Honor Flight of Southern Indiana holds meet & greet with veterans

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT)- In just over 48 hours, nearly 90 veterans will board a plane bound for Washington, D.C. as part of the latest Honor Flight of Southern Indiana. History through food: A look at the Robards Cookbook During their trip to the nation's capital, the veterans will visit their war memorials before returning to Evansville on Saturday night. Today, those veterans will gather at the C.K. Newsome Center for a meet and greet where they will receive their final marching orders, flight updates, and airport information before their trip. Upon the group's return from Washington, D.C., each veteran will receive dozens of pieces of mail, thanking them for their service. The public is also invited to the Evansville Regional Airport on Saturday evening to attend a welcome home parade, which will take place around 8 o'clock. LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Bellarmine's Chancellor Dugan has retired after winning more than 500 games in 34 seasons as a head coach. Dugan posted a 509-472 career record at three different schools. She went 159-73 at Southern Indiana from 1991-99, 161-217 at Florida Atlantic from 1999-2012 and 189-182 at Bellarmine from 2012-25. Advertisement She capped her college career by leading Bellarmine's transition into Division I. Bellarmine went 18-15 this season and won an Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament game for the first time in program history. Her Southern Indiana teams reached the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1995, 1997 and 1998. She then headed to the Division I ranks at Florida Atlantic and helped the Owls earn an NCAA Tournament berth in 2006. Bellarmine reached the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2016 and 2017 before starting its transition to Division I. ″Chancellor Dugan is another local coach who wanted to come home and make an impact in the community she grew up in, and she did just that with great energy and passion,' Bellarmine athletic director Scott Wiegandt said in a statement. 'Coach Dugan built a championship-caliber team in a short amount of time and returned it to the national stage in Division II. She was then steadfast in her commitment to seeing the D1 transition through and developing the program in the NCAA's highest level. Former USI player lands head coach position at FAU

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — Former Southern Indiana women's basketball player, LeAnn Freeland Curry, was named the new head women's basketball coach at Florida Atlantic University. In 29 seasons as a player, assistant coach and head coach, Freeland amassed a .727 win percentage and has only been a part of two losing seasons. She was also named the College Sports Magazine D-2 National Player of the Year in 1995. The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Director of Athletics. Freeland signed a 5-year contract following her stint as the head coach at Nova Southeastern University. Freeland shared the following statement after the announcement was made: 'It's an exciting day to be an Owl. I am truly honored and fired up for the opportunity to lead the women's basketball program at Florida Atlantic. I want to thank President Adam Hasner, Vice President and Director of Athletics Brian White and his search committee for believing in my vision for the program. Having lived and coached in this area for quite some time, I've seen first-hand the awesome things happening at Florida Atlantic. I know there is tremendous potential for the women's basketball program to be successful, and we will hit the court and recruiting trails as soon as possible to build a championship program.
