Curt Cignetti retains key member of Indiana football staff pursued by Big Ten rival
BLOOMINGTON — IU signed football's head strength coach, Derek Owings, to a new three-year deal on improved terms Friday, amid interest from Southern Cal. Owings, who has been with Curt Cignetti for several years dating back to Cignetti's time at James Madison, has routinely been described by his coach as among the most important members of Cignetti's staff. As recently as Thursday, during an appearance at a Boys and Girls Club fundraiser in Bloomington, Cignetti called Owings — whose official title is director of athletic performance, football — 'cutting edge' in his approach to strength and conditioning. Owings attended that fundraiser with Cignetti. And more than once during the 2024 season, which for Indiana ended in the College Football Playoff, Cignetti cited Owings as a key pillar to his program's success. All of which led USC to express serious interest in tempting Owings west to join Lincoln Riley's reclamation project in University Park. Since November, Indiana has inked Cignetti to a robust eight-year contract and handed out more lucrative deals to nearly all his assistants. Owings himself got a raise to $635,000 per year in that round of new contracts last winter. His refreshed contract now becomes the latest example of that commitment.

Auburn transfer Chad Baker-Mazara commits to USC
Former Auburn guard/forward Chad Baker-Mazara announced Monday that he has committed to Southern Cal for the 2025-26 season. Baker-Mazara, 25, made the announcement in a post to X. Baker-Mazara spent two seasons at Auburn and was a key component on the Tigers' Final Four team this past season. Baker-Mazara is benefiting from a temporary waiver allowing athletes who played a year outside the NCAA -- in Baker-Mazara's case, junior college -- to have an additional season of NCAA eligibility. He played one season apiece at Duquesne and San Diego State before spending 2022-23 at Northwest Florida State. In his 119 career games at the Division I level, he has averaged 9.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.0 steals per game. His best season was 2024-25, when he started 34 of 38 games for the Tigers and put up 12.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

South Carolina's 2026 recruiting class troubles continue
South Carolina's 2026 recruiting class troubles continue The 2026 recruiting class isn't off to a great start for South Carolina. After losing 4-star linebacker Rodney Colton and 4-star quarterback Landon Duckworth, another highly touted prospect has decommitted from the University of South Carolina. On Tuesday, 4-star cornerback Peyton Dyer announced his decommitment from the Gamecocks. At 6-foot, 190 pounds, Dyer is rated a .9016 4-star, according to 247Sports Composite score, putting him slightly out of the top 300 at No. 328 in the nation. He ranked No. 27 in his class and the No. 39 player in Georgia. With at least 35 offers, the Duluth, Ga., native will have a bevy of other offers to choose from, including Georgia, Southern Cal, Auburn, Duke, Florida, and Florida State, to name a few. South Carolina still has two 4-star recruits left in its 2026 recruiting class, with CB J'Zavien Currence and offensive tackle Zyon Guiles. In total, the Gamecocks have five commits left, ranking as the 28th class in the country, per 247Sports.

Augusta National Women's Amateur fans can enjoy many of the Masters famous concessions
Augusta National Women's Amateur fans can enjoy many of the Masters famous concessions EVANS, Ga. — Southern Cal's Jasmine Koo waited an entire year to get her hands on a peach ice cream sandwich. She didn't get one last year at the Augusta National Women's Amateur and put it on her priority list for 2025. Fans who come out of the first two rounds of ANWA at Champions Retreat have the chance to indulge in the most famous concessions in sport, even if they can't step foot on the iconic course. The egg salad sandwich and pimento cheese, for example, are still only $1.50. The Georgia peach ice cream sandwich is a cool $3. While it's a more limited menu than what's on offer at Augusta National Golf Club, even the green packaging is the same. All drinks are $2 and nothing on the list exceeds $3. This marks the sixth edition of the ANWA. A cut will be made after two rounds, and then the entire field heads over to Augusta National to play a practice round on Friday before Saturday's final round.
