Haverstraw man charged with robbing Spring Valley store; officer hurt after scuffle

SPRING VALLEY - A 37-year-old Haverstraw man has been charged with a knife-point robbery of a convenience store and then fighting with an officer, who suffered minor injuries. Edwin L. Pickering was arrested on Saturday, July 12, after the Open Every Day store at 29 S. Main St. was robbed of unreported proceeds at 4 p.m., police said Monday, July 14. An officer responded to what originally was reported as a larceny but ascertained after talking with the cashier that a man brandished an orange box cutter-type knife, Detective Sgt. Randy DiPaolo said in a news release. A short time later, a patrol officer saw Pickering on North Main Street, not far from the store and attempted to detain him, DiPaolo said. Ramapo officers injured: Two Ramapo cops injured arresting driver during traffic stop. What happened Pickering ran from the officer and was caught after a chase, but continued to resist arrest, DiPaolo said. During the struggle, the officer gained control of what turned out to be the box cutter supposedly used during the robbery, DiPaolo said. The officer eventually tossed the box cutter to the side but was injured in the scuffle as more officers arrived to help. Pickering didn't claim any injuries and refused further evaluation or treatment by EMS, DiPaolo said. Officers charged Pickering with felony counts of first-degree robbery and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Officers also charged him with misdemeanors of resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration, as well as a disorderly conduct violation. Pickering was remanded to the Rockland County Jail in New City after arraignment. Squatters target vacant home in Spring Valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Squatters are targeting a vacant home in Spring Valley. According to the listing agent, the home is a probate listing, and the late owner's family is handling the issues from out of state. 'Somehow, these dangerous people got a whiff that it's vacant, and we started noticing some activity in there,' said the realtor, who wanted to remain anonymous for her safety. She told 8 News Now she has called police at least 10 times, but trespassing has continued at the property. Surveillance footage provided to 8 News Now shows various vehicles on the property that do not belong to the homeowner. 'We've changed the locks like a million times,' she said. 'The same kind of vehicles that we've been able to monitor, like SUVs and sedans, that keep coming around — they slow down, and they see someone on the watch and take off.' Even a U-Haul was captured on camera in front of the property. 'One time, they said they were coming in here to install flooring because the owner had ordered it,' the realtor said. 'We're like, 'No, we're on the phone with the owner now. She never ordered flooring, so we're going to call the cops.' And they ran.' Another senior neighbor told 8 News Now the problem at the home has been taking place for about a year and continues to get progressively worse. 'We're a small area, four houses on a cul-de-sac, so we're just concerned about what's going on in the property,' she said. Both women told 8 News Now the trespassers appear to be trying to take over the home, and someone even had power activated through NV Energy. 'I was infuriated,' the realtor said. 'We did not authorize any power. This is why we were keeping the power off. So we don't attract squatters.' 8 News Now reached out to NV Energy regarding the claims of power being activated without the owner's consent and is awaiting a response. The realtor started the eviction process. In Nevada, the formal process includes providing squatters with a formal written notice. If they still do not leave, a lawsuit can be filed to remove occupants. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Spring Valley high school student detained by ICE after immigration hearing, dad says

Spring Valley high schooler has been in ICE detention for weeks, father says Spring Valley high schooler has been in ICE detention for weeks, father says Spring Valley high schooler has been in ICE detention for weeks, father says A high school student from Spring Valley is heading into his fifth week in an ICE detention center. Adam Pierre was leaving an immigration hearing in Lower Manhattan on June 4 when, his father and attorney say, he was surrounded by masked federal agents, handcuffed and taken away. His father, Dutan Pierre, was waiting for Adam outside. After five hours, he says he got a call that his son was not coming home. "He followed the lawful pathways" Pierre is a native of Haiti and a United States citizen. He sponsored his son, expecting fast approval because of his own status and the fact Adam is under the age 21. Pierre says Adam says no criminal history and is a good student who plays basketball and football. Vince Sykes, the family's attorney, says Adam entered the country legally. "He followed the lawful pathways," he said. "He went to his immigration court appearance. That's where it happened. That's where he was picked up." Sykes added, "[Adam] said the very first week, all he had was bread and water. That's all they gave them. He said that's since changed." Rev. Jean Claude Dorcelly says fear is palpable in Spring Valley, with some people in hiding, avoiding doctors, workplaces, schools and more. "They're scared to come to church," he said. Student missed finals, summer school deadline Sykes says his client is terrified. "I know it's very hard on him. I know this kid is going to be traumatized," he said. Adam's high school education is now stalled. He missed all his finals, and he was unable to meet a deadline to try to catch up in summer school. "If we had gotten him out, say, last week or whatever, he would have joined up on the summer school program," Sykes said. "I'm very bad ... I cannot sleep," Pierre said. "Give me my son back." Friday morning, CBS News New York emailed an ICE chief about the status of this case and requested an update from the Department of Homeland Security. Neither has responded at this time. Adam is one of several local students who have been taken into ICE custody. In early June, ICE agents detained an 11th grader from Queens outside a local courthouse during a scheduled immigration appointment, and in late May, a Bronx high school student was taken into custody following an immigration hearing.

