The year the St. Patrick's Day Parade went dark

SIOUX FALL, S.D. (KELO) – The 45th annual Sioux Falls St. Patrick's Day Parade will cover Phillips Avenue in green tomorrow afternoon. Attendees might want to hold on tight to their shamrocks due to the windy and wintry storm system in the forecast. Organizers say the parade will go on, though, no matter the weather. How investigators found missing 1-year-old boy 'We've marched in everything over the years: rain, sleet, snow, 70 degrees, t-shirts, so we're hardy people. We'll figure it out,' Shawn Cleary, the 2025 Grand Marshal, said on they might be able to handle whatever Mother Nature throws at them, just five years ago something *did dim the green. The St. Patrick's Day Parade was one of the first Sioux Falls events to get cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and it didn't return until 2022. The parade has been going strong since then, though, and it doesn't look like that'll be changing this year. 'And being Irish, we're always going to look at the positive side. The moisture might bring us a little green around here, but absolutely we've seen it all and we're going to carry on and have a great time,' Ryan Murphy, St. Patrick's Day Extravaganza Committee Chair, said on Tuesday. Other events on Saturday include the painting of the Shamrock at 11 a.m. at 9th and Phillips. The parade starts at 2 p.m., but if you don't want to brave the weather, you can watch it live here on our website. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. St. Patrick's Day grand marshal ready to celebrate

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Downtown Sioux Falls will look a lot greener this weekend. The 45th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade will take over Phillips Avenue Saturday afternoon. Shawn Cleary joined the St. Patrick's Day Extravaganza Committee 16 years ago, serving as chair for a majority of those years. 'I'm involved with the Irish community since we moved here in 1998, with Irish fairs and things like that, so the parade was a good thing to get involved with and help out,' Cleary said. But this year, Cleary has a new title: grand marshal of the parade. He was nominated by a group of former grand marshals. 'To be added to that list is quite an honor,' Cleary. The parade takes off from 13th and Phillips at 2:00 PM Saturday. Parade participants and watchers could be in for an interesting celebration as a wet and windy storm system is forecast to sweep through the area Saturday. But the festivities are expected to carry on. 'We've marched in everything over the years: rain, sleet, snow, 70 degrees, t-shirts, so we're hardy people. We'll figure it out,' Cleary said. 'And being Irish, we're always going to look at the positive side. The moisture might bring us a little green around here, but absolutely we've seen it all and we're going to carry on and have a great time,' Murphy said. Cleary will lead the way as grand marshal. 'We're all Americans, but we all have ancestral cultures that we came from. We all came from somewhere, and I think part of celebrating those family cultures is a fun thing to do,' Cleary said. Other events on Saturday include the painting of the Shamrock at 11:00 AM at 9th and Phillips. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
