‘Market Greens' addresses food insecurity in local community
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local farmer's market is starting a new program to make sure everyone has access to fresh, healthy produce. The Binghamton Farmer's Market at Rec Park is beginning its Market Greens initiative this season. The nutrition-focused program will provide those in need with free coupons to exchange for items at the market. By providing no-questions-asked opportunities to get food, the project hopes to address food insecurity in the community. Vice President Bryce Farrell says she hopes the initiative will provide a third space for businesses and community members to connect. 'There are lots of vibrant businesses in food and agriculture. They want to get to know you, so you can come here and meet your farmer and know exactly where your eggs, your fruits, and your vegetables are coming from. You're developing relationships, you're improving your nutrition, and also just getting to spend some time outside with your neighbors,' said Farrell. The Binghamton Farmers Market is in its second year and takes place at Rec Park on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. through October 26. The market also has live music, arts and crafts, and nutritional workshops for kids and families. Visit the Binghamton Farmers Market Facebook page for more information. Southern Tier Singers present ‘Constellation'
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Southern Tier Singers Collective is exploring the spiritual connection between humans and the heavenly bodies. The group is presenting Constellation on Saturday. The show, which is inspired by the night sky, uses sacred and secular works to evoke feelings of peace, love, and compassion in audience members. Artistic Director William Culverhouse says our lives are a cosmic narrative, drawing inspiration from the beauty and mystery of the night sky. 'The whole concert is about the stars and how our lives are reflected in them, or how we see our lives reflected in the stars, the way we love, the way we hope, the way we dream, the way we fear, the way we aspire to be better people. All of that has a relationship with the stars and the night sky,' said Culverhouse. The show will take place at 7:30 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church, located 9 Leroy Street in Binghamton. The concert is free to attend, but voluntary donations will be accepted.
