Bradford city centre regeneration plans take step forward
Plans to double the size of Bradford city centre, creating an area described as "one of the biggest regeneration sites in the UK", have taken a major step a forum in Leeds on Wednesday, Bradford Council announced that global consultancy firm Arup had been commissioned to create the "master plan" for the city's proposed Southern scheme involves redeveloping the area between Leeds Road and Manchester Road for new housing, businesses, shops and infrastructure, including tram stations and a possible new "through" railway station for the city.A council spokesman said: "This is a transformational opportunity, bringing with it huge economic and social benefits." The plans for the Southern Gateway were originally announced at this year's UK Real Estate Investment and Infrastructure Forum, according to the Local Democracy Reporting master plan, which is expected to be created over 12 months, would look at the requirements of the development, taking into account the city's heritage and need for "landscape enhancements".The project includes plans for £4.5bn of transport upgrades, including trams and a new Bradford railway station. 'Unlock opportunities' Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, leader of Bradford Council, said: "This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will drive growth for the district, strengthen supply chains, boost productivity and attract private investment, ensuring Bradford thrives in a competitive landscape."The master plan would create "a tangible, detailed proposal from street level right the way up to how the new district will work within the city as a whole", she said."It will be key in terms of attracting future investment."Hinchliffe also highlighted that Bradford was the largest city without direct access to the major north-south railway lines."A new 'through' rail station in the Southern Gateway is critical to delivering the social and economic benefits of faster travel between regional economic hubs and also to London," she said."It will unlock opportunities for young people, with faster, easier access to jobs, apprenticeships, and universities."Niall Bourkem, associate director at Arup, said the master plan "reflects the city of Bradford's vision and commitment to creating an inclusive, sustainable, and resilient future"."With the future rail station and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority's mass transit plans providing momentum, the master plan will set out a clear path for new homes, jobs, cultural opportunities and improved connectivity," he explained. New Premier Inn will provide 'significant' economic boost to Carlisle
A PROPOSED new Premier Inn in Carlisle will give the city a 'significant' economic boost, according to the leader of Cumberland Council, Cllr Mark Fryer. Cumberland Council announced on Wednesday, May 14, that Whitebread PLC, the parent company of the Premier Inn hotel chain, had secured the former Central Plaza site in Carlisle and intends to turn it into a new 104-bedroom hotel. The 'Citadel View' site was previously home to the Grade II Central Plaza Hotel, which was demolished and cleared during 2020 after falling into disrepair in 2011. The council, in partnership with property consultant CBRE, initially sought proposals from potential developers to redevelop the Victoria Viaduct site back in 2023 and has now selected Whitbread as the preferred developer due to the 'strength of its proposal' for the regeneration of the site. Whitbread intends to submit a planning application for the new hotel this summer and is targeting an opening date before the end of 2028. He said: "This hotel will give Carlisle a significant economic boost, there is no doubt about that. "This will be the fifth Premier Inn in Carlisle, and that shows that Whitbread and others think that the city is a great place to invest. "This site has been sitting like this for probably ten years, and I knew that if we were to have a significant impact in places like Carlisle and all the other towns we have got, it is their type of project. "It has taken us two years to get here, and we have got a partner in Whitbread who are looking to develop the site out. The announcement of the impending development of the former Central Plaza comes in the midst of a number of projects being undertaken by Cumberland Council to regenerate Carlisle, including the ongoing Market Square and Greenmarket work. In addition, metres from the site of the proposed Premier Inn, Devonshire Street remains closed until June as the council moves into the next phase of the Southern Gateway project, with Cllr Fryer discussing the current dynamic of disruption and development in the city. Cllr Mark Fryer spoke to the press at the site on Wednesday (Image: Stuart Walker) He said: "It is an exciting time for the city... perversely, the more disruption you have is because you are more successful, and that is the key to it. "We have to limit the disruption, but also develop the city and improve it. "To economically develop the city, there is going to be some form of disruption, but in the end, it is always positive."

What's the latest on projects to redevelop Carlisle?
Motorists are set for eight weeks of disruption in Carlisle city centre as the latest stage of regeneration works begins. The junction between English Street and Devonshire Street will be shut for from 28 April for approximately eight weeks. As vehicle access to Devonshire Street is not possible, the street will be closed to vehicles during the period. Pedestrian access will be maintained, and businesses in the area will be open as usual throughout the works. The work is part of the next phase of the Southern Gateway project, which aims to improve the area for pedestrians and cyclists. It will enhance the pedestrian crossing area between The Cumberland Building Society, Santander, NatWest, and the former B&M site and will involve the installation of ducts, upgraded traffic signals, new kerbing and paving, and improved pedestrian crossings. It is part of a series of projects in the city. Here is the latest on the projects: Market Square and Green Market Plants, foliage and trees have been installed and drainage works are underway. This part of the work is expected to be completed by the end of May 2025. The overall project is expected to be finished by the summer. Carlisle Station Gateway project Plans for the Carlisle Station Gateway project were approved earlier this month. These changes include the creation of a new public space called George Square, along with better connections to nearby areas like the Turkish Baths and James Street. The first phase will see new landscaping, a pedestrian crossing over Water Street, and surface car parking on the old Pools and Staples sites. At a later date, the remaining Station Retail Park will be removed to create more parking. The design will reflect Carlisle's history, using brick, sandstone, and greenery to make the space more attractive and sustainable. The £27 million project is set to kick off in autumn 2025 after nearby road upgrades are completed. Wigton Road Works at Newby West Roundabout are now underway, with Peter Lane shut at the Newby West Roundabout side as part of improvement works for the Carlisle Southern Link Road project. No through route will be available, but residents of Peter Lane will still have access via Dalston Road. From 28 April 2025, the A595 north from Newby West Roundabout into Carlisle will be closed to all traffic between the roundabout and WRC Sales Limited. No through route will be available, but residents on Wigton Road will still have access from Carlisle. These works will run until the end of August 2025. The project will see a new, larger roundabout created, boosting traffic capacity and connectivity in the area. If you have any queries in relation to this temporary order, contact the Highways Hotline by calling 0300 373 3736 or via the Cumberland Council website. Carlisle Southern Link Road Cumberland Council says the road will be fully open by the end of 2025, with some sections of the route opening throughout this year. Contractors will remain on site completing landscaping works into 2026.
