Former state youth chief of NCP Suraj Chavan & nine others surrender before police, released

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Suraj Chavan, who was compelled to resign from the position of NCP state youth president after assaulting Chhava Sanghatna office bearers for throwing cards at NCP state president Sunil Tatkare, surrendered to Latur police late on Tuesday along with nine others. All the accused were released on Wednesday morning after being issued notices and instructed to cooperate with the ongoing investigation. Police said the FIR registered against the suspects includes bailable sections, which resulted in their release. Latur superintendent of police Amol Tambe told TOI, "All the sections mentioned in the FIR have a punishment of seven or fewer years. According to the guidelines laid by the Supreme Court, arrest cannot be made under such sections." Sources within Latur police said in the coming days, police will initiate appropriate preventive measures to ensure that no law and order issues arise from similar incidents. The incident originated from a complaint lodged by Chhava Sanghatna's key office-bearer Vijay Ghadge, who, along with others, was assaulted by Chavan and other NCP workers after they threw playing cards at Tatkare. They also requested him to pass the cards to agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate, who allegedly appeared in a video showing him playing rummy during an assembly session. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No room on your Mac? Idol makers go back to plastic to protect Durga from water damage

1 2 3 4 Kolkata: With only two months to go for Mahalaya, and more rain predicted in the coming days, artisans in Kumartuli are racing against time to complete Durga idols. July and Aug are usually the busiest for idol makers, as well as the most challenging, with persistent rain, overcast skies, and humidity hampering the drying and detailing of the clay idols. This year, most idol makers have taken proactive steps to ensure work doesn't come to a halt, like installing blow dryers, pedestal fans, and makeshift ovens, and waterproofing their workshops with tarpaulin sheets and plastic covers. Though Durga Puja will start in the last week of Sept this year, many puja committees will take idol deliveries earlier. "Idol makers depend on clear skies and strong sunlight to naturally dry the clay structures before painting and decorating. But this time every year, rain, overcast conditions, and lack of proper sunlight delay the process. Many artisans have taken measures to weather the monsoon and continue work unhindered," said Kartik Pal of Kumartuli Mritshilpi Sanskritik Samiti, a local artisans' collective. "We have waterproofed our workshop using layers of plastic and installed pedestal fans. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No room on your Mac? Artisans are using small ovens to dry smaller parts, like hands, faces, and weapons. Mala Pal, one of the few female idol makers in Kumartuli, said: "We have strict delivery deadlines. This year, we've invested in blow torches and pedestal fans to speed up the drying process inside the workshops." Durga Puja is more than a tradition — it's an economy. From decorators to transporters, everyone's schedule depends on the timely completion of idols.

PMRDA removes 166 encroachments in Hinjewadi; fortnightly reviews to monitor progress

1 2 Pune: PMRDA has so far cleared 166 illegal constructions and encroachments over the past 15 days in Hinjewadi-Maan-Marunji corridor to ease traffic congestion in the area, officials said. The crackdown follows mounting complaints about unauthorized structures choking arterial roads and blocking natural drainage channels, worsening traffic flow and increasing risk of flooding. Key areas targeted include Laxmi Chowk, Wipro Circle, Maan Road, and Marunji, where many illegal structures were removed. In several cases, encroachers voluntarily dismantled their constructions after being served notices, officials said. Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) also launched surveys in Shivaji Chowk, Crematorium Road, Wakad Road, Phase 1 Road, and other parts of Hinjewadi, Maan, and Marunji. Officials said further action would be taken once these surveys were completed and fresh notices served on encroachers. PMRDA has urged residents and businesses to cooperate as part of its initiative to decongest traffic and reclaim public spaces. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Storage running out on your Mac? Divisional commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar met citizen groups on Tuesday as part of the fortnightly review and warned that delays, especially in road works, could even attract action under the Disaster Management Act. He said to ensure real-time coordination and grievance redressal, a dedicated WhatsApp group with civic officials and citizen representatives would be created, allowing residents to flag issues directly and seeking prompt resolution. After facing criticism for the past couple of months over bad roads and waterlogging in Hinjewadi area due to Metro work, PMRDA has also planned to upgrade the existing road along Metro line 3—from Maan (depot) in Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar—to a durable cement-concrete road, accompanied by improved road-related infrastructure and public amenities. PMRDA also conducted the second successful trial run of Metro Line 3, connecting Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar. The trial was conducted at a speed of approximately 40 kmph between Mann Depot and Hinjewadi Phase 2.

