Mansoor bin Mohammed leads UAE delegation at 37th meeting of GCC National Olympic Committee Presidents
H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE National Olympic Committee, led the UAE delegation participating in the 37th meeting of the Presidents of the Olympic Committees of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries hosted by Kuwait. The UAE delegation included Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports, Vice President of the National Olympic Committee, and Chairman of The Executive Office; Dr Matar Hamed Al Neyadi, UAE Ambassador to Kuwait; Faris Mohammed Al Mutawa, Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee; and Noura Hassan Al Jasmi, Board Member of the Committee. The meeting approved the UAE's proposal to host the inaugural Sports Law and Management Conference in 2026, which is based on themes proactively developed by the National Olympic Committee. These include: the Olympic Charter – between the present and the future (legislative amendments and their impact on sports governance and management); sports management in the digital age (legal challenges and prospects for smart governance); the future of sports legislation (balancing integrity and regulatory independence); dispute resolution in Olympic sports (sports arbitration and contemporary legislation); financing and transparency in Olympic sport (legal frameworks and investment governance); and legal challenges within the framework of the Olympic Charter. It was also agreed to encourage active participation by GCC member states in the conference through the submission of research papers and case studies showcasing distinguished legal and administrative practices across the region. Discussions addressed funding strategies for the event, underscoring the importance of partnerships with private sector entities and government institutions to ensure a globally recognised conference delivered to the highest professional standards. The use of advanced technologies in the organisation of the event was also endorsed, including interactive applications, live streaming, and digital platforms to broaden engagement and maximise impact. The meeting further endorsed coordination between the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the UAE, in its capacity as Presiding Country for the forthcoming term and represented by the National Olympic Committee, to determine the date and venue for the 38th meeting of Presidents of the GCC Olympic Committees. This meeting will be preceded by the preparatory session of The Executive Office. As part of the proceedings of the 37th meeting, The Executive Office and relevant committees were mandated to review the final report of the 3rd GCC Beach Games, hosted by the Sultanate of Oman. The report will be assessed for its technical and organisational aspects, challenges, and recommendations, with appropriate actions to follow. The meeting also approved the State of Qatar as host of the 4th GCC Sports Games in 2026 and emphasised the need for comprehensive technical and logistical support from the Gulf Olympic Committees to the host nation. It further underlined the importance of enhancing women's participation, in line with the principles of inclusivity and equality across GCC sporting competitions. The request submitted by the Kuwait Olympic Committee to host the 2nd GCC Youth Games in 2028 was also approved, with emphasis placed on strict adherence to age-related technical regulations to ensure fairness and competitive balance among participating nations. The meeting also highlighted the importance of incorporating educational and cultural programmes alongside the Games, wherever feasible, to reinforce sportsmanship and Olympic values among youth. Support for female participation was likewise reaffirmed, in keeping with the GCC's broader commitment to empowering young Gulf women in sport. The Planning, Coordination and Follow-up Committee was authorised to continue preparations for the schedule of upcoming GCC multi-sport events for the years 2029 to 2032, ensuring alignment with international and regional sports calendars. Attendees also examined ways to maximise the impact of the Unified Digital Platform for Gulf Women's Sports, with the aim of ensuring its sustained success. The meeting approved the provision of full support from the Olympic Committees of the GCC member states, enabling the platform to fulfil its objectives. Member states will provide the platform's executive committee with all necessary data related to its digital identity, along with information on sports facilities and tourism landmarks across the GCC. These will serve as key components in promoting sports tourism among platform users. The meeting further approved the organisation of the Gulf Women's Sports Hackathon as an annual or periodic initiative under the supervision of the Advisory Committee for Women's Sports. The initiative seeks to foster innovation in the sector and promote participation by multidisciplinary teams from member states. Participants will receive support in the form of training and engagement opportunities, including workshops and advisory sessions conducted during the hackathon to guide projects and encourage knowledge exchange among experts. Awards will be presented to winning entries, and viable solutions will be supported for implementation at the GCC level. The results of the hackathon will be documented, and innovative ideas disseminated through digital platforms to enhance visibility and long-term impact. H.H. Sheikh Mansoor later attended a cultural and folklore event held at the Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre. Follow Emirates 24|7 on Google News.

