the hotel industry and tour operators around Petra, in Jordan's south. According to figures from the Petra tourism authority carried by official media, 32 hotels have had to shut down and almost 700 people have lost their jobs. Although Jordan does not share a border with Gaza, it is among many countries across the Middle East affected by the war between Israel and Hamas. The kingdom has worked with the UAE to fly food into Gaza and sought to use its diplomatic influence to bring about a ceasefire. Petra, famous for its stunning temples hewn from rose-pink cliff faces, is a Unesco world heritage site. The Jordanian economy relies on revenues from the kingdom's tourism sector, which accounts for 14 per cent of gross domestic product. Jordan's tourism board had hoped to keep numbers steady from a pre-war figure of 5.4 million visitors a year across the country. Mr Arabiyat told The National in May 2024 that "we need to at least maintain this number this year, and we hope it will not decrease". Last August, it was revealed that Middle East plane tickets issued in a 10-day period during the height of summer were seven per cent down year on year, with Jordan and Lebanon suffering the biggest drops.

Jordan's tourism impacted by Gaza war, Petra visitors down by 61 percent: Official
Jordan has seen a decrease in the number of tourists visiting its famed ancient city of Petra and other sites since the Gaza war began in October 2023, according to officials. Although Jordan does not border the Gaza Strip, it has been among several countries across the region impacted by the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Figures released by the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority and reported Monday by the official Al-Mamlaka TV showed the number of visitors slashed by 61 percent, from 1,174,137 in 2023 to 457,215 last year. 'We feel the repercussions of the aggression on Gaza every day, especially for providers of tourism services,' Abdul Razzaq Arabiyat, the director of the national tourism board, told Al-Mamlaka on Friday. He said incoming tourism from Europe and North America has hit a record low, dealing a devastating blow to the hotel industry and tour operators around Petra, in Jordan's south. According to figures from the Petra tourism authority carried by official media, 32 hotels have had to shut down and nearly 700 people have lost their jobs.
