Woman shot after chasing down her stolen car in Spartanburg: Police
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) — Police are investigating a shooting that occurred after a woman was tracking down her stolen car in Spartanburg Wednesday night. According to the Spartanburg Police Department, the shooting occurred around 9:45 p.m. at the intersection of Collins Ave. and Georgia Street. The woman told police she arrived early to her job at the HotSpot on East Henry Street and went inside to get a coffee to drink while she waited in her car before her shift. She told police that she had left the keys in the car when she went inside the store. When walking back to her car, she saw a man get into her car and drive away. The victim was able to wave down a friend she recognized to follow her car. The pair followed the car down Union Street then onto Duncan Park Drive, where the car swerved and hit the victim's friends car. The pursuit continued back on to Collins Ave., when the suspect slowed down next to the victim's friend's car. The suspect, police said, then fired two shots. One hit the door of the car, while the other hit the woman in the thigh. Despite being shot at, the two continued to follow the car to the intersection of Collins Ave. and Georgia Street, but were unable to block in the car. The suspect then got around the victim's friend's car and sped away toward a corner store. The woman was then taken home and called police, and she was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for her injury. Police said the suspect is a Black man, standing at 6'1″ and weighing 210 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt with his hood up. The suspect was driving the victim's 2011 silver Honda Pilot at the time of the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to all the Spartanburg Police Department at (864) 596-2035. ‘100 deadliest days of summer' begins this weekend: what to know
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – '100 Deadly Days of Summer' – the span of time between Memorial Day and Labor Day – have begun and Spartanburg officials are urging parents to take extra caution this year. Safe Kids of the Piedmont said 41% of fatal, unintentional injuries among children occur over the next three months. They said it takes the lives of nearly 4,000 kids. The causes of death among children during this time range from motor vehicle collisions, unsafe sleeping practices while travelling, and drowning, which makes up for 71%. 'What most people don't realize is that lifeguards are not required at hotel pools,' said Penny Shaw, the Program Coordinator at Safe Kids. 'It's so important when you're vacationing that you are what we call the 'water watcher' and that you are paying attention and watching your children. Put your phone down at the poolside and make sure, because drowning happens very fast.' Shaw explained one of the biggest misconceptions parents have about drowning. 'They [assume] would hear a child drowning, when once the child starts to struggle, it's within seconds that they won't hear a sound,' she said. Major Art Littlejohn with Spartanburg Police Department had another focus: safe driving. He said during the '100 deadly days,' they see an increase in vehicle collisions. 'We want to bring awareness to this because we want people to do simple things, such as put your phone down,' Littlejohn said. 'We have a lot of crashes on the road and it's attentiveness where someone has a phone and they're trying to make some phone calls, whatever they may be doing.' Safe Kids said motor vehicle accidents account for 39% of unintentional child deaths during these three months. 'Look at the guidelines for child passenger safety,' said Shaw. 'Where the children should be sitting in the car when you're traveling, how if they're wanting to take a nap should they do that safely and making sure that they're in the backseat as far away from airbag as possible.' Safe Kids of the Piedmont said Friday, June 6, they will host an event at Cleveland Park. There, parents are able to take quick child-passenger safety courses, water safety courses, and bring their children for life jacket fittings. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Spartanburg Police see uptick in vape shop burglaries
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – Multiple investigations are underway in Spartanburg over a string of vape shop burglaries. On September 6, 2024, officers with the Spartanburg Police were called to Sal's Tobacco and Vape Shop after it was broken into. Since then, burglaries at vape shops have become more frequent, according to police. 'What we noticed is we had three [burglaries] in 2024, and 11 this year. Although we have break-ins on a regular basis, this looks like it is a trend for vape shops in particular,' Major Art Littlejohn with the Spartanburg Police said. Out of the 14 burglaries, only two cases had arrests, leaving 12 cases unsolved. 'In some of the cases, they are ramming out the entire wall of the business or the front doors,' Littlejohn said. 'Now we have replace the wall, replace the cabinets that they are being stored in. That's a big expense for our business owners.' Some stores were hit multiple times, such as Sal's Vape Shop. The store had been broken into for a second time on April 18, 2025. Police said surveillance video showed a Chevrolet Suburban ram into the right side of the shop. Two masked individuals entered the store, fired a weapon at the glass cabinets and fled the scene with several items, estimating to cost $20,000 dollars. Suspects stole $20K in products from Spartanburg vape shop 'The reason that we started to look at it and investigate it more closely is that with these vape shops, people are taking stolen cars; they will steal a car, use that car to break into a business, get the items and drop the stolen car back off,' Littlejohn said. 'What we are trying to do is figure out whether or not all the cases are connected, they could be, [or] it could be one or two that is connected, and maybe not all of them.' If you have any information on these cases, you can leave a tip for the Spartanburg Police Department by calling Crimes Stoppers at 1(888) CRIMESC. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Upstate woman falls victim to PayPal impersonator scam
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – Police are investigating a scam after a woman was said she scammed out of $5,500 after receiving a fake PayPal email. On Friday, a woman said that she received an email from 'PayPal,' congratulating her for purchasing a gun, according to the Spartanburg Police Department. The woman told officers that she does not have a PayPal account, so she called the customer service number that was provided in the email. The victim said she spoke with someone about the issue, who transferred her to the 'anti-theft specialist.' The 'specialist' instructed her to go to the bank and withdraw $5,500, according to police. She was then instructed to go to a gas station and transfer the money via Bitcoin. The 'specialist' had instructed the victim on what to do, according to police.