Egypt's Sports law punishes inciting hatred, discrimination by prison, fine
Borg el-Arab Stadium in Alexandria, Egypt - CC via wikimedia commons CAIRO - 3 April 2025: In Egypt, sports law has taken a firm stance against actions that incite hatred, violence, or discrimination within the realm of sports. The law stipulates punishments that include both fines and potential prison sentences for those who incite hatred, aiming to foster a safer and more respectful environment for athletes, fans, and the broader community. As tensions in sports can sometimes spill over into harmful rhetoric, these measures serve as a clear deterrent against the spread of divisive sentiments. Egypt's Sports Law stipulates that, without prejudice to any more severe penalty stipulated in the Penal Code or any other law, the crimes stipulated in the following articles shall be punished by the penalties prescribed therein. "Anyone who insults, slanders, or humiliates, by word, shout, or gesture, a natural or legal person, or incites hatred or racial discrimination by any means, whether openly or publicly, during or on the occasion of a sports activity, shall be punished by imprisonment for a period of no less than one year and a fine of no less than 1,000 Egyptian pounds and no more than 3,000 Egyptian pounds, or by either of these two penalties." The law also stipulates that: "The penalty shall be doubled if the aforementioned acts are committed against an entity or body involved in securing a sports activity or one of its employees. Anyone who enters or attempts to enter a sports activity venue without the right to do so shall be punished by imprisonment for a period of no less than six months and a fine of no less than 500 Egyptian pounds and no more than 3,000 Egyptian pounds, or by either of these two penalties. The penalty shall be doubled if violence or threats are used to achieve this purpose."

Decision on Dani Olmo registration battle between Barcelona and La Liga expected imminently
Back in January, Barcelona secured a precautionary measure to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, but it could soon run out as the authority body that granted this has now announced that a final decision on their ongoing investigation will be made in the very near future. It was the Higher Sports Council (CSD) that granted Barcelona's request to temporarily register Olmo and Victor, which was strongly criticised by La Liga and a number of clubs in Spain. And since that date, they have been reviewing the matter with a view to making a final decision on whether to take away the precautionary measure. And now, the president of the Higher Sports Council, Jose Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, has confirmed that a final decision is due to be made very soon, with a deadline of the 7th of April having been set, as per MD. Uribes also spoke on the criticism that the Higher Sports Council received for granting a precautionary measure, and during this, he thanked Real Madrid for their reaction, which comes amid reports that Florentino Perez played a part in Barcelona successfully being able to register Olmo and Victor. 'Football is sometimes a lot of fun, they raise curious things. Real Madrid seem, according to some versions, to be delighted with Dani Olmo, this is the world turned upside down, but well, what Real Madrid did was respect the decision of the CSD and I appreciate it very much. By the way, not just Real Madrid, but 80% or 90% of the clubs understood it. 'What there has been here is a discrepancy, a disagreement, a conflict, call it what you want, between FC Barcelona, La Liga and the Federation and we as the Higher Sports Council feel obliged, in accordance with the Sports Law that says that athletes must always be protected, to take care that the players are not harmed by this conflict.'

'It's a hoax' – Javier Tebas reacts to reports of Real Madrid leaving La Liga
Real Madrid have become infuriated with the state of refereeing in La Liga over the last couple of weeks, which everyone in Spanish football has become aware. The latest incident to cause ire was the red card shown to Jude Bellingham during last weekend's 1-1 draw at Osasuna, a result that has since led to them being replaced at the top of the standings by Barcelona. On the back of this, there has been reports that Real Madrid would consider moving away from La Liga to play their domestic football in another country. However, this possibility has not even been entertained by the league's president, Javier Tebas (via Marca). 'It's a hoax – it is impossible, and they know it themselves. There is a Sports Law that says that clubs in Spain have to play in the national competitions on a mandatory basis. It is counted to reaffirm the strategy they are following, so which league are they going to go to?' Tebas also spoke on criticism of the refereeing establishment, and he made specific reference to the actions of Real Madrid TV. 'The refereeing system can be improved, but it is not adulterated. When the Negreira issue came up, a meeting was held with the clubs and it was considered to change the system so that it would not depend on an organisation, a meeting that Real Madrid did not attend. Here is a story to destroy the National League. If all the clubs had television, this would be hell.' Finally, Tebas spoke on the recent shocking incident involving two Villarreal supporters that were attacked prior to last weekend's 1-1 draw against Valencia at La Ceramica. 'We have to be very forceful, I hope that the worst falls on the perpetrators. Until they are convicted, La Liga will be behind this situation.'
