'It is a place where children flourish' tribute as school leader steps down
After chalking up more than 20 years at one of Bolton's 'fantastic school, governor Phil Ashcroft has stepped down as chairman at St Bernard's RC Primary.
Mr Ashcroft, a former councillor, said it was an honour to serve the school and paid tribute to fellow governors, staff and pupils.
Mr Ashcroft said: "When I was first elected to the Governing Board in 2003, I could never have imagined the transformation we would witness, the challenges we would overcome, and the successes we would celebrate together.
"First and foremost, I want to express my deepest gratitude to governors past and present, staff, parents, and, of course, the children—who are the heart of this school. It has been a privilege to serve a school that means so much to so many, and I am incredibly proud of everything we have achieved together.
"I would like to pay special tribute to Claire Doodson, an inspirational and truly dedicated head, Clare's leadership, passion, and unwavering commitment to the children and staff of St Bernard's have left an indelible mark on this school. Working alongside her was both an honour and a pleasure, and her vision has helped shape St Bernard's into the school it is today.

"When I think back to the school I first joined in 2003, it was a 'child of the 70s.' Over the years, we have seen massive changes that have transformed it into a modern, single year group school that can rival any around. These improvements didn't happen overnight—they were the result of dedication, hard work, and the shared commitment of governors, staff, and the wider school community."
He added: "Of course, our journey hasn't been without its challenges. The situation with RAAC concrete has brought uncertainty, but it has also presented us with a remarkable opportunity—the potential for a brand-new school building. While the road ahead may still hold obstacles, I have no doubt that with the strength and resilience of this community, St Bernard's will emerge even stronger, ready to provide the very best for future generations of pupils.
"Now, as we look to the future, we do so with excitement and optimism. We are delighted to welcome our new headteacher, Kirstin (Taylor), who brings fresh energy, passion, and fantastic ideas to continue building on our successes. Kirstin's vision for St Bernard's is inspiring, and I have every confidence that under her leadership, this school will shine even brighter—becoming a true beacon of the Roman Catholic community in Ladybridge and Bolton.
"As I step back and reflect on my time as a governor, I do so with immense pride. St Bernard's is more than just a school—it is a family, a community, and a place where children grow, learn, and flourish. I have been incredibly fortunate to serve this school and its pupils, and I know that its future is in safe hands.
"To everyone who has served, attended, or contributed to this fantastic school and community asset—thank you. Your efforts, your dedication, and your belief in St Bernard's have made it what it is today. And as we all know… Bernie's got talent!"
