Clement had a three-run home run and a two-run double, both in an eight-run second inning in the opener of a four-game series. Bo Bichette had a two-run homer and three RBIs, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added a two-run homer and George Springer had a solo shot. Clement's five RBIs in the second tied a club record for an inning, according to Sportsnet Stats. Edwin Encarnacion had five RBIs in the seventh inning against the Houston Astros on July 26, 2013. The five RBIs were also a career-best. Clement and Alejandro Kirk each had three hits for the Blue Jays, who had 18 hits in winning their second in a row. The Athletics have lost 14 of 15. Berrios (2-2) allowed two hits and two walks while matching his season best in strikeouts. Seven of the second-inning runs were charged to left-hander Jacob Lopez (0-3), who allowed six hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings. Kirk led off the second with a single, struggling Anthony Santander walked on four pitches and Clement homered to left center on a first-pitch slider that stayed in the middle of the plate. Jonatan Clase singled to extend his hit streak to six games, stole second and scored on Bichette's double to center. Guerrero homered to left center on a fastball over the plate to extend his on-base streak to 29 games. Springer singled and Anthony Madonado replaced Lopez. Kirk singled, Santander walked and Clement stroked a two-run double to left. Toronto added three runs in the third against Maldonado. Clase walked and Bichette hit a two-run homer to left. Blue Jays reach historic low in embarrassing loss to Red Sox
The post Blue Jays reach historic low in embarrassing loss to Red Sox appeared first on ClutchPoints. Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Chris Bassitt entered Saturday's game versus the Boston Red Sox with a 3.61 ERA this season, and a 2.31 ERA in eight starts against the American League East foe. When he exited the mound, both of those numbers had ballooned. The lineup did not do him any favors, either, as John Schneider's ballclub had a day to forget in Fenway Park. Alas, the dreadful outing will be etched in the history books. Advertisement The Blue Jays fell 15-1 to the Rex Sox, marking the largest margin of defeat the franchise has ever suffered in Boston, per Sportsnet Stats. What a dramatic reversal of fortunes after Friday's 9-0 victory. Toronto actually started off on a promising note, as Bassitt retired the first two batters he faced. A gritty Abraham Toro at-bat, which resulted in a single, eventually gave way to a three-run Wilyer Abreu home run. From thereon, the game was woefully out of reach. Bassitt allowed eight runs on eight hits and walked four batters in just two innings of work. The bullpen struggled as well, resulting in an eye-popping amount of Red Sox runs. This outcome is ghastly even in a vacuum, but it is especially mind-boggling when considering how feeble Boston's lineup has been lately. The team had scored only four runs in the last 28 innings, with Rafael Devers' departure looming uncomfortably large. The Jays' bats were unable to generate any momentum in the batter's box, mustering just six hits off Lucas Giolito and none off the returning Chris Murphy (first appearance since September of 2023). They must quickly shake off this rough showing in Fenway and come back strong for the rubber match. A big series is on the horizon for the Blue Jays Toronto (44-38) is still a few games clear of the danger zone in the AL Wild Card race, currently occupying the second slot, and only three games behind the AL-East leading New York Yankees. This squad has accomplished all that despite battling considerable injury troubles, and thus deserves ample praise. Advertisement But the Blue Jays cannot relent now. They are entering a pivotal stretch on their schedule, with a four-game series against the Yankees beginning next week. True contenders capitalize on these opportunities, and if Toronto is going to reach that level, it must weather this potential storm. While there is no need to worry yet, Sunday's face-off with the Red Sox (41-43) feels more important than the standings may suggest. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. ET. Blue Jays' George Springer pulls off a career first in Cardinals series opener
The post Blue Jays' George Springer pulls off a career first in Cardinals series opener appeared first on ClutchPoints. Notwithstanding their series finale 6-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins on the road on Sunday, the Toronto Blue Jays are one of the best teams of late in the big leagues. They have won eight of their last 10 games going into Monday, the most in that span among teams in the American League. Advertisement Also having a good time of late is Blue Jays outfielder George Springer, who extended a hitting streak to five games with an RBI double in the first inning of Monday's series opener versus the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. With that hit, Springer has managed to reach an extra base in five games in a row now, the first time he's done such a feat in his career in the big leagues, according to Sportsnet Stats. Springer took on the first pitch he saw from Cardinals right-hander Andre Pallante, then got a strike on the second one. Both pitches were 88 mph sliders that went toward the right side of the strike zone. On Pallante's third offering, Springer finally made contact on a 94 mph sinker, spraying the ball to the left field, as Addison Barger scored and Alejandro Kirk moved to third base. Advertisement The 35-year-old Springer has been seeing action in the big leagues since 2014, when he was still with the Houston Astros. He suited up for the Astros for the first seven years of his time in MLB, earning three All-Star nods along the way before signing a six-year contract worth $150 million with the Blue Jays in 2021. He's been in the big leagues for over a decade, so it may be a bit surprising that this is just the first time Springer, who will turn 36 in September, has managed to put together such a streak. In any case, Blue Jays fans must be happy to see (or learn) that Springer appears to be having a power surge in the 2025 MLB season. In 2024, he had a 3.1 percent home run rate and a hard hit rate of 37.5 percent to go with a .371 slugging percentage. Entering the Cardinals series, Springer had a .487 slugging percentage, a 4.2 HR% and a 50.7 2 HardH%, per Baseball-Reference. Pacers' Bennedict Mathurin Makes NBA History in Game 3 vs. Thunder
Pacers' Bennedict Mathurin Makes NBA History in Game 3 vs. Thunder originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Game 3 did not feature the result the Oklahoma City Thunder wanted. One of the biggest reasons for that was a spectacular performance off the Indiana Pacers' bench by Bennedict Mathurin. Advertisement The Pacers secured a 2-1 lead in the 2025 NBA Finals behind a competitive 116-107 win over the Thunder at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The Thunder pulled ahead early following a 32-24 first quarter. However, the Pacers stormed back. The decisive part of this game was the fourth quarter for Indiana. The Pacers outscored the Thunder 32-18 in the final frame to maintain the homecourt advantage they stole in Oklahoma City. The Pacers wing led all scorers in Game 3 with 27 points. That helped him set some NBA history in the process. According to Sportsnet Stats, Mathurin set the new mark for most points off the bench by a Canadian in an NBA Finals game. The Pacers youngster eclipsed the previous mark held by Kelly Olynyk, who had 24 points in Game 2 of the 2020 NBA Finals. Advertisement Mathurin shot an efficient 9-of-12 from the field in the victory. That included 2-of-3 from the 3-point line. The Canadian wing also connected on 7-of-8 free throw attempts in this game. After only dropping 5 points in Game 1 of the series, Mathurin has now registered double-digit scoring outings in back-to-back games for the Pacers. The bench spark plug scored 14 in Game 2, leading up to this 27-point performance in Game 3. Mathurin is playing in his first playoff run with the Pacers after missing last year's trip to the Eastern Conference Finals due to injury. The Thunder would be wise to not let the young scorer pick up momentum as this series progresses.
