Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 74: a history of the number and who wore it best

USA Today6 hours ago

The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 74 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 74 and the players who wore it best.
Current Steelers No. 74 wearer: OG Spencer Anderson
Anderson was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 251st overall pick in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He made his regular season debut against the Texans in Week 4 and appeared in eight games during his rookie season. Anderson started four games in 2024 and surrendered just one sack across 159 pass-blocking snaps. His versatility to line up at tackle or guard is an added bonus for Pittsburgh, who could eventually slot Anderson into a starting role once LG Isaac Seumalo's time in the Steel City comes to an end.
Last five Steelers to wear No. 74:
Best No. 74 in Steelers history: OT Frank Varrichione
Varrichione is arguably the best Steeler to ever don the No. 74. He was drafted by Pittsburgh with the sixth overall pick in the first round of the 1955 NFL Draft and served as the team's starting offensive tackle from 1955 to 1960, before being traded to the Rams in 1961. He earned five Pro Bowl selections and was named to the Pittsburgh Steelers Legends team for his contributions to the Steel City brand of football.

Report: Vegas Golden Knights re-signing Reilly Smith to one-year, $2 million contract

Reilly Smith is re-signing with the Vegas Golden Knights on a one-year contract worth $2 million, according to a person with knowledge of the deal. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the team had not announced the extension. It comes with a full no-trade clause, the person said. Smith was one of the original 'Misfits' from the franchise's inaugural season in 2017-18 after then-general manager George McPhee selected him from Florida in the expansion draft. He helped Vegas win the Stanley Cup in 2023 and was traded to Pittsburgh that summer. Dealt to the New York Rangers last year, he rejoined the Golden Knights at the trade deadline in March and is now staying around for another season. Smith, 34, had 40 points last season, including 11 in 21 games with Vegas down the stretch. He has 255 goals and 381 assists for 636 points in 1,036 NHL regular-season and playoff games. Keeping Smith around at a salary cap-friendly rate could allow GM Kelly McCrimmon to be aggressive in free agency when the market opens on July 1, especially if the chronic issues Alex Pietrangelo has been playing through keep the veteran defenseman off the ice next season and land him on long-term injured reserve. Mitch Marner and Brad Marchand are among the big-name stars available.

NEW YORK — Ronald Acuña Jr. of the host Braves was announced Wednesday as the first of the eight hitters who will compete in the All-Star Home Run Derby at Atlanta's Truist Park on July 14. Acuña, who homered on the first pitch of his May 23 return to the Braves following a torn left ACL, will participate in the derby for the third time. He lost to New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso 20-19 in the semifinals in 2019 after opening with a 25-18 victory over Pittsburgh's Josh Bell, then lost to Alonso 20-19 in the first round at Dodger Stadium in 2022. 'I'm even more excited to be doing it here in Atlanta in front of our fans,' Acuña said through a translator in an interview on ESPN. 'I'm excited to do it at home and do it for them ... and put on a great show for them.' A four-time All-Star, Acuña began the night batting .385 with nine homers and 16 RBIs in 29 games this season. He was the 2023 NL MVP, when he equaled a career high with 41 home runs.

Beloved NFL Super Bowl Champion Dead At 83

Beloved NFL Super Bowl Champion Dead At 83 originally appeared on The Spun. The football world is in mourning today as one of the best pass rushers of the AFL-NFL rivalry years and a beloved Super Bowl champion has passed away. Advertisement On Wednesday, numerous outlets reported that former New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Gerry Philbin passed away. He was 83 years old. Philbin was a star pass rusher for the New York Jets in the 1960s, racking up 66.5 sacks over 10 seasons in the AFL and later the NFL following the AFL-NFL merger. 65 of those sacks came with the Jets, though 48.5 of them came between 1966 and 1969. His sacks mark still ranks fourth in franchise history. In 1968, Philbin enjoyed a career-high 14.0 sacks and became a defensive anchor for the Jets as they went on to win Super Bowl III in the biggest upset in NFL history. He would finish his NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1973 and play his final season of pro football with the New York Stars in the short-lived WFL in 1974. Philbin was voted to the American Football League All-Time Team in 1970 after the league merged with the NFL. And while Canton never came calling, Philbin was inducted into the Jets' Ring of Honor in 2011. In an interview with the Jets in 2018, Philbin reflected on the impact of the Jets' Super Bowl win. He felt that it was an extremely vindicating moment for his career and the careers of his AFL friends. Advertisement "The impact of the win," Philbin said. "The impact was so great that finally, the AFL was on par with the NFL. It really meant so much to the players around the league in the AFL because we were really second-class citizens up until the time the Jets won in the Super Bowl. Because prior to that there were two Super Bowls where the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders got beat pretty good by the NFL (Green Bay Packers). "So, it really was the impact of the game more or less for the players in the AFL and the fans around the country in the AFL cities. That's what my biggest thrill was. That and to go home and be No. 1 in New York is another good reason." He then went into real estate, moved to New Hampshire for a time and then moved to Florida to be close to his family. Advertisement "I've been retired for the last 15, 20 years. I had a business on Long Island for many years, a sand and gravel business," he said. "And then I sold that and my home and moved to Florida and became a real estate agent. I was in the real estate business for a while and then moved to New Hampshire. But my kids were living in Florida at the time, so I moved back and have since stayed, and I'm here now." Our hearts go out to Philbin's family and loved ones.
