Stephen Curry returns to American Century Championship after walk-off eagle victory in 2023
Stephen Curry and his viral-producing talents are returning to this year's American Century Championship. Curry won the celebrity golf event in 2023 with a walk-off eagle. He did not compete last year as he was preparing to help lead Team USA to gold in basketball at the Paris Olympics. The NBA icon authored the most dramatic conclusion in ACC history two years ago when he rolled in an 18-foot eagle on the par-5 finisher to defeat tennis' Mardy Fish (video above). Because of how the modified Stableford scoring system works, had Curry missed the putt and made birdie, he would have lost by 1 point. It was one of multiple exhilarating moments at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course for one of sports' all-time dynamic performers. He made four eagles that week, including a hole-in-one at the 165-yard, par-3 seventh in Round 2. Curry will be joined in the field by Fish, who won last year's tournament, as well as Curry's father, Dell, and brother, Seth. Players among the field of 90 sports and entertainment stars range from Travis and Jason Kelce, to Josh Allen and Aaron Rodgers, to Colin Jost and Nate Bargatze, to Charles Barkley and Alex Rodriguez. The event will take place July 11-13 in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada. NBC and Peacock will have live coverage of all three rounds. Steph Curry may have been out of breath celebrating his hole-in-one on No. 7 at the American Century Championship, but the occasion was certainly well worth it.

Golf club opens new holes after years of development
An Isle of Wight golf club has opened new holes after years of development. Westridge Golf Centre and Club, in Ryde, has opened nine new holes on its course, which were first planned in the late 2000s. The new holes were opened by Lord Brabazon, who also opened the original course in 1993. The club said the development of the new holes was delayed by planning, environmental surveys, changes in contractors, and the Covid-19 pandemic. Celebratory competition follows unveiling of Westridge's long-awaited new holes (Image: Westridge Golf Club) The club said the pandemic worked to the course's advantage and work started in haste. The fairways were topsoiled in mid-2022, but the weather intervened. Initially too dry to seed, heavy rain in early autumn 2022 caused a lot of damage, washing away some topsoil and basic structure. Repairs continued and seeding took place in 2023, but the weather continued to cause issues with sub-ideal growing conditions for the new grass. Late 2024 was pencilled in for opening the new holes, but the grass was still struggling. So finally, Lord Brabazon, who also opened the slightly more famous course at the Belfry, stood again to hit an opening shot at Westridge and recognise all the hard work by the Westridge Golf Centre team to achieve this milestone. A 12-hole competition followed, playing all the holes available before three old holes are closed as part of the continuing redevelopment. Members and guests, totalling 87, took part in a shotgun start, with the best two Stableford scores from each team counting towards the final result. Winning on 62 points were Jill Prouten, Malcolm Prouten, Roger Merrifield, and Shelagh Merrifield. The Sunday saw a charity competition, the Susan Mew Trophy, take place. Sponsored by Cherry Godfrey with Leslies Motors, there was a hole-in-one contest, with a car as the prize. Unfortunately, no one achieved one. With another strong field, 88 members and guests, playing the course, the competition was won by Louise Webb, Shelagh Merrifield, Jacky Cook, and Claire Matejowsky with 96 points. Just over £1,300 was raised for the Mountbatten Hospice.