Cops establish identity of woman set ablaze by duo to fake suicide

Kolhapur: Solapur police on Tuesday said they have identified the woman who was allegedly burned on a haystack in Mangalwedha village last Monday to make it appear as a suicide by a married woman seeking to start a new life with her brother-in-law. Police identified the deceased woman as a 58-years-old resident of Pandharpur. "Kiran Sawant (23) and her brother-in-law Nishant Satish Sawant (20) were arrested for their involvement in the case last Tuesday. Subsequent investigations showed that Nishant befriended the Pandharpur woman 25 days before the murder on the night intervening July 11 and 12," police said. Inspector Dattatray Borigidde of Mangalwedha police said the Pandharpur woman lived with her husband, a priest. "The couple's 22-year-old son with learning disabilities had gone missing three years ago. Ever since, the woman would leave home in the mornings looking for her son and return in the evenings. Nishant found her in Pandharpur's Gopalpur area and exploited her vulnerable state after deceitfully promising that he had located her son. The woman left Pandharpur with Nishant on July 11 and was murdered in Patkhal village." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Space Lens: The visual tool that can easily clean up your storage MacPaw Read More Undo Police said CCTV footage from three locations in Pandharpur confirmed Nishant's bike ride with the woman on July 11 to the village where she was murdered. "The investigations have revealed that he killed the woman with a handkerchief, initially hid the body under bushes, then moved it to a dilapidated house. After 48 hours, he took the body out, placed it on a haystack, poured petrol from a can he had purchased, and set it afire," the officer said. He said Nishant had bought five litres of petrol. "Kiran helped Nishant in hatching the conspiracy," the inspector said, adding that Nishant worked in a jewellery shop in Karad. "He sent Kiran to Karad, where both were planning to start a new life," he said. The police requested a custody extension for the two suspects, which the court granted till Friday. The extension was sought to gather more technical evidence to corroborate the crime sequence as confessed by Nishant and Kiran. "Kiran's husband, who owns a dhaba, was reportedly unaware of her seven-month-long secret affair with his cousin," police added.

Campus rape: What have you been doing since 2023? Court asks state

1 2 Kolkata: The Alipore ACJM court on Tuesday demanded to know the state's measures over the past two years to ensure punishment for law college rape prime accused Monojit Mishra ever since the first complaints were lodged against him in 2023. "What have you been doing since 2023?" said the ACJM magistrate. The question came seconds after the special public prosecutor, Bivas Chatterjee, mentioned this "bigger crime could have been avoided had he been punished for his earlier crimes since 2023". Police showed Mishra as 'arrested' in the said earlier cases, one of rioting and the other of molestation, registered in 2023 and 2024. Charge sheets had been filed in both cases and Mishra had been granted bail. All the four accused in the campus rape case—Mishra (31), his two associates, students Pramit Mukherjee (20) and Zaib Ahmed (19), and campus security guard Pinaki Banerjee—were produced in court on Tuesday and remanded in judicial custody till Aug 5. "The gait pattern analysis, which will confirm the presence of the accused on the spot, will be carried out on Wednesday. The charge sheet will be filed at the earliest and the state will go in for custody trial," said public prosecutor Sourin Ghosal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No room on your Mac? Space Lens can easily and safely fix that MacPaw Read More Undo You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Pointing out that they were not applying for bail, Mishra's lawyer, Raju Ganguly, claimed his client was being denied proper food and water in custody and was also being pressured to "confess to the crime". Ganguly also pleaded that a mosquito net, a few books and paper be arranged for Mishra as his "fundamental rights". But special PP Chatterjee claimed Mishra's plea for stationery might be a ruse to pose as a meritorious student, who was missing his law classes. "It's important to look at his criminal records," Chatterjee said, adding he had a record of 12 cases against him. Chatterjee said the accused were not cooperating with the investigation, as was evident from the police interrogation on July 19. "We oppose the bail applications by Pramit and Pinaki. The guard's job was to stop the crime from taking place. Instead, he guarded the crime spot, which amounted to furthering the crime. Those recording the crime are very much part of the crime. Thus all four are in the same boat," said Chatterjee. Outside the court, Ganguly dismissed the 12 old cases, including the ones where Mishra was shown arrested on Tuesday, and called them 'politically motivated'. "Each case has a counter case. They were drawn up by his political rivals. That is why it led the magistrate to question what the state was doing on these cases since 2023," he claimed.
