Fair City stars tease there are big things in store for Mondo and Ruby as Lidl comes to Carrigstown
Fair City stars George McMahon and Rachel Wren have said there are "exciting times" in store for their characters Mondo and Ruby and the rest of Carrigstown as Lidl opens in the neighbourhood. Fans of the RTÉ One soap are set to see plenty of red, yellow, and blue as the shop opens next Tuesday with Mondo and Ruby in the middle of all the drama and fun. "So, Mondo works in PR and he's helping with the launch of Lidl," actor McMahon explained to RTÉ Entertainment. "It's obviously a big contract for him and he's to work hand-in-hand with Renee (played by Una Crawford O'Brien), who's a bit of a busybody! She loves to feel like she's in charge. It's like we're kind of vying for attention from Lidl head office. "Helping Mondo out is Ruby in the office, and between the two of us, we're kind of stressed trying to get the launch up and running. "It's a nice little springboard for Mondo and Ruby because it seems like they've got a good working relationship going forward. Hopefully, they'll be on to the next thing and Comet (Mondo's company) will be ruling the PR world!" "I think Ruby massively looks up to Mondo," said co-star Wren. "She's such a hard worker and stuff, and her dad (Victor, played by Mark Asante) is a hard worker but in a very different way [to Mondo]. "I think with their past history and stuff (Mondo's partner Kira, played by Lynseyann Mulvey-Bowe, having an affair with Ruby's father Victor), she has always had a soft spot for Mondo, and they've always really looked out for each other. They really care about each other. "And also, they work really, really well together! They have a lot of fun in between all the stress! They can read each other well and know how to navigate things really well together." McMahon said that over the years, Carrigstown has gone from a small corner shop to the "Narnia" of having its own Lidl. "It kind of felt like Sports Day in school," he said of filming the grand opening scenes for the new supermarket. "Everyone with smiles on their faces just made our day so much fun. Days like that are definitely as fun as they look." "It was a great buzz," Wren agreed. "I've definitely never been with so many people on set, and it was also great to have so many young people and people who are big fans of the show being able to guest appear and be part of that experience. It was lovely to have them around as well. Everyone was in really great form and there was little jellies and stuff, so I was having a great time!" McMahon said that the new supermarket's opening coincides with "a really busy summer" in Carrigstown and "lots of stuff coming up after the summer as well". "As an actor in a soap, conflict is where all the magic is at, so you never know what's down the road..." he teased. When the actors were asked for their own 'Middle Aisle storylines' - the wish list plots they would love to see happen - both gave the Fair City writers and fans food for thought. "I would love to see Ruby and Gwen (played by Emily Lamey) team up for some absolute utter shenanigans!" Wren enthused. "I just think those two characters would have so much fun - Ruby idolising Gwen and trying to be cool for her and then just getting into loads of trouble. I loved the Gwen and Zak (Stephen O'Leary) storyline with the diamond, and so having Ruby come in and do something like that with her, I think that would be really, really fun." "My one is a road trip - and it's Cass (Eamon Morrissey), Mondo, and Ray (Mick Nolan)!" McMahon continued. "We need to go to the Gaeltacht for some reason and we end up in Tigh Tadhg's having pints in Ros na Rún. The crossover episode we all need and want! I'm putting it out there to the Universe. We have to make it happen." "How has that never happened before?!" asked Wren. "I don't know, but tá me réidh!" McMahon replied.

