Heartbreaking twist in Gene Hackman tragedy as cops release new details about acting legend's final days after wife died
THE final autopsy of Gene Hackman tragically revealed that the Hollywood icon had not eaten for an extended period of time before his death. Heartbreaking video showed the moment Santa Fe Sheriff's officials arrived at Hackman 's estate in New Mexico on February 26 to find the 95-year-old actor and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, dead. 6 6 6 6 The bodies of the longtime couple were found mummified in different sections of their expansive property before it was determined that Hackman and Arakawa died almost a week apart. An official autopsy report ruled that Arakawa died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease that is transmitted from exposure to rodent urine, droppings, and saliva. An autopsy for Hackman determined that the Academy Award -winning actor died from significant heart disease, with Alzheimer's as a contributing factor. Hackman, who tested negative for hantavirus, had a history of congestive heart failure and severe chronic hypertensive changes, according to the report. The medical report also showed that Hackman had no food in his system and had traces of acetone, which is consistent with prolonged fasting. Arakawa is believed to have died around February 12, while Hackman died around February 18. Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Heather Jarrell said that due to Hackman's advanced Alzheimer's disease, it was possible he did not know his wife had died and that her body was in their home. HEARTBREAKING FIND Bodycam footage released by the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office showed the moment deputies arrived at the puzzling scene, where one of the couple's German Shepherd dogs was guarding Arakawa's body. "Poor guy, he's sad," one of the deputies can be heard saying in the video. A separate video showed the moment investigators find Hackman's body in a separate section of the property. Heartbreaking footage of Gene Hackman's wife Betsy in last hours alive wearing mask while she shopped in pharmacy "Two totally separate areas of the house," a deputy said as another responded, "Mhm, it's strange." One of the couple's three dogs was also found dead in a crate in a bathroom closet near where Arakawa was found. The other two dogs were alive as one is heard barking in the background. 6 6 FINAL SIGHTING Two weeks before the shocking discovery, Arakawa was captured on surveillance footage keeping herself busy, running errands on February 11. Video showed Arakawa, wearing blue jeans, a dark coat, a scarf, and a black face mask, at a Sprouts Grocery Market self-checkout, purchasing groceries at around 4 pm. Minutes later, Arakawa was then seen on video stopping by Shine Pet Food store. The videos showed Arakawa was unaccompanied as she entered and exited the businesses without any glaring health ailments. The surveillance videos were part of a trove of documents released by the Santa Fe Sheriff's Office on April 15 as part of their investigation into the deaths of Hackman and Arakawa. Included in the recently released records were emails, phone calls, and internet searches by Arakawa, which indicted she had been scouring for information on flu-like symptoms and breathing techniques. Between February 8 and the morning of February 12, Arakawa searched on her computer for medical conditions related to Covid-19 and flu-like symptoms. The searches included questions about whether Covid-19 could cause dizziness or nosebleeds. In an email to her therapist on February 11, Arakawa said Hackman had woke up that morning with flu and cold-like symptoms but tested negative for Covid-19. In her message, she asked her therapist to reschedule her February 12 appointment for the following day "out of an abundance of caution." Gene Hackman's family's full statement Gene Hackman's family has spoken out on the actor's death after he was found dead with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, in their Santa Fe home. Hackman's daughters, Elizabeth and Leslie, and his granddaughter, Annie, released the statement. "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy," Elizabeth, Leslie, and Annie Hackman said. "He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us he was always just Dad and Grandpa. "We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss."

