Alex Gibney to Exec Produce Doc About College Culture Wars and Freedom of Speech (EXCLUSIVE)

Oscar winner Alex Gibney has signed on to executive produce 'Speechless,' a feature-length documentary about the culture wars being waged and the threats to freedom of speech on university and college campuses across the United States. Directed by Ric Esther Bienstock ('Enslaved'), the doc will feature interviews with students, faculty, and administrators from a wide range of universities and colleges, including community colleges and the Ivys. 'Speechless' will examine the fiery ideological clashes, stark political divides, and deeply personal battles shaping the future of higher education. Additionally, the current threat to freedom of speech and academic freedom on U.S. college campuses will be covered in the film. To convey the turbulent crossroads facing academia, the doc will include covert recordings inside Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion offices, a white professor's landmark legal battle against racial discrimination, a conservative takeover of a Florida college, and the dramatic canceling of a Harvard biologist's 20-year career. 'This documentary shines a much-needed spotlight on the critical issues facing higher education today and challenges us to confront the consequences of stifling dissenting voices.' On March 4, in a social media post, President Trump threatened to stop federal funding for 'any College, School, or University that allows illegal protests,' and proposed that 'agitators will be imprisoned/or permanently sent back to the country from which they came.' 'In these dangerously polarized times, I thought it was essential to investigate the institutions shaping the minds of our future citizens and leaders,' says Bienstock. 'It's easy to mock 'woke' politics and rant about right-wing agendas, but the reality is more nuanced and, from what we've witnessed, way more dramatic. And now, with Trump in the White House and academia in his sights, the future of higher education has never been more precarious.' 'Speechless' is currently in production and is being backed by Toronto-based Good Soup Productions, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, BBC Storyville and The Why Foundation. In addition to Gibney, Mette Hoffmann Meyer and Randi Kirshenbaum will serve as executive producers on the film. Producers are Bienstock and Garfield L. Miller ('Percy Vs Goliath'). The documentary does not yet have a release date or U.S. distribution. CBC and BBC Storyville will distribute the doc in Canada and England, respectively. Gibney is currently in production on 'Musk,' about Elon Musk for HBO Documentary Films, and 'Knife,' a tentatively titled documentary inspired by Salman Rushdie's memoir 'Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder,' published in April. ‘The Big Bang Theory' Spinoff Lands Another Star From the Original Series

John Ross Bowie is poised to reprise the role of Caltech plasma physicist and string theorist Barry Kripke in a spinoff of CBS' long-running sitcom 'The Big Bang Theory' currently in the early stages of development at Max. An individual familiar with the matter tells TheWrap that because the project has not yet received a series greenlight, Bowie has signed a holding deal with Warner Bros. Television. The spinoff comes from Chuck Lorre Productions in association with WBTV. Lorree serve as an executive producer and writer alongside Zak Penn and Bill Prady. Additional details about the project remain under wraps. Other 'Big Bang Theory' alums poised to return include Kevin Sussman, who portrayed Stuart Bloom, Brian Posehn, who played Bert Kibbler, and Lauren Lapkus, who played Denise. Introduced in Season 2, Kripke became a fan favorite, known for incessantly mocking his colleague and rival Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and his speech impediment due to rhotacism. He would go on to become a recurring character through the remainder of the show's 12-season run. In addition to 'The Big Bang Theory,' Bowie's other credits include 'Speechless,' 'Children's Hospital,' 'Jumanji: The Next Level,' and another Chuck Lorre CBS comedy, 'United States of Al.' The latest 'Big Bang Theory' spinoff follows the CBS hit 'Young Sheldon,' which ended last year after a 7-season run on the network. ‘The Big Bang Theory's John Ross Bowie To Join Max Spinoff, Reprising Barry Kripke Role

EXCLUSIVE: Gweat news for woyaw Big Bang fans: another popular character from the hit CBS sitcom is poised to return for the upcoming spinoff on Max. John Ross Bowie, who played plasma physicist Barry Kripke on The Big Bang Theory, is joining fellow alums Kevin Sussman (Stuart Bloom), Brian Posehn (Bert Kibbler) and Lauren Lapkus (Denise) on the offshoot from franchise boss Chuck Lorre and Warner Bros. Television. Since the project is still in development and has not been officially greenlighted, Bowie — just like Sussman, Posehn and Lapkus — has signed a WBTV talent holding deal with the purpose of starring in the proposed offshoot. Bowie was a mainstay on the original series. His character Barry Kripke quickly became a fan favorite when it was introduced in Season 2 and continued to recur for the rest of the series' 12-season run. A Caltech plasma physicist and string theorist, Kripke was known for relentlessly teasing his colleagues — with most of his barbs directed at his string theorist rival Sheldon (Jim Parsosn) — and for his distinct speech pattern. He has rhotacism, pronouncing 'r' and 'l' as 'w', making him sound a bit like a cartoon character. The addition of his recurring role on Big Bang, Bowie starred on the ABC comedy series Speechless. He also recurred on another Chuck Lorre CBS comedy, United States of Al. His feature credits include Jumanji: The Next Level. Bowie, who is a regular performer at The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles and New York, is repped by Innovative Artists.
