Old Edwardians to hold 56th annual reunion in Taiping tomorrow

THE old boys of King Edward VII School in Taiping, Perak, will hold their 56th annual reunion dinner at Hotel Perdana in the town at 8pm tomorrow. Old Edwardian Association president Mohaideen Mohd Ishack said former students from several countries were expected to attend, including those residing in Singapore, Australia, United Kingdom and United States. 'The guest of honour at the dinner will be Old Edwardian Datuk Mohd Zaki Mahyudin, who is also Perak financial officer,' said Mohaideen. The school's 107th annual Sports Day will be held on the school field at 8.30am on the same day. Mohaideen said the Yeoh Teng Khoo Rugby Match between Old Edwardians and present school team will take place at the school field at 5pm today. The Edward Mai Hockey Match, also between old boys and current students, will be held simultaneously at the same field. Mohaideen said the association had spent about RM3,000 to repair the 120-year-old school gate. 'As it is made of cast iron, repairing and repainting it was quite costly,' he said, adding that the gate was presented by King Edward VII from England in 1905. As for the annual general meeting, it will be held at the association's premises at No.119, Jalan Station, at 10am on Sunday. For details, call Mohaideen at 019-578 4786.

#NSTviral: Paratrooper's surprise landing at Tawau kindergarten sports day charms Malaysians [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: A Royal Malaysian Navy sailor became an unexpected highlight at a kindergarten sports day after his parachute landing went off course and brought him down onto a hockey field filled with excited children and parents. The moment was captured in a TikTok video posted by user @zaynizz90, showing the lone parachutist drifting into view and landing relatively smoothly on the field. The caption read: "While attending my child's Sports Day at Little Caliphs, a Navy sailor unexpectedly landed on the hockey field after a parachute jump went off course. Still, well done to the sailor. "It definitely made the kids' day!" The sailor, identified by his arm badge as a member of the Royal Malaysian Navy's elite Special Warfare Forces (Paskal) unit, was believed to have been part of an inter-service and inter-agency parachuting demonstration during the Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) Carnival 2025, which took place in Tawau on June 28 and 29. Netizens flooded the video's comment section with amused and heart-warming reactions to the now-viral clip. "Oh, I thought when I saw it on my friend's WhatsApp Story, it was just a gimmick for her child's sports day closing ceremony. In my head, I was like, 'wow, how nice of the kindergarten to do a sports gimmick like this,'" Neena wrote. "That Navy guy became instantly famous. All the attention was on him," Reyna_amir wrote. Ameliasofea23 said: "Surely lots of people wanted to take pictures with him, haha." For some, the moment held deeper meaning. Mamadikabg wrote: "What a blessing for that child to witness a parachutist up close." "Sometimes it's 'accidents' like this that spark a child's dream of becoming a soldier," wrote AJZ_85.

‘Matter of great pride': Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami to launch sports university, 23 academies across 8 cities

NEW DELHI: Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is set to launch two initiatives for the development of sports and athletes, marking the fifth year of his tenure. The first is the establishment of a sports university in Haldwani, whose foundation is to be laid on Sports Day, and the other is the establishment of 23 sports academies across eight cities in the state. The academies will be established in cities like Dehradun, Haldwani, and Haridwar, where sports infrastructure was developed during the National Games. 'It is a matter of great pride that Uttarakhand is now being recognized as a land of sports. After the grand hosting of the National Games, the state has developed a positive sports environment. The morale of athletes is high, and they are performing well. The government will continue to take big decisions for the development of sports and implement them effectively,' said Pushkar Singh Dhami. The initiatives are taken up to better maintain the sports infrastructure that has already been created and to establish a solid platform for training athletes. Rapid progress is being made in both projects taken up by the government, with the notification for the university already being issued. The 38th National Games were held in Uttarakhand, with the state scoring a century of medals and ranking seventh in the medal tally. The event ultimately led to the establishment of sports infrastructure, marking a milestone in the field of sports. A new sports policy was announced in the state in 2021 that focused on encouraging athletes and included a provision of incentives ranging from Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crore for Olympic medal winners. The incentive amount has been doubled since then. Government jobs are also offered to athletes who win medals in national and international competitions.