Gene Hackman's cause of death confirmed two months after star was found dead at home with wife Betsy
GENE Hackman's official cause of death has been revealed after the Hollywood actor was found dead at his mansion in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Oscar-winning actor was found dead alongside his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, and one of their dogs on February 26. 8 8 8 A caretaker raised the alarm after spotting Arakawa lying on the flood as he looked through a window of the property. The bodies of Hackman, 95, and Arakawa were found in different sections of their expansive home after sheriff officials responded to a welfare check at the property. Authorities later confirmed Hackman died of 'significant' heart disease, with Alzheimer's as a contributing factor, while Arakawa is believed to have died a week earlier from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Official documents state: "Autopsy showed severe atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease, with placement of coronary artery stents and a bypass graft, as well as a previous aortic valve replacement." Investigators previously described how they believed the couple died days apart, and due to Hackman's advanced Alzheimer's, it is possible he did not know his wife was dead. Heartbreaking surveillance footage was also found to have captured the final movements of Gene Hackman's wife Betsy Arakawa weeks before the couple's mummified bodies were found on their sprawling New Mexico estate. Two weeks before investigators stumbled upon the grim findings, Arakawa was captured on video keeping herself busy and running errands. Surveillance footage showed Arakawa at a Sprouts Grocery Market self-checkout, purchasing groceries at around 4 pm on February 11. Arakawa is captured on video wearing blue jeans, a dark coat, a scarf, and a black face mask. Minutes later, Arakawa was seen on video stopping by Shine Pet Food store. The surveillance videos showed Arakawa was unaccompanied as she entered and exited the businesses without any glaring health ailments. The videos were part of a trove of documents released by the Santa Fe Sheriff's Office on Tuesday as part of their investigation into the deaths of Hackman and Arakawa. 8 8 8 HARROWING FIND Bodycam footage released by the Santa Fe Sheriff's Office showed the moment responding deputies arrived at the puzzling scene, where one of the couple's German Shepherd dogs was guarding Arakawa's body. "Poor guy, he's sad," one of the investigators can be heard saying. A separate video showed the moment investigators find Hackman's body in a separate section of the property. "Two totally separate areas of the house," a deputy is heard saying, as another responds, "Mhm, it's strange." One of the couple's three dogs was also found dead in a crate in a bathroom closet near where Arakawa's body was found. The other two dogs were alive as one is heard barking in the background. The video also showed deputies going through the rooms of the estate, checking for any signs of forced entry or foul play. Investigators were seen counting cash that was found around the home, looking at prescription medication on one of the bathroom counters, and check the kitchen's stove after any potential gas leak. The leak concerns lead investigators to begin opening doors and windows around the house. A separate video showed technicians inspecting the home for signs of a gas or carbon monoxide leak. However, a thorough inspection showed there were no leaks. 8 8

Gene Hackman's wife Betsy seen on surveillance footage in last public appearance the day before she died
Gene Hackman's wife Betsy was seen making a final public appearance before her untimely death in surveillance footage released by New Mexico officials on Tuesday. Betsy, a k a Betsy Arakawa, is believed to have died on Feb. 12 at the Santa Fe home she shared with Hackman, according to New Mexico Medical Examiner Dr. Heather Jarrell, who has also revealed that the classical pianist's cause of death was hantavirus — a rare rodent-borne illness. On Feb. 11, security footage obtained by The Sun showed Arakawa, 65, purchasing groceries at a Sprouts Grocery Market self-checkout in Santa Fe at approximately 4 p.m. The video, made public by the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, also confirmed earlier reports that Arakawa wore a face mask on the shopping trip. The Oscar-winner's wife was seen minutes later at a nearby Shine Pet Food store. Arakawa shopped solo in the footage and did not appear to behave unusually in any way. Earlier that day, she emailed her therapist to cancel her Feb. 12 appointment 'out of an abundance of caution' because Hackman, 95, had woken up with flu or cold-like symptoms, though she said he tested negative for COVID. Arakawa was the primary caretaker for the 'French Connection' star in his final days. Records including emails, phone calls and internet searches released by law enforcement revealed she had researched COVID symptoms and considered seeking medical care for her husband in the days before she died. Questions about whether COVID could cause dizziness or nosebleeds were among Arakawa's online searches. Her final internet search on Feb. 12 was for local health care providers. Hackman, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease, died at home on Feb. 17 or Feb. 18 and may not have known his wife had been dead for days in the same house. Officials said last month that Hackman's cause of death was hypertensive atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer's disease listed as a contributing factor. Arakawa and Hackman's bodies were not discovered until maintenance workers visited their home on February 26. The couple were recently laid to rest after a private memorial honoring them was held in Santa Fe by their family and friends, The Post learned Tuesday.