Warriors' Steph Curry commits to play in Lake Tahoe golf tournament
Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry will return to the shores of Lake Tahoe in July, potentially trying to make another closing 3. That's what Curry memorably did two years ago in the American Century Championship. His eagle on the 54th and final hole, a par-5, vaulted him to a dramatic victory in the marquee celebrity golf tournament. And now he's back. Curry has officially committed to play in this year's event (July 11-13) at Edgewood Tahoe in Stateline, Nev., the Chronicle has learned. Tournament officials will make the announcement Tuesday. This will be Curry's first appearance in the event since he earned his inaugural victory in July 2023. He didn't return to 'defend' his title because he was busy with the U.S. men's national basketball team last summer, preparing for the Paris Olympics. That worked out fairly well for Curry, whose torrid shooting in the semifinals and finals helped his team secure the gold medal. Curry and former pro tennis player Mardy Fish both return to Edgewood as reigning champs, in a sense. Curry's final-hole eagle in '23 (on an 18-foot putt) pushed him past Fish, and then last year Fish won the tournament for the second time. Two years ago, Curry built his wire-to-wire win on four eagles. That included a second-round hole-in-one on No. 7, punctuated by his impromptu, exuberant, 152-yard sprint from the tee to the hole. Curry finished with 75 points in the modified Stableford scoring system, to beat Fish (73) and former San Jose Sharks standout Joe Pavelski (66). Curry's passion for golf has prompted him to play on what is now known as the Korn Ferry Tour; fund the men's and women's programs at Howard University; and establish the Underrated Tour, a junior golf circuit seeking to create a pathway to the pros for underrepresented players. But his crowning achievement in his second sport came two years ago at Edgewood. 'I've always dreamt of this: 18th green, before a crowd like this,' Curry said after rolling home his triumphant putt. 'I still can't believe I made it. That was the most fun I've ever had on a golf course.' Curry contended in previous years of the celebrity tournament, finishing as high as fourth. This year's field of 90 golfers features a strong San Francisco 49ers flavor. Tight end George Kittle will make his first appearance in the event, along with teammate Kyle Juszczyk. Hall of Famers Steve Young and Jerry Rice, both regular participants, also will compete. Top golfers who figure to challenge Curry and Fish include Pavelski, former LPGA star Annika Sorenstam, former Cowboys quarterback (and three-time winner) Tony Romo and baseball Hall of Famer John Smoltz. Curry's dad, Dell, and brother, Seth, also are in the field.

Hymas, Stanford turn it on to win Jumeirah Pairs by The Brain and Performance Centre
Under the relentless Dubai sun, 80 determined golfers teed it up for the Jumeirah Pairs by The Brain and Performance Centre, a DP World Company, in a spirited showcase of camaraderie at the Jumeirah Golf Estates. The format for the day was a Pairs Combined Stableford, where each golfer played their own ball, and scores were tallied by combining each pair's stableford points per hole. With this format encouraging both consistency and occasional bold shot-making, it made for compelling golf from start to finish. Players were also reminded to pick up if they could no longer score on a hole — a small but strategic twist that kept the pace brisk and competitive. Men played from the specially marked composite tees, while women took on the course from forward tees, setting the stage for a fair and balanced contest. Beyond the main competition, players vied for glory in several on-course challenges, including the ever-popular "Beat the Pro" against Brandon Moodley on Hole 4, as well as Nearest the Pin contests on Holes 6 and 17, and Nearest the Pin in Two on Hole 10. Rising to the occasion in the Beat the Pro challenge was Nick Hymas, who not only bested the pro but would go on to leave his mark on the overall tournament as well. Precision play was on full display throughout the course. Carl Downham took Nearest the Pin honors on Hole 6, while Mitsuko Emmerson showcased her accuracy on Hole 17. On the longer test at Hole 10, Abdulla Darwish earned bragging rights for Nearest the Pin in Two. In the main competition, there was no shortage of drama as scores climbed and leaders jostled for the top spot. In third place were Moustafa Shahin and Eric Shehadeh, finishing strong with a combined 74 points. Just ahead of them, Edward McCullagh and Montek Mayal clinched the runner-up position with a solid 76 points. But it was Nick Hymas and Richard Stanford who truly stole the show. Their outstanding round, marked by sharp iron play, steady putting, and that winning mentality, earned them a superb 80 Stableford points, securing their place as the champions of the May Jumeirah Pairs. Meanwhile, in the Gross Division — judged purely on raw scoring — the team of Ed East and Thomas Kennedy impressed with an excellent total of 60 points, proving that power and precision can go hand in hand. The tournament was proudly sponsored by The Brain and Performance Centre, whose continued support brings an added dimension of excellence and prestige to the event. With another successful day in the books, players and spectators alike are already looking forward to the next edition of this standout fixture on the golfing calendar.