Grace, Grit, and Global Unity: Miss World Sports Day 2025 Unfolds in Telangana
The historic city of Hyderabad welcomed the world with open arms as the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium came alive during the much-anticipated Miss World Sports Day 2025. The morning air buzzed with excitement and cultural pride as contestants from across continents united not just in competition, but in celebration of spirit, resilience, and sisterhood. The festivities began with a vibrant flash mob performance by Deeksha Dance Studio, setting an electrifying tone for the day. Contestants were ushered in with warmth and enthusiasm as hydration zones and warm-up areas opened, gearing them up for a spectacular day of action. Before the contests began, the audience was treated to a captivating series of cultural demonstrations. The grace and strength of Mallakhamb athletes, including national gold medalists Rishab Ghubde and Sanavi Vaibhav Desai, mesmerized all with their awe-inspiring pole and rope acrobatics. This was followed by a flawless gymnastics' performance by champions Nishka Agarwal and Surabhi Prasanna, setting a high bar for athleticism. A soulful Artistic Yoga sequence by Guru K. Dattatreya and team, and a powerful Thang-Ta martial arts demonstration from Manipur, led by Guru Sapam Inaobi Singh, further brought Indian heritage to the forefront. The artistry of Anup Kumar Yama's roller-skating troupe added flair, while the Isha Foundation's Yoga Namaskar session grounded contestants in mindfulness before the games began. The ceremonial torch was lit by the Honourable Minister for Prohibition & Excise, Tourism, Culture & Archaeology, Shri Jupally Krishna Rao, officially declaring the Sports Day open, amidst resonating applause and the echoes of the National Anthem. But the day was not only about elegance—it was also about endurance, agility, and global spirit. Teams representing Americas & Caribbean, Africa, Europe, and Asia & Oceania competed across a series of exhilarating events—from badminton knockouts, shot put, and football penalty shootouts to brainy battles in chess and adrenaline-pumping basketball attempts. A heart-pounding Shuttle Fitness Run tested each team's synergy and stamina, while the badminton finals, and a surprise round of kabaddi, energized the cheering crowd. A thrilling sprint relay, covering two laps, gave one final display of athletic excellence before the grand finale. As the clock neared noon, a spirited Zumba session had everyone on their feet, led by a professional instructor. Contestants danced with joy, pride, and unity—capping the day with laughter and rhythm. In a touching culmination, all contestants assembled for a group photo and medal/token distribution, preserving a timeless memory of their sporting journey. Earlier in the week, Miss World 2025 contestants from Asia visited the majestic Pillalamarri banyan tree, a living symbol of Telangana's 700-year-old heritage. Their awe was evident as they immersed themselves in the region's rich cultural legacy—joined by Minister Jupally Krishna Rao, who shared insights into the state's unique traditions and natural wonders. This year's Sports Day was more than a contest—it was a tribute to harmony, strength, and the power of women to inspire across borders. With every race run and every goal scored, Miss World 2025 proved that beauty, indeed, lies in the unity of purpose and the courage to compete with compassion.

Fun and frolic mark sports day meant for Miss World contestants
Hyderabad, After back-to-back visits to various tourist destinations in Telangana, the Miss World 2025 contestants indulged in sports on Saturday. A celebratory mood filled Hyderabad's Gachibowli Indoor Stadium as the contestants practised yoga postures, then competed in badminton, chess, and other games for Sports Day on Saturday. It was fun and frolic all the way for the contestants as they cheered each other and treated themselves to friendly banter. Thoroughly enjoying the day, the participants also danced and waved to the crowds. Telangana Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla, and Miss World CEO Julia Morley attended the event at the indoor stadium. Speaking on the occasion, Shukla said the Sports Day, a unique combination of sports and Miss World, sends out a message of fitness, inspiring the younger generation to remain fit and be healthy, he said. Shukla, who hailed the mega event which saw participation of representatives from 109 countries and still more expected to join, appreciated the Telangana government for its endeavour in organising the pageant on such a grand scale. The visits of Miss World contestants to various tourist destinations in different districts would motivate rural people, he said. The Sports Minister, who declared the 72nd Miss World Sports Day open, hoped that the participants would become ambassadors of peace, love and prosperity for all humanity. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy would be introducing a new sports policy which prioritises sports development with a special focus on increasing women's participation, he said. As part of this vision, the state government is setting up the Young India Physical Education and Sports University to nurture hidden talent, particularly among the rural population, he said. This initiative would lead to greater women's empowerment and encourage more children to take up sports as a career, Krishna Rao said. He said the primary purpose of hosting the 72nd Miss World pageant in Telangana is to introduce the state to the global stage. Observing that tourism is one of the key industries that significantly contributes to job creation, he said exploring new places is also an act of social service as it paves the way for the generation of employment and livelihoods.
