Southeast rivals Heat, Hawks to battle for 8th seed in East
The NBA's Southeast Division Invitational continues Friday night when the Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks duel in Georgia for the final berth in the Eastern Conference playoffs. The eighth-seed game in the Eastern play-in tournament features a Heat team coming off a win in an elimination affair against the Chicago Bulls and a Hawks club that already would be in the playoffs had it beaten the Orlando Magic on Tuesday. The winner will face the No. 1 seed Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round. Atlanta earned home court over Miami by virtue of finishing the season 40-42, three games better than the Heat. The Magic won the Southeast Division, but had only the seventh-best record in the East, so they also had to go the play-in route to advance. The Southeast, without a playoff team at regular season's end, is now assured of having two of the final eight, equaling the number from the Atlantic Division. The Central will have four. The home-court advantage no doubt is comforting to the Hawks, whose 120-95 shellacking at the hands of the Magic on Tuesday came on the road. All four games in the Hawks-Heat season series were won by the home team by double-figure amounts. Atlanta notched 10- and 12-point home wins in December and February; two days after Miami's second loss, the Heat rebounded with a 22-point victory at home before evening the season series with a 10-point triumph in March. Much has changed over the four months since Jalen Johnson and De'Andre Hunter combined for 54 points in Atlanta's December win. Neither will be in uniform for the Hawks on Friday night, with Johnson having suffered a season-ending shoulder injury, while Hunter was dealt at the trade deadline. Two constants, however, will be the importance of star guards Tyler Herro and Trae Young. Herro averaged 30.0 points in Miami's two home wins in the season series, after he suffered through one of his worst games of the year -- 11 points, 0-for-9 on 3-pointers -- when dogged by Hawks defensive ace Dyson Daniels on Feb. 24 in Atlanta. Herro was a driving force in the Heat's 109-90 win at Chicago on Wednesday, exploding for 38 points. With the star guard scoring 20 or more points in each of his last 10 regular-season games, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra admitted he had a good feeling about the Chicago visit. "We're only halfway there," Spoelstra said. "We didn't have the luxury of having the one game and then you're automatically in. Guys feel great about this win and really put a lot into this. This is not something that could just happen overnight. I feel like there's been some good things happening the last several weeks." Young was coming off a 36-point performance at Philadelphia in his last regular-season outing before the Orlando defense got under his skin Tuesday, limiting him to one 3-pointer in five attempts before he was ejected with two technical fouls. Young still finished with 28 points. Now it's bounce-back time against another defense that has been tough on him. He averaged only 13.0 points in the first three games against the Heat this season before going for 29 in the March meeting. "The importance of him keeping his cool, he addressed that already with our team," Hawks coach Quin Snyder said. "He's quick to own that." --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2023 - All Rights Reserved

Bengaluru molester: Accused Kerala man hid for 10 days with help from home guard girlfriend
Bengaluru: Interesting details have emerged regarding the arrest of the accused in the Bengaluru molestation case of two women. Police nabbed the accused, Santosh Daniel, 10 days after the incident, in Kerala, and it has emerged that his home guard girlfriend helped him hide. After the CCTV footage of the incident went viral, it became a major challenge for the police department to crack the case quickly. Sources reveal that the accused was in a live-in relationship with the female home guard. Daniel had sexually harassed two young women and then escaped -- later seen enjoying life in Kerala. The police have expressed shock over the home guard supporting the accused even after knowing about his act of molestation. Sources reveal that shockingly, the molester was guided by his lover home guard on how to avoid the police after the incident. Hiding with his lover in a resort Daniel was found having a good time at a resort in Kerala along with the female home guard at the time of arrest. To confuse the police, the accused kept moving across four to five jurisdictional limits in Bengaluru. He used a Dio scooter and rode through the lanes of Suddguntepalya, Tilaknagar, and MICO Layout police station limits. The police tracked his movements and launched a search operation. Just when they thought he was still in Bengaluru, he escaped to Kerala. He fled to Kerala with the female home guard from the Bellandur police station. Though she was married and had a child, the home guard had stayed away from her husband for Daniel, according to sources. She had been in a live-in relationship with Santosh for three years. The home guard allegedly helped Daniel escape. She even accompanied him to Kerala. Initially, the couple went to Hosur, in Tamil Nadu, located close to Bengaluru. Upon realising that the police were on their trail, they abandoned the bike in Hosur and fled to Salem. From Salem, they moved on to Kerala. Master plan Police sources stated that the home guard had devised a master plan to avoid detection by police. She advised Daniel not to use his mobile phone. She also suggested folding the scooter's number plate so it wouldn't be visible. When his movements could not be tracked, the special police teams continued their investigation in other directions. The accused, Daniel, was finally caught due to his traffic violation records. The police, who had gone through around 1,000 CCTV footage, identified him through a traffic violation. They traced the number plate of a bike found at the crime scene, which led them to the suspect. It was the bike that eventually revealed Daniel's identity. In the initial days of the investigation, the police traced the accused by tracking his bike. The police sought help from the transport department during the process. The Southeast Division police wrote to the transport department regarding the Dio scooter. They inquired about how many Dio scooters of that colour were registered in the city. With help from the transport department, the police got more clues about the accused. Final breakthrough Using the vehicle number, they traced Daniel's home address. The police knocked on the door of Daniel's house in Galburga Colony, Jayanagar. That's when they found out that the accused was on the run. Karnataka Police arrested the accused on April 14. Currently, Daniel is in police custody and being intensely interrogated. The police department has officially not revealed any details about the female home guard yet. According to the police, they examined over 1,600 CCTV footage clips to track down the accused. Two special teams were formed, and based on technical leads, they searched for him in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The investigation began based on a complaint filed by a resident, Lokesh Gowda. A video showing two young women being targeted by the accused in the early hours in a residential locality went viral on social media. The 17-second video showed two women walking down a deserted street flanked by houses on both sides. A tall, well-built man approaches them from behind, pushes one of the women aside, sexually harasses the other, and then escapes. The video also captures the visibly shaken women standing briefly to catch their breath before quickly leaving the scene. The incident occurred at around 2 a.m. on April 4 in the jurisdiction of the Sadduguntepalya police station. The video went viral on April 6.

