Plan to turn dance and squash club back into church

Plans have been submitted for a Grade II listed dance studio and squash court to be turned back into a church. The Redeemed Christian Church of God Our Saviour's Parish has asked for permission to change the use of the building on Newport Road, Middlesbrough, into a place of worship. The building was St Cuthbert's Church, but 20 years ago it was turned into a squash court and leisure centre, with its last use being as a dance studio. "Despite this change, the building has retained its historic features and ecclesiastical character," planning documents said. "It remains a valued local landmark and is listed for its architectural and historic significance." The application submitted to Middlesbrough Council said no internal or external alterations would be carried out. "The proposal will help secure the long-term, active use of a listed building in a manner sensitive to its heritage value," it added. The council is expected to make a decision after a consultation period ends on 7 August. Follow BBC Tees on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram. Dumfries and Galloway players enjoy national walking football success

Saints Walking Footballers Tony Muirhead and Andy Durham won the Over-50s Men's Regional Cup with Cindy Halliday enjoying success in the Over-50's women's competition Saints Walking Footballers helped South West Scotland secure victories in national championships. Players were chosen for the Over-50s Men's Regional Cup and the Over-50s Women's Regional Cup in Glasgow – and it proved to be a successful day. ‌ Senior players Tony Muirhead and Andy Durham played in the men's event held at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, and Iain Wilson would have been playing alongside them had he not been injured. ‌ South West Scotland men emerged as unbeaten champions, drawing 1-1 against South East, winning 2-0 against North East and beating Central comfortably 3-1. Tony said: 'It was very competitive, and the highest standard of walking football I've played so far. I felt proud to be selected as part of a trio of players from Saints and the fact we got such a strong representation in the regional squad shows the progress St Cuthberts has made since starting walking football three years ago'. Saints Women's captain and player/manager, Cindy Halliday took part in the women's event in the same arena. In a closely contested tournament, South West region came out top, drawing with North West in the final game to win on goal difference, by a single goal – making it an over 50s regional double. Cindy, who scored a goal and made two assists said: 'It was a fantastic day for me, for our men playing alongside us in the same arena, and for the Club. St Cuthberts have worked so hard to build our walking football group and it's so satisfying to see results like this come through, both for the men and the women'.'
