May filing wraps up, several local races contested

Filing wrapped up earlier this month, making the ballots set for the May 3 General Election. Here's who will be on the ballot. Weatherford Mayor Paul Paschall filed for reelection, and is challenged by Will Montgomery. Paschall was first elected to the post in May of 2019, and ran unopposed in the 2022 election. Montgomery is a 16-year Weatherford businessman, according to his application. Weatherford ISD has one contested seat open. Place 4 Greg Shaw initially filed for reelection but withdrew, according to the district. Devon Flowers, Samuel Stephens and Dan Woods will now both be vying for the position. Incumbents Adam Feriend (Place 3), Wally Wallace (Place 5) and Kindra Lucia (Place 6) have also filed. Two city of Aledo spots will have challengers in the seats for mayor and city council Place 2. Mayor Nick Stanley was first elected to the position in May 2022, against Shane Davis, who has filed to challenge Stanley once again. In Place 2, incumbent Christian Pearson is being challenged by Todd Covington. Aledo ISD has two contested seats up for election. Place 4 trustee Forrest Collins is being challenged by Jeremiah Stoker. A four-way contest for the Place 5 seat, with all newcomers filing, features Leia Brown, Miles Lewis, Lynn Morgan and Kelli Stahl. Two challengers will look to unseat Willow Park Mayor Doyle Moss, with Teresa Palmer and Catherine Davis filing to run. Moss has served as mayor of Willow Park since 2017. WP City Council's Place 2, occupied by Eric Contreras, is now two-way, after David Allen filed to run. Millsap ISD has three vying for two three-year terms, in incumbent Heidi Ritthaler, Ryan Shands and Sunny Bates. The district is also holding a special election for a one-year term, with Shelby Humphrey and Whittney Gilbert filing. Each of three races for Springtown ISD will be on the ballot. Derek Miles and Elizabeth 'Tootie' Hall are running for Place 1; Place 2 incumbent Damon Liles is facing a challenge by Matthew Jones; and Teresa Kelley and Wendy Kennedy are both vying for Place 3. Springtown ISD voters will have the opportunity to weigh in on a $98 million bond proposal. The proposition includes building a new elementary school, renovations to Springtown Elementary, a science and Career and Technology Education addition at Springtown Middle School, upgraded CTE equipment and facilities, safety and security and new buses. According to the district, enrollment has increased by nearly 600 students in the last four years, with another 400 expected in the next four years. If passed, the bond would provide additional seats, classrooms, and buildings to accommodate this growth. The expected financial impact of the bond would be $12.78 a month on a home valued at $300,000 in Springtown ISD. The city of Springtown has one contested race, with former SISD Superintendent Mike Kelley challenging incumbent Richelle Pruitt. A special election will be held for the citizens of Reno to decide whether the city will disincorporate. The city council earlier this month approved an ordinance calling for the special election after a petition from more than 400 registered voters was filed with the city and the Parker County Elections office in December. If approved, the proposition would abolish the corporative existence of the city of Reno. A three-candidate race for two seats on the Strawn City Council is the only contest in Palo Pinto County in the May 3 election. County Elections Administrator Laura Watkins said other cities and schools will be canceling their elections. Santo and Palo Pinto ISDs hold their elections in November. In Mineral Wells, two incumbents and two newcomers are uncontested on the ballot. Incumbents seeking fresh two-year terms are Kyle Wayne Kelley in Place 1 and Glenn Mitchell in Place 2. Those are elected at large to represent the whole city. Banker Charles Ramsay is uncontested to represent Ward 2, which is northwest Mineral Wells including the Fort Wolters Army Base. Local realtor Mike Rankin will represent Ward 4, southwest Mineral Wells including downtown south of First Street. In Strawn, incumbents Dewaine Lee and Alan Alison and former council member Brenda Orsini will vie for two seats in the at-large election. Orsini lists her occupation as homemaker, Lee is the superintendent of Strawn ISD and Alison is a golf course manager and equipment dealer. The last day to register to vote in the May election is April 3. Applications for mail-in ballots must be received, not merely postmarked, by April 22.
