Zach Braff: Scrubs Revival Will Capture Same ‘Humor and Heart,' Show How JD Has Been ‘Beaten Down by the System'

ABC's Scrubs revival will do more than just 'play the hits.' Series creator Bill Lawrence was joined by leading man Zach Braff at the ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas, Sunday, where they opened up about the impetus for the highly anticipated follow-up. Led to Ted Lasso 9-1-1: Nashville Adds Hailey Kilgore, Michael Provost and 2 Others to Cast - See Who Everyone Is Playing 'It's fun to talk to [the fans] about it because part of the burden is Zach and Donald [Faison] were going, 'Eaaaaaagle!' Like, those guys are 50 now!' Lawrence exclaimed. 'So, we have to figure out what that looks like.' And according to Braff, those discussions are well underway. 'When Bill and I shoot the s—t about it, [we ask ourselves] how do you still have the spirit of the [original] show — the humor and the heart of the show, and the fantasies and all the fun stuff that we all loved?' he relayed. 'The show was about a young doctor coming into this new world, so what is it like [to be] a doctor who is 50 and has been beaten down by the system? It's very, very hard to be a doctor today.' At this point, Lawrence interjected and acknowledged that, yes, 'medicine has a changed a lot. In some dark, hard ways, but [also] in some very comedic ways….' 'And what is [JD's] life like now?' Braff asked. 'Obviously, you can still have the bromance, and the love, and the friendship. But coming at it from the opposite angle, what is it like for a guy who has been through this system and dealing with all that stuff for so long?' And that's what excites them as they talk more about a potential Season 10, which is still awaiting an official green light at the network. Of course, Lawrence and Braff also are looking forward to getting the proverbial band back together. When I moderated the Bill Lawrence & Friends panel the previous evening — an event that also featured Josh Hopkins (Cougar Town), Brett Goldstein and Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso), and Charly Clive (star of Lawrence's forthcoming Steve Carell comedy for HBO) — Lawrence and Braff reiterated just how inseparable the Scrubs cast has remained since its original nine-season run wrapped 15 years ago. 'We're all still friends,' Braff said. 'People think this is a lie we tell you, but we all really hang out. Bill and I go over to Johnny C. [McGinley's] house in Malibu and sit in his sauna, Donald and I are legitimately best friends… As we speak, he's staying in my apartment in New York City….' 'Neil Flynn is on Shrinking,' Lawrence interjected, 'and Sarah [Chalke] is out with my wife [Christa Miller right now].' 'We're all very close,' Braff continued. 'And so when this came up — that ABC and Disney wanted to do it — it just felt like the right time .The idea of going and laughing all day long with this group of people again, that I love so much, sounded like a really good time.' Shrinking Boss Bill Lawrence Tees Up Reunion With His ‘Hero' Michael J. Fox, Shares Favorite Spin City Memory

You know the old saying, 'Don't work with your heroes'? Well, perhaps it actually should have been 'Don't work with your heroes… unless your hero is Michael J. Fox.' On Saturday, I moderated the Bill Lawrence & Friends panel at ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas — a panel that also featured Zach Braff (Scrubs), Josh Hopkins (Cougar Town), Brett Goldstein and Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso), and Charly Clive (Lawrence's forthcoming HBO show) — and I asked Lawrence about his reunion with the Spin City star, who has already filmed scenes for Season 3 of Apple TV+'s Shrinking (premiere date TBA). More from TVLine Brett Goldstein Reveals How His Role in Bill Lawrence-Donald Faison Pilot 'Space Turk' (?!) Led to Ted Lasso Scrubs 2.0: Zach Braff Inks Deal to Return for ABC Revival — Who Else Is Expected Back? Slow Horses Lands Season 5 Premiere Date at Apple TV+ 'He's one of the greatest people I've ever met, he's one of my mentors — and man, what an inspiring dude the way that he is living his life, so to get to work with him….' Lawrence pauses, then continues: 'I didn't expect to have career highlights at this point in my career, and I was on set about 10 days ago watching Harrison Ford, Mike Fox and Candice Bergen — oops, spoiler! — acting together. For me, that was my childhood.' Additional details surrounding Fox's guest stint — which marks his first acting gig in five years — are being kept under wraps, along with any information about who Bergen is playing. But the fact that Fox is sharing scenes with Ford — whose character, Dr. Paul Rhoades, also lives with Parkinson's disease — is certainly telling. As a follow-up, I ask Lawrence if he has a favorite memory of Fox from their time working together on the aforementioned Spin City. What followed was an anecdote from the very beginning of the ABC sitcom's 1996-2002 run: I remember when Mike first made me feel comfortable. I was lucky enough to have a mentor [Family Ties mastermind Gary David Goldberg] with whom I co-created Spin City. I was 25 years old, and Mike Fox was saying things I wrote, and I was so scared to give him notes. What finally broke the ice — and I think he did this on purpose — was there was a joke that I was convinced was going to be f–king funny. Mike's like, 'Dude, not funny,' and I'm like, 'It's gonna be funny,' and he's like, 'All right, I'll do it.' It's the first scene with a huge audience, it's crackling with electricity, and we get to that joke, and he says it, and there's f–king crickets. And instead of going on with the scene, he just looked over at me and goes, 'You f–king happy now?' [Laughs] He was letting me know that it was OK [to give him a note], and it gave me so much confidence. But he was also letting me know that those of us who write don't have to have that kind of egg on our face if it goes south, so one of the things we always tell everybody [on my shows] is if you do something silly and big and bold and go for it, and it doesn't work, I promise it won't be on the show. But yeah, I hope you guys like seeing Mike on TV again. He's my hero. NBC Nightly News: Tom Llamas Makes His Debut as Anchor — How'd He Do?

