Buzz grows in Yankees minor leagues with Spencer Jones back

Buzz grows in Yankees minor leagues with Spencer Jones back originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After missing nearly a month with a rib injury, Yankees prospect Spencer Jones has returned to Double-A Somerset and wasted no time making an impact. Out since May 4, Jones came back last Thursday and went 3-for-8 over three games, reminding everyone why he's one of the Eastern League's top power threats with nine home runs. Advertisement MINORS MATTERS Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Worth watching: Catcher Jesús Rodríguez lost 14 points on his batting average last week but still leads the IL with a .362 average. His .433 on-base percentage ranks third. Rodríguez is 9-for-13 in stolen base attempts. Third baseman José Rojas is tied for sixth in the league with 38 RBIs. He is one of four RailRiders with eight or more home runs. Allan Winans (4-0) threw 5⅓ scoreless innings Saturday against Worcester, lowering his ERA to 0.27 in eight games, including four starts. He has allowed 23 hits over 33⅓ innings. Winans has struck out 39 and walked 11. Advertisement Double-A Somerset Shortstop George Lombard Jr. is playing stellar defense but remains a work in progress offensively after 23 games at the Double-A level. His batting average is .195, but his .360 on-base percentage is encouraging. He has swiped seven bases in nine attempts. Cam Schlittler (4-5, Eastern League's fourth-best 2.38 ERA) gave up four hits and struck out six over five shutout innings against Akron on Sunday. He has 64 strikeouts (second in the EL) and 17 walks in 53 innings. New York Yankees center fielder Spencer JonesKim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images Jones, out since May 4 with a rib injury, returned Thursday and went 3-for-8 in three games. He struck out four times over the three-game stretch and is tied for third with 45 strikeouts in 100 at-bats. He earned a promotion last week after going 4-1 with a 1.21 ERA in eight starts with Single-A Tampa. Right-hander Bryce Cunningham (4-1, 2.14 ERA) was placed on the seven-day injured list. He was among the Sally League leaders at the time of his injury. Reliever Bryce Warrecker (0-0, 0.79 ERA) has allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out 29 in 22⅔ innings over 14 appearances. Class-A Tampa Left fielder Dillon Lewis leads the FSL with nine home runs. He is tied for sixth with 29 RBIs. Advertisement Third baseman-shortstop Owen Cobb, who doesn't qualify for the leaderboard with his .391 batting average, has played just once since May 25. He started the season on the Hudson Valley injured list before being sent to Tampa on April 29. Florida Complex League Yankees Third baseman Santiago Gomez is 9-for-10 in stolen bases with a .309 batting average. Left-hander Xavier Rivas earned a promotion to Tampa after going 1-0 with a 1.15 ERA over four games to start his pro career. 'Staying with his plan' has top Yankees prospect knocking on door of Triple-A

BRIDGEWATER – It may be time for Spencer Jones to start looking for apartments in Scranton. The 23-year-old Somerset outfielder is tied for the Double-A lead with seven home runs and striking out a bit less as he continues to climb the Yankees farm system. Advertisement Now knocking on the door of his first promotion to Triple-A Scranton, Jones has impressed with his work ethic and willingness to adapt. Although his strikeout rate remains relatively high at 34.8 percent, it's an improvement from the pace of his system-record 200-strikeout campaign in 2024. 'Last year, he had some ups and downs, getting a lot of strikeouts, but he worked so hard in spring training, and so far has worked really hard on being consistent and trying to put the barrel on the ball to hit pitches in the zone,' said Patriots manager Raul Dominguez. Spencer Jones has hit .256 with 27 home runs, 100 RBI and 37 steals in 162 games at Double-A. 'If he can stay like that, I think he's going to make the next step. From what I see so far, he's more consistent in what he's doing, more mature with what he's doing in the cage to prepare better. He's staying with his plan.' Advertisement More: All eyes on top Yankees prospect beginning 2025 season with Double-A Somerset Jones, the 25th pick in the 2022 MLB Draft from Vanderbilt, soared through the system to Double-A in late August of the following year but has stalled a bit since. As Somerset began a two-week road trip Tuesday, he was hitting .256 with 27 home runs and 100 RBI in 162 games with the Patriots, stealing 37 bases along the way. With a new batting stance and torpedo bat, the 6-foot-7, 235-pounder is hitting a homer every 12.71 plate appearances, an improvement of last year's mark of 32, albeit in a significantly smaller sample size. Jones has not spoken to reporters since Somerset's pre-season media day, but Dominguez was confident that his slugger will be able to maintain this level of consistency moving forward, if not improve. Advertisement 'It's a new year, a new season, and they tried to work so hard with him in spring training, trying to put that plan together with him,' he said. 'The plan is working right now for him. You can see the way that he's playing, he's so happy. It's good when the players are getting that result, they're going to trust in it and keep going … he's just got to stay consistent.' Yankees' top prospect hits injured list in Double-A

The New York Yankees' farm system has been buzzing lately, and one of its brightest lights, outfielder Spencer Jones, has been turning heads down in Double-A with the Somerset Patriots. Ranked as the organization's No. 2 prospect by MLB Pipeline—trailing only George Lombard Jr.—Jones was making a strong case for a ticket to Triple-A Scranton. But that train has hit a temporary stop. Unexpected Detour Just as whispers of a promotion were growing louder, the Yankees announced Jones had been placed on Somerset's 7-day injured list. The news came via a team post on X, which also mentioned the return of Christopher Familia from the development list. Beyond that, the curtain hasn't been pulled back—there's no word yet on the nature of Jones' injury or how long he might be out. Think of it like a novel where the next chapter was just getting good—then suddenly, the page is torn out. For now, fans and scouts alike are left guessing what comes next. Sure, his strikeout rate—north of 36 percent—hasn't shown much improvement over last year. But when he connects, the results are loud. He's already launched nine home runs and backed them with a disciplined eye at the plate, earning a walk rate that keeps pitchers on edge. All of it adds up to a 165 wRC+, a metric that puts his offensive performance far above league average. Advertisement It's like watching a high-strikeout artist in a heavyweight bout: he might miss a few swings, but when he lands a punch, it's a knockout. Wait and See For now, the spotlight on Jones dims slightly as the Yankees keep their cards close. Whether it's a minor tweak or something more serious remains to be seen. One thing's for sure—his early season surge had momentum, and the Yankees will be eager to see him back in the box as soon as possible.
