Southwire Partners With Algae Tree To Host Carbon Removal Pilot
Southwire, the University of Georgia (UGA) College of Engineering and Algae Tree LLC have teamed up to pilot one of the first carbon removing art installations in the US. The unit grows microalgae in a tree-shaped photobioreactor at Southwire's Thorn Customer Solutions Center where visitors can witness the carbon dioxide removal project firsthand. The pilot unit contains a species of microalgae called Arthrospira platensis (spirulina) – a naturally occurring strain of algae – and is projected to capture carbon dioxide at the same rate as 38 fully grown trees. 'Southwire has a long-held commitment to sustainability, and this project aligns with our efforts to support education and reduce impacts to the environment,' said Bo Quick, vice president, corporate sustainability. 'We were pleased to engage with the Algae Tree and the UGA capstone students as they evaluated this innovative carbon removal technology.' While the pilot unit is in service, UGA engineering students will analyze data from the project with the hopes of helping influence the design of future full-scale ventures. Students displayed the prototype to members of the public and UGA community at the 2024 Capstone Design Showcase where it started hundreds of conversations about how carbon dioxide impacts the environment. 'The Algae Tree is a great way for organizations to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability,' said Jeffery Whitmire, Algae Tree founder. 'Our tree-shaped sculptures actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while engaging with the public and making a statement of beauty.' Visit to learn more about sustainability at Southwire. Southwire Celebrates Inaugural Sustainability Week
View the original article at In honor of the company's 75th anniversary and in celebration of Earth Month, Southwire hosted its first ever Sustainability Week in April. The sustainability team hosted a week of communications, education and activities to engage team members across the globe. 'In order for Southwire to continue to be generationally sustainable for the next 75 years and beyond, we need everyone on board,' said Burt Fealing, Southwire's EVP, General Counsel and Chief Sustainability Officer. 'We hope that Sustainability Week helped all of our team members, 9,000 plus strong, better understand how they can get involved in sustainability and how they can be a leader in these efforts at home, at work and in their communities.' Each day of Sustainability Week was focused on one of Southwire's five core tenets of sustainability: Growing Green Monday highlighted success stories from the sustainability champions at Southwire's Denton, Tx., Lafayette, In., and North Campus, Ga. sites. Sustainability champions are volunteer roles at each site who are responsible for furthering local energy, water and waste efficiency projects. Living Well Tuesday featured health and wellness benefits available to all Southwire team members, including free therapy and coaching sessions from Spring Health, digital musculoskeletal therapy for back and joint pain from Hinge Health, webinars and resources for National Stress Awareness Month & Substance Abuse Awareness Month and more. Giving Back Wednesday promoted volunteer events in April including electronics recycling and our annual Walk for Water fundraiser. The day also highlighted Southwire's Dollars for Doers program, which enables team members to earn donation credits for volunteer hours served, redeemable to any 501(c)(3) nonprofit of their choice. Doing Right Thursday told the story of how Southwire's ethics & compliance program was built from the ground up and how it contributed to Southwire being named one of the World's Most Ethical Companies® by Ethisphere for the second year in a row. Building Worth Friday included an educational presentation on sustainable innovations happening within Southwire, as well as a panel discussion on Building a STEM Career in Green Technology in partnership with Georgia Tech and Envision Racing, one of the founding and most successful teams in Formula E racing. During Earth Month, Southwire also distributed nearly 400 trees to team members to plant at home or at a facility. Through the Arbor Day Foundation's community canopy program, team members signed up to have trees delivered directly to their home or to their manufacturing or distribution site, with web-based tools to help them identify the ideal planting location to maximize energy savings and carbon sequestration. Southwire also partnered with Neighborhood Forest to gift trees to students at our two 12 for Life facilities in Carrollton, Ga. and Florence, Al. to plant with their families at home. Southwire's Project GIFT® Supports Water Mission With Annual Walk for Water Events Internationally
Throughout the months of April and May, Southwire's Project GIFT® partnered with Water Mission to host Walk for Water events across the company. More than 350 participants volunteered their time to be a part of the events this year, collecting more than $38,000 in support of Water Mission. Walk for Water is a community event that raises awareness and funds for the global water crisis. At the event, participants walk a course that is roughly 2-3 miles, simulating the trek that many people around the world take to get drinking water each day. According to the Water Mission website, two billion people around the world lack access to safe water. The non-profit was founded in 2001 with the goal of ending this crisis by bringing clean, fresh water to those in less fortunate circumstances. 'Walk for Water is one of my favorite events,' said Stefanie Anderson, senior giving back specialist at Southwire. 'Water Mission's goal is so important. Clean water is often something we all take for granted. I always bring my children so that they can learn about the world and know that they that they can have an impact, even if it is small steps.' This spring, Southwire facilities in Bremen, Ind., Denton, Texas, Youngsville, N.C., the West Ga. region, Calgary and Toronto, Canada, and Honduras hosted walks in their communities. The Southwire Honduras team was joined at their event by members of Water Mission's own Honduras-based team. 2025 marks the fourth year that Southwire sites participated in Walk for Water. 'Being a part of this event is something small and doable for our community, but the global impact that it has is tremendous,' said Candice Winters, director of people and culture at Southwire. 'We are giving clean water—which is essential yet taken for granted—to communities that would not otherwise be able to have it. It is such a cool event for an amazing purpose and organization.' Access to clean, safe water transforms lives. Worldwide, millions of people are forced to rely on polluted water sources, exposing them to severe health risks caused by waterborne diseases. Clean water is the first step in paving the way not just for health, but for education and economic growth while helping to break the cycle of poverty. 'It's truly inspiring to see Southwire employees across so many locations unite with one purpose—to walk, raise awareness and help provide access to safe water,' said Heather Fleming, national walk program specialist for Water Mission. 'Their commitment through Walk for Water is making a tangible difference, not just for individuals but for entire communities. Safe water means improved health, the opportunity for children to attend school and the ability for families to thrive. Southwire's partnership is a powerful reminder that when we walk together, we bring lasting change to those who need it most.' Project GIFT's Walk for Water is made possible with the support of many community sponsors including West Georgia Technical College, CDT Construction, University of West Georgia, Medimpact, Heart Wood Products, Cintas, 3:16 Healthcare, RaLin, Tisinger Vance, Phoenix Wood Products and Gradick Communications.
