After chalking up more than 20 years at one of Bolton's 'fantastic school, governor Phil Ashcroft has stepped down as chairman at St Bernard's RC Primary.
Mr Ashcroft, a former councillor, said it was an honour to serve the school and paid tribute to fellow governors, staff and pupils.
Mr Ashcroft said: "When I was first elected to the Governing Board in 2003, I could never have imagined the transformation we would witness, the challenges we would overcome, and the successes we would celebrate together.
"First and foremost, I want to express my deepest gratitude to governors past and present, staff, parents, and, of course, the children—who are the heart of this school. It has been a privilege to serve a school that means so much to so many, and I am incredibly proud of everything we have achieved together.
"I would like to pay special tribute to Claire Doodson, an inspirational and truly dedicated head, Clare's leadership, passion, and unwavering commitment to the children and staff of St Bernard's have left an indelible mark on this school. Working alongside her was both an honour and a pleasure, and her vision has helped shape St Bernard's into the school it is today.

"When I think back to the school I first joined in 2003, it was a 'child of the 70s.' Over the years, we have seen massive changes that have transformed it into a modern, single year group school that can rival any around. These improvements didn't happen overnight—they were the result of dedication, hard work, and the shared commitment of governors, staff, and the wider school community."
He added: "Of course, our journey hasn't been without its challenges. The situation with RAAC concrete has brought uncertainty, but it has also presented us with a remarkable opportunity—the potential for a brand-new school building. While the road ahead may still hold obstacles, I have no doubt that with the strength and resilience of this community, St Bernard's will emerge even stronger, ready to provide the very best for future generations of pupils.
"Now, as we look to the future, we do so with excitement and optimism. We are delighted to welcome our new headteacher, Kirstin (Taylor), who brings fresh energy, passion, and fantastic ideas to continue building on our successes. Kirstin's vision for St Bernard's is inspiring, and I have every confidence that under her leadership, this school will shine even brighter—becoming a true beacon of the Roman Catholic community in Ladybridge and Bolton.
"As I step back and reflect on my time as a governor, I do so with immense pride. St Bernard's is more than just a school—it is a family, a community, and a place where children grow, learn, and flourish. I have been incredibly fortunate to serve this school and its pupils, and I know that its future is in safe hands.
"To everyone who has served, attended, or contributed to this fantastic school and community asset—thank you. Your efforts, your dedication, and your belief in St Bernard's have made it what it is today. And as we all know… Bernie's got talent!"

Woman Refuses to Look After Her Stepdaughter While Working From Home — Now the Child's Birth Mom Is Furious

A woman who works from her home is frustrated by her stepdaughter's mother making demands that she care for the child while working She shared her frustrations on Mumsnet, wondering if she was being unreasonable by saying no, as it's caused tension with her partner Many commenters sided with her, and one said it was "a relief to hear a woman say I said no to compromising my job"A woman who is refusing to look after her stepdaughter while working from home is now in an argument with her partner's ex. The frustrated 33-year-old woman explained in a post on the popular U.K.- based forum Mumsnet that her job managing a finance team for a local authority is highly demanding and stressful. She doesn't have any biological children, but her partner, 33, has a 9-year-old daughter from a previous relationship who often interrupts her work. 'Whenever my stepdaughter is poorly or it is the school holidays and her mother hasn't arranged suitable childcare, she always asks me to look after her because 'I work from home so I can look after her,' " the woman said. "Every time she has asked me, I have always said no." Her refusal is now causing tension between her stepdaughter's mother and her partner, as there is an argument that she should make herself available to look out for the girl. "However, I don't see why it is any different to someone who goes to a place of work who cannot look after a child, to someone who WFH (work from home)," the woman said. 'I am in meetings, training, phone calls and I sit in silence with no TV/music on when working. I need to concentrate. I cannot look after a poorly child whilst I am also working,' she continued. is now available in the Apple App Store! However, when she is remote, the expectation is that she "just be able to" look after her stepdaughter. "It also doesn't help that stepdaughter does not listen to me very much," she said. "When I ask her to do something, or not do something, she more often than not ignores me, and I have to repeat myself 10 times or ask her dad to sort her." The woman said she understands her role in her stepdaughter's life, but doesn't want to compromise her career. 'My career, it is important. I don't have children of my own and yes I respect and understanding being with my partner he has a daughter, so that comes with additional factors, but I do not see how that should affect my work,' she said. The majority of users attempted to reassure the woman that she was not in the wrong and questioned why the father wasn't being called upon to provide care. 'You are not even slightly in the wrong but I do wonder is her dad as well as her mom doing his share of the childcare when she is ill or in holidays?' one wrote. Another added it was 'a relief to hear a woman say I said no to compromising my job for someone else's demands! Absolutely not.' It was also brought up that working from home was still work and not free daycare service. 'WFH doesn't mean you can look after children while working. I don't with my own children,' a user said. In an update to her post, the woman said the child's birth mother "is asking me directly, she never goes to my partner to ask, always straight to me," and relayed to her partner that his daughter can't be with her if she doesn't listen after another mishap where she was ignored. Beloved tram cat returns home for the final time

The memorial of a cat at a tram stop where he frequently cuddled up to commuters has now been returned to his former owners in an apparent "stroke of luck". Benton, a black and white moggy, became well-known for visiting the Inham Road tram stop in Chilwell, Nottinghamshire, before he died in 2021. Nottingham Express Transit (NET) subsequently added a poster about him to the stop's information board at the time. However Ginny Hicks, the cat's owner, spotted an tram worker while travelling to work last month, who mentioned it would soon be taken down. "She struck up a conversation with him," her daughter, Steph Hicks said. "They offered really quickly to give [Benton's memorial] back to her and arranged it all... but if she hadn't been going to work at that time on that day, it might not of happened." The "sociable" feline was found as a stray by the Hicks' family when he was a four-month-old kitten, after almost being hit by a bus in 2015. He ingratiated himself with the local community thereafter by visiting the Inham Road tram stop "pretty much every day". Steph said: "He was a really big personality, even for a cat. He'd just go down there all the time, because he was smart enough to know that there's people that are going to be staying still there. "If there was somebody out on the street, he wanted to be their friend. "Since he's been gone, we end up speaking to people about him and his memory, complete strangers, bonding over the memories of Benton." The memorial of Benton was formally delivered back to the family on 3 June. "We're very touched by all of this, it just kind of feels like it's come full circle with him coming home," Steph said. As an alternative to the memorial, information about Benton and a collage of pictures has been added to the tram stop's web page. "So it's a bit bittersweet, because obviously we still miss Benton, but knowing that he was so loved, its a nice feeling." According to Steph, NET needed to change the information board because it was "outdated", and there was no room to keep the memorial poster on the new version. "[We're] completely fine with that. We feel really cared for by NET and the lovely gestures that they've done there," she said. Follow BBC Nottingham on Facebook, on X, or on Instagram.
