Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 74: a history of the number and who wore it best
The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 74 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 74 and the players who wore it best.
Current Steelers No. 74 wearer: OG Spencer Anderson
Anderson was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 251st overall pick in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He made his regular season debut against the Texans in Week 4 and appeared in eight games during his rookie season. Anderson started four games in 2024 and surrendered just one sack across 159 pass-blocking snaps. His versatility to line up at tackle or guard is an added bonus for Pittsburgh, who could eventually slot Anderson into a starting role once LG Isaac Seumalo's time in the Steel City comes to an end.
Last five Steelers to wear No. 74:
Best No. 74 in Steelers history: OT Frank Varrichione
Varrichione is arguably the best Steeler to ever don the No. 74. He was drafted by Pittsburgh with the sixth overall pick in the first round of the 1955 NFL Draft and served as the team's starting offensive tackle from 1955 to 1960, before being traded to the Rams in 1961. He earned five Pro Bowl selections and was named to the Pittsburgh Steelers Legends team for his contributions to the Steel City brand of football.