What to watch when Magic host Hawks for NBA playoff spot
What to watch when Magic host Hawks for NBA playoff spot The Magic and Hawks met four times in the regular season, including Sunday's finale at Kia Center. Thanks to the NBA Play-In Tournament, the Southeast Division foes will have met three times in just seven days when it's all said and done. Advertisement Atlanta won the first meeting Feb. 10 on the road. That night, Franz Wagner (37) and Paolo Banchero (21) combined for 58 points but no other member of the Magic finished in double figures. Led by 19 points from All-NBA guard Trae Young, the Hawks had five double-digit scorers and five more reach at least 8 points. Ten days later in the first game out of the All-Star break, the Magic returned the favor at State Farm Arena. Orlando once again got big performances from Banchero (36 points) and Wagner (25), but this time the duo had help from Wendell Carter Jr. (9 points, 15 rebounds), Cole Anthony (17 points, 3 steals) and Anthony Black (10 points, 2 blocks). Advertisement This past week, the Magic kept their foot on the pedal and secured the regular season series against Atlanta with a high-scoring home win. Four of Orlando's starters posted 15 points or more, including Banchero who totaled a game-high 33. The Magic propelled themselves ahead thanks to a key second quarter and shot 50% from the field. 3 things to watch: 1. Supporting cast The stars are sure to shine at Kia Center between Banchero, Wagner and Young. Ultimately the success of their teams rides on their performances and slowing them down won't be easy. Rotation players such as veteran guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope for Orlando and No. 1 pick Zaccharie Risacher for Atlanta could tilt the contest one way or the other. Advertisement Entering the final two games of the regular season, the Magic were 9-3 when Caldwell-Pope scored 15 points or more. The Hawks were 7-1 when Risacher crossed 20 points. 2. Long-range shooting Entering the final weekend of the regular season, the Hawks shot 35.7% from 3-point range. The Magic were a league-low 31.6%. Atlanta, however, has a stronger chance at performing above their season average from distance by comparison. The Hawks shot 40% or better 27 times from downtown and went 19-8 in those instances. The Magic shot 40% or better only 12 times and went 9-3. Led by Young, who averaged 8.4 attempts in the regular season, the Hawks could have upper hand from 3. 3. Possession battle In what could be a low-scoring physical contest, taking care of the ball will be key. Advertisement The Hawks average the fifth-most turnovers (15.5) while the Magic are middle of the pack at No. 16 league-wide (14.1). Atlanta turned the ball over at least 18 times in 22 games and it was 6-16 when that happened. Orlando only had 12 such instances with 18-plus turnovers and was 4-8. Magic, Hawks meet again, this time as East's top play-in seeds
The Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic are on the play-in route with intentions of earning a first-round matchup with the defending champion Boston Celtics as they vie for the No. 7 position in the Eastern Conference playoffs Tuesday in Florida. The regional rivals split their season series 2-2, with each one winning once on the other's home court. They finished as the top two teams in a lackluster Southeast Division, separated by just one game. The eighth-seeded Hawks will be participating in the play-in tournament for the fourth consecutive season. They advanced from play-in status to the eight-team conference playoffs in 2022 and 2023, before getting eliminated as the No. 10 seed by the Chicago Bulls last April. Atlanta enters this year's playoff qualifier tied with the Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Pelicans for most wins in the five-year history of the play-in event with three. Of the NBA's 30 teams, 21 have participated in a play-in game. Orlando is participating for the first time. The Hawks and Magic have faced each other three times in a playoff series, with Atlanta winning the most recent 4-2 in 2011. The teams met twice in the final week of the regular season, including Sunday, when both teams were locked into their play-in position at Nos. 7 and 8 in the conference standings. The Hawks won that game 117-105. Their matchup last Tuesday, on the other hand, helped Orlando take a big step toward the division title. Paolo Banchero had 33 points for the Magic in a 119-112 home win. Orlando was just 32-38 on March 19 before finishing the regular season on a 9-3 run. Banchero was the NBA's eighth-leading scorer over that stretch, with 28.2 points per game on 47.6-percent shooting. Banchero missed 34 games early in the season and star sidekick Franz Wagner sat out 20 straight at midseason, both with torn right obliques. The absences created the big hole from which the Magic have recovered to finish at .500. "For us to be in this position, playing great basketball at the end of the season ... I think we're in a great position, ready to take care of the Hawks Tuesday at home," veteran Jonathan Isaac said. Atlanta bounced back from its loss at Orlando to win its final three games and edge out the Chicago Bulls for eighth place in the East. That will give the Hawks two shots at making the playoffs if needed, since Tuesday's loser gets an opportunity to host the winner of Wednesday's game between the Bulls and Miami Heat on Friday. The Hawks won their final two road games to secure their No. 8 seed. Trae Young had a double-double in each road victory when he averaged 30.0 points with 11.5 assists. Both teams scored at least 105 points in all four meetings in the regular season, but Young foresees more of an emphasis on defense in Tuesday's game. "We know it's gonna be a physical game; they're kind of known for being a physical team," Young said. "We know they're not necessarily the best offensive team in the league. But they are one of the best, if not the best, defensive team in the league. "So there's definitely different styles in our game. We need to figure out a way to make sure that we play our game." --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2023 - All Rights Reserved
