Open Day at SJCE showcases student innovations

Mysuru: A footfall of more than 8,000 visitors were recorded at 'Open Day 2025', an initiative by JSS Science and Technology University and Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) which was held on the SJCE premises on Saturday. CG Betsurmath, executive secretary of JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru, inaugurated the Open Day and launched a 'Virtual Tour' application. The application created by students was designed to assist attendees in navigating the Open Day campus events. Live demonstrations of student projects and working models were presented, along with a variety of competitions, including model exhibitions, poster presentations and prototype displays. Engineering students participated in project presentation competitions, while department exhibits were evaluated by a panel of judges. A major crowd-puller was the air show facilitated by the department of mechanical engineering at the KSCA Grounds. 21-year-old develops smart device for women's safety in public spaces in Karnataka

MYSURU: Keeping women's safety in public spaces in mind, a 21-year-old final-year student from the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) in Mysuru has developed an innovative Intelligent Geofence-enabled Wearable System (IGWS) that can relay alerts to the user's emergency contacts in case of deviation, along with her location, in real-time. Geofencing allows creating a virtual geographic boundary around an area using global positioning system (GPS) or radio-frequency identification (RFID) – a technology using radio waves to automatically identify and track items or people – and enables the software to trigger responses when the device carrying that software enters or leaves the area. The youth, Karan D, told The New Sunday Express at the Open Day 2025 at the SJCE campus on Saturday where he showcased his smart wearable device, that the device enhances safety by allowing users to define 'safe zones' (geofences) and enabling pre-designated emergency contacts to receive alerts when user enters or leaves these areas. 'One of the key features is a geofence-based stranger-following detector,' said Karan. 'If a woman is being followed by someone for more than three minutes, the device detects the persisting presence of the same mobile phone (of the suspected stalker) or Bluetooth MAC address (also known as a Bluetooth Device Address, a unique identifier assigned to each Bluetooth device, which can help identify and locate devices during communication).

Acclaimed Mysuru tech entrepreneur kills wife and son in US, dies by suicide

A Mysuru-based tech entrepreneur has fatally shot his wife and one of his sons before taking his own life in New Castle, Washington, where the family lived. The deceased are Harshavardhana S Kikkeri, 57, who was CEO of HoloWorld, a robotics company headquartered in Mysuru's Vijayanagar Third Stage; Shwetha Panyam, 44, his wife and co-founder of HoloWorld; and their 14-year-old son. The couple's younger son has survived the incident that occurred on April 24. According to the King County Sheriff's Office, deputies who responded to a 911 call discovered three bodies inside Harsha's home. The motive behind the crime is yet to be revealed. HoloWorld, set up in 2018, closed its operations in 2022. Harsha was originally from Kikkeri village in Mandya district. A graduate of Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering in Mysuru, he had worked with Microsoft in the US, specialising in robotics. In 2017, he and Shwetha returned to India and co-founded HoloWorld. The company made headlines in 2018 for creating HoloSuit, an innovative, wireless, full-body motion capture suit. With applications in sports, education, healthcare, and more, HoloWorld's products were exported globally, including to the US, the UK, and Israel. Shwetha served as the company's chairperson. Harsha's work gained recognition at the national level—he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to pitch using robots for border security. He was also active in the Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) community and often delivered talks on robotics and innovation.