Tom Llamas is officially NBC's new top newsman. Led to Ted Lasso Llamas didn't waste any time introducing himself on Monday's broadcast: He got right to business, giving us the latest details on the fire bomb attack on a Jewish community group in Boulder, protests against ICE and the war in Ukraine. He did add a personal note at the end, though, telling viewers: 'My thanks to all of you as we start this new adventure together. Tonight, and always, we're here for you.' Holt announced in February that he was stepping down as NBC Nightly News anchor, a role he's held since 2015. Moving forward, he will focus on NBC News' Dateline, which he has anchored since 2011. 'After 10 years, 17 if you include my years on the weekends, the time has come for me to step away from my role as anchor of Nightly News,' Holt said in a statement to NBC staffers. 'It has truly been the honor of a lifetime to work with each of you every day, keeping journalism as our true north and our viewers at the center of everything we do.' Llamas, whose ascension to the Nightly News anchor chair was first reported in March, has served as a senior national correspondent for NBC News and reported for NBC Nightly News alongside Holt. He also anchored Top Story with Tom Llamas, a daily primetime newscast for NBC News NOW, and contributed to various NBC News outlets, including Today. How did Llamas do in his debut as anchor? Give him a grade in our poll, and let us know in the comments if you plan to keep watching. Best of TVLine 'Missing' Shows, Found! SNL 50 Delivered 3-Year Audience High, Broadcast's Top-Rated Series

Saturday Night Live knows how to mark a milestone. Season 50 of NBC's iconic sketch comedy program averaged 8.1 million weekly viewers (across all platforms and with Live+7 playback). That's a 12% increase vs. Season 49 and marks the program's most-watched run since Season 47. Led to Ted Lasso Lester Holt Signs Off as NBC Nightly News Anchor - Will You Miss Him? In the coveted-and-delicious 18-49 demo, SNL 50 averaged a 1.7 rating, which is plenty good enough to lay claim to the 'No. 1 broadcast entertainment series' title for the 2024-25 TV season. (It easily bests ABC's Dancing With the Stars and CBS' Survivor, which led primetime entertainment fare this season with 0.9 ratings.) SNL also stands also the No. 1-rated comedy series across both broadcast and cable for a sixth consecutive season. 'To see the show honor its legacy while still pushing boundaries was incredible,' says Katie Hockmeyer, EVP of Late Night for NBCUniversal Entertainment. 'The strong ratings this season are a testament to how deeply SNL continues to resonate with audiences. After five decades, SNL remains a powerful force in shaping culture and making us laugh week after week.' The most-watched Season 50 episode on social media (with 712 million views), NBC notes, was the Oct. 12 telecast hosted by Ariana Grande with musical guest Stevie Nicks. The most-viewed sketch on social media (171 million views) in turn was 'Domingo: Bridesmaid Speech' from that same episode. Beyond SNL Season 50's weekly outings, SNL50: The Anniversary Special averaged 22.8 million total viewers across all platforms (in Live+35), while SNL50: The Homecoming Concert stands as Peacock's 'No. 1 highest-reaching original special of all time.' SNL50: The Anniversary Special will re-air this Sunday, June 8 from 7:30-11 pm ET.
