Southwest Airlines bringing back flights to Florida airports, including this one at RSW

New Delta flight to Florida coming in December. Here's where, and when tickets are on sale

Southwest Floridians are getting more travel options for Christmas. Delta Air Lines is adding three new domestic routes on December 20, including one between Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), according to The Points Guy and verified by the airline. The new flights began as the Atlanta-based airline, which just celebrated its 100th birthday, announced last week that it plans to cut back on its growth plans this year due to "broad economic uncertainty around global trade," CEO Ed Bastian said. Airlines and airline tracker sites have reported drops in international and North American transborder flights into the U.S. since President Donald Trump has been cracking down on immigration and threatening major tariffs on other countries. All three of the new flights will run once a week, on Saturdays. There is no saver award availability on the routes so passengers using miles will need to pay Delta's dynamic SkyMiles redemption rates, The Points Guy reported. Tickets are available now. 'It's shaking everything up': International travel is declining, and it's costing the US Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) — Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, Florida New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) — Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) near Vail, Colorado New York City's LaGuardia Airport (LGA) — Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) in Montana Delta will deploy an Airbus A319 on the Utah-Fort Myers route and the New York-Montana one, and a Boeing 757-200 for the New York-Colorado flight. Neither are the type of plane used in Delta Flight 4819 that flipped upside down at a Toronto airport in February, catching on fire and injuring 18 of the 80 people on board. That was a Bombardier CRJ900, operated by a regional airline owned by Delta. From the Archives: The spies next door

This week's From the Archives comes from a March 6, 2021, article in the Naples Daily News by Harriet Howard Heithaus. The CIA became the tenants of a fish camp central building known as Cottage Manatee on the Gordon River where it proceeded to quietly supply the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. Urban legends abound about carloads of Cubans coming to the city to learn where they could join the ultimately failed attempt to wrest control from dictator Fidel Castro. But the person who has the facts is Lila Zuck, Naples historian. Her book, 'Naples, A Second Paradise' (Collier County Historical Research Center, Inc.: 2013; 1,005 pages) describes the groups' front as the Keys Navigation and Research Company. It largely funneled arms, hidden under the house, to the Cuban exile troops via PT boat. (The book is available from the Naples Historical Society at It was not hard for Naples to figure out what the true intent was, according to Zuck; one of the checks for its outboard motor repair was signed by the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley, Virginia. Later, on Marco Island, the U.S. Air Force openly built missile tracking stations at Caxambas Point to watch the skies around Cuba. Russia, then the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, had begun installing nuclear missile sites in Cuba, a prime vantage point from which to intimidate the U.S. The tensions built to an ultimatum Oct. 22, 1962, when President John F. Kennedy addressed the nation on television, announcing a naval blockade of Cuba and threatening military strikes to back it up. The blockade was to forestall any additional nuclear missiles arriving from the USSR. But there were already missiles there. Southwest Floridians doubtlessly felt the tension of the moment much more than most Americans, who were, to say it mildly, clenched. A week of diplomacy through the United Nations defused the situation: Russia would remove the missiles; we would not support another Bay of Pigs. Eventually both sites would become high-end homes and commercial developments where owners may be unaware that they're on historical ground. Pop open the umbrellas. How much rain is predicted for Naples, Collier County, Florida?

After an active 2024 hurricane season, Southwest Floridians were relieved when it ended and dry season set in. It hasn't rained much for a while in the Naples area. That's expected to change Monday. Prepare for some waves of rain in Naples and Collier County. The National Weather Service predicts showers before 10 a.m., with showers continuing and thunderstorms possible after 10. "Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall," NWS said on its website. The weather service seems confident it is going to rain. Its web site said Sunday evening that the chance of precipitation is 80% for the Naples area. The chance of rain continues at 70% Monday night. Rainfall amounts between 3/4 and 1 inch are possible Monday, the weather service predicted; 1/4 to 1/2 an inch of rain could fall Monday night. Accuweather's forecast showed the rain beginning Monday morning, around 7 a.m. The weather service's Miami office said Sunday that an area of low pressure will be moving over Florida. It said: "Model trends are coming into some agreement in regards to the system`s track, keeping its bulk over the southernmost portions of the peninsula and over the Keys. "This solution favors lower rainfall totals for South Florida and lower chances for thunderstorms overall as much of the instability looks to remain over the Keys." The agency said that thunderstorms and rain chances could increase though: "Given the disorganized nature of the low, there remains a low chance that the convection could push further north over our region, which would mean higher chances for thunderstorms and a more widespread rainfall event." With 1 to 2 inches predicted, some areas could expect localized flooding. While it's usually relatively dry this time of year, there's been less rainfall than normal for the first part of 2025. The last time it rained in Naples was Feb. 19, but that was just a tiny bit: .04 inches. It also rained a tad (.01 inches) on Feb. 3, but before that, it hadn't rained since .09 inches fell on Jan. 23. Monday's rain might help the area catch up a bit. A little more than a half of an inch fell in January, compared to a normal 1.68. February's normal is 2.06 inches. The weather service reports that parts of the Naples and Collier County area have been abnormally dry, with some parts experiencing moderate drought conditions. Here are 2024 rainfall totals for the Naples area: January: 2.21 inches, normal 1.68 inches February: 3.32 inches, normal 2.06 inches March 2024: 5.34 inches, normal 1.92 inches April: .09 inches, normal 2.50 inches May: .72 inches, normal 3.98 inches June: 17.03 inches, normal 9.62 inches July 14.47 inches, normal 9.78 inches August: 8.88 inches, normal 10.83 inches September: 5.82 inches, normal 10 inches October: data is missing, normal 3.92 inches November: .5 inches, normal 1.85 inches December: 3.16 inches, normal 2.16 inches The sun is predicted to be back on Tuesday and throughout the week. Here's the forecast: Tuesday: A slight chance of thunderstorms before 7am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 10%. Tuesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 60. North wind around 6 mph. Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 77. Northeast wind around 6 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 64. Light and variable wind. Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 77. Calm wind becoming southwest 5 to 8 mph in the morning. Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 62. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph. Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 74. Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 56. Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 74. Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 57.
