Two charged over RM13.45mil untaxed cigarettes seized in Sepang
SEPANG: Two men have been charged after police seized 566 cases of untaxed cigarettes worth about RM13.45 million here on Aug 3. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said authorities intercepted a bonded lorry at the Putrajaya toll of the Maju Expressway (MEX) in Cyberjaya that day. He said the operation, carried out about 2.30pm, involved policemen from Bukit Aman's Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence Investigation and the Sepang police Criminal Investigation Department. He said an inspection of the lorry led to the discovery of various brands of illicit cigarettes, adding that the driver and co-driver of the vehicle, aged 35 and 38, were subsequently detained. Other items seized included the lorry, its ignition key, two mobile phones and four delivery order documents. Shazeli said checks revealed that both suspects have prior criminal and drug abuse records. "The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, which provides for a fine of not less than 10 times the customs duty or RM100,000, whichever is higher, and not more than 20 times the value of the goods or RM500,000, whichever is higher, or imprisonment of between six months and five years, or both, upon conviction," he said. On Aug 7, both men were charged at the Sepang magistrate's court under the same section. Shazeli reminded the public not to get involved in any smuggling or sale of illicit cigarettes, adding that stern action will be taken against offenders.