Spring Valley man sentenced to life in prison for murdering man in kitchen knife attack

SPRING VALLEY - A 30-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison this week for the stabbing murder of a man found lying in the street after leaving a bar in 2022. A Rockland County Court jury convicted Oscar Garcia-Garcia of second-degree murder in March following a three-week-long trial before County Court Judge Kevin Russo. Russo sentenced Garcia-Garcia to a prison term of 25 years to life on Wednesday, July 2. A jury found the prosecution's evidence proved that Garcia-Garcia was responsible for the death of Luis Pinduisaca-Villa, 54, on Dec. 29, 2022, the Rockland District Attorney's Office said in a statement on Wednesday, July 2. Prosecuted contended that Garcia-Garcia followed Pinduisaca-Villa after he left the bar at about 1 a.m. and stabbed him in the throat area with a large kitchen knife. A pedestrian found Pinduisaca-Villa's body lying in the middle of the road a short time after the stabbing. A Spring Valley police investigation with the Sheriff's Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation collected blood evidence, articles of clothing and a large kitchen knife. The investigation led the police to interview Garcia-Garcia on Dec. 29, 2022, when he admitted to stabbing Pinduisacra-Villa. No information on what led to the fatal stabbing has been released by the police or prosecutors. The case was prosecuted by First Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Devlin and Executive Assistant District Attorney Michael Peterson. Attorney Jeffrey Schonbrun represented Garcia-Garcia. Spring Valley, N.Y. man arraigned for crash that killed 4-year-old girl on sidewalk with family

The man arrested for a fatal crash in Spring Valley, New York that killed a 4-year-old girl and severely injured three of her family members pleaded not guilty at his arraignment. Axel Lopez-Santiago wore an orange jumpsuit to his court appearance Friday in Rockland County after being charged with DWI and aggravated vehicular homicide in the death of 4-year-old Goldy Eisenbach. Goldy Eisenbach Eisenbach Family Police said Lopez-Santiago, 41, was drunk behind the wheel during the June 14 crash on Old Nyack Turnpike, where the girl and her family were struck on a sidewalk while leaving Kennedy Park. He suddenly veered across the double yellow line and struck at least four people before crashing into a tree, investigators said. He also faces second degree manslaughter, assault and reckless driving charges. "Insane, traumatic and horrific scene" Lopez-Santiago sat in a wheelchair as prosecutors said his blood alcohol content was .19 -- more than twice New York's legal limit -- two hours after the crash. Police said Lopez-Santiago struck four members of Yisroel Eisenbach's family, including Goldy, his daughter. "It looked literally like a bomb. I see a stroller on end, a yarmulke, the wheel of the stroller on the other end, and the car between a gate and a tree. It literally looked like a bomb and I didn't know what happened," Eisenbach's said. "EMTs showed up. They are first on the scene. There are bodies everywhere. It is an insane, traumatic and horrific scene." "He destroyed many, many, many families," said Moishe Eisenbach. 3 crash victims, including 2 children, seriously injured Three of the people struck in the crash, including two other children, survived with serious injuries. An injured adult, named Abraham, remained hospitalized in critical condition with an array of broken bones. Abraham's wife, Trana Loeffler, was on the sidewalk the night of the crash, but not struck. She said seeing the suspect in court brought her to peace. "I had to see him in cuffs to be able to get him out of my face, out of my mind, o be able to sleep better at night, because I'm so scared of him. Now I see that he is in jail and he's not getting any bail, I'm more relieved," Loeffler said. Goldy Eisenbach Eisenbach Family Eisenbach said his daughter "always wanted to be a peacemaker, always had a smile on her face, and always wanted to make others smile." "It's not easy losing a loved one, especially a tragic incident like that," he said. Lopez-Santiago is due back in court July 19. contributed to this report.
