Cross-border handshake tradition between N.B. and Maine returns Wednesday night

(Nick Moore/CTV Atlantic) A longstanding cross-border tradition between St. Stephen, N.B., and Calais, Maine returns on Wednesday amid strained relations between Canada and the U.S. A procession of people from the two countries will meet on the Ferry Point Bridge to sing both national anthems, exchange flags, and hug. The event, titled 'Hands Across the Border,' serves as the official opening for the 2025 International Homecoming Festival and begins at 7 p.m. AST. The opening event, which includes a traditional handshake between the mayors of St. Stephen and Calais, has kicked off the festival since 1974. It wasn't held in 2020 or 2021 due to pandemic restrictions. The International Homecoming Festival continues until Sunday under the theme 'We Hug It Out.' The unique relationship between St. Stephen and Calais is renowned amongst border communities, from family connections to mutual emergency responses. However, there's been a noted drop in border traffic as the trade war continues. For more New Brunswick news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
